While direct load control of end-use loads has existed for decades, price driven response programs are only beginning to be explored at the distribution level. These programs utilize a price signal as a means to control demand. Active markets allow customers to respond to fluctuations in wholesale electrical costs, but may not allow the utility to control demand. Transactive markets, utilizing distributed controllers and a centralized auction, can be used to create an interactive system which can limit demand at key times on a distribution system, decreasing congestion. With the current proliferation of computing and communication resources, the ability now exists to create transactive demand response programs at the residential level. With the combination of automated bidding and response strategies, coupled with education programs and customer response, emerging demand response programs have the ability to reduce utility demand and congestion in a more controlled manner. This paper will explore the effects of a residential double-auction market, utilizing transactive controllers, on the operation of an electric power distribution system.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116778271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A PHEV can be recharged through a plug connected to the electric power grid. Therefore, PHEVs increase the load of the electric power grid. Consequently, there are concerns about their negative impact on power generation, transmission, and distribution installations. PHEV charging load profile (PCLP) is an approach to examine the aggregated impact of PHEVs on the power grid; however developing a PCLP requires some basic data which is not easily available. This paper focuses on the information required for generating a PCLP and proposes answers to three key questions i) when does each vehicle begin to be charged, ii) how much energy is required to charge it, and iii) what level of charge is available. The data obtained from transportation surveys, as sources for the information on vehicles and trips characteristics, are used in this work to extract applicable information which leads to the development of a PCLP.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117273511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Stage 1 the branches suspected of having parameter errors are identified through an Identification Index (II). The II of a branch is the ratio between the number of measurements adjacent to that branch, whose normalized residuals are higher than a specified threshold value, and the total number of measurements adjacent to that branch. Using several measurement snapshots, in Stage 2 the suspicious parameters are estimated, in a simultaneous multiple-state-and-parameter estimation, via an augmented state and parameter estimator which increases the V- state vector for the inclusion of suspicious parameters. Stage 3 enables the validation of the estimation obtained in Stage 2, and is performed via a conventional Weighted Least Squares Estimator. Several simulation results (with IEEE bus systems) have demonstrated the reliability of the proposed approach to deal with single and multiple parameter errors in adjacent and non-adjacent branches, as well as in parallel transmission lines with series compensation. Finally the proposed approach is confirmed on tests performed on the Hydro-Québec Trans-Énergie network.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121077063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In ADDRESS, “Active Demand” (AD) means the active participation of domestic and small commercial consumers in the electricity markets and in the provision of services to the other electricity system participants. This paper gives an overview of the results obtained so far in the project and more specifically the services that AD can provide to the different regulated and deregulated electricity system participants, the aggregation of demand flexibility, the technical validation performed by distribution and transmission system operators, the overall technical and commercial architecture. The paper also describes how Active Demand can be used to support the integration of Renewables and more generally Distributed Generation.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121256209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Regarding switched CBs, a Tabu Search metaheuristic algorithm is developed to determine their optimal operation with the objective of reducing the power losses in the lines on the system, while meeting network constraints. On the other hand, the optimal operation of DGs is analyzed through an evolutionary Multi-Objective (MO) programming approach. The objectives of such approach are the minimization of power losses and operation cost of the DGs. The comparison of the reactive power support provided by switched CBs and DGs is carried out using a modified IEEE 34 bus distribution test system.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127380435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The real-time simulation is performed by using an original platform called “Distributed Energy”. It combines two tools: The first one is a real-time digital simulator for electric power simulation. The second one is a java agent development framework used to program distributed systems and peer-to-peer applications. A decentralized secondary voltage control method is presented. The Multi-agent approach is used to share the voltage regulation effort and perform the coordination of distributed generators with flexibility and reliability in distribution network. This is the situation in the New Zealand power system where an increasing number of wind turbines could be combined with existing small storage hydro power stations on New Zealand rivers. This paper supposes that wind and small hydro are offered as a firm capacity product into the wholesale electricity market. An algorithm is presented to determine the hydro-wind generator operating strategy for 24 hours ahead of real-time operations in order to minimize cost or maximize the generator's profit. The algorithm uses i) hydro generation from the small storages in a river chain to mitigate the wind generation variability, ii) variable penalty prices in the objective function to incentivise combined hydro and wind generation to minimize the deviation from a committed schedule and iii) environment constraints on hydrology to examine the effects on cost and profitability with and without a small regulating storage at the end of the river chain. A number of scenarios are studied and their results are presented.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125526920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
