Different energy savings methods can be used if data needed to measure the energy saving in an accurate manner are available (econometric models, bottom up, top down based on indicators, etc.). As an alternative to measuring energy consumption, efficiency progress in the different sectors can be monitored by using energy efficiency indicators (e.g. Odyssee [2]). In Lebanon Odysee's indicators are available since year 2000 [3] (developed by the Lebanese Association for Energy Saving and for Environment, ALMEE, in the frame of the Energy Efficiency indicators database initiated by the Mediterranean Association of the National Agencies for Energy Conservation, MEDENER). The National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2011-2015 (NEEAP) for Lebanon was approved by the Council of Ministers on 10 November 2010 [4]. This paper presents an evaluation of the Lebanese NEEAP. It concludes that its targets were not satisfactory achieved (18.6 GWh/year of energy saving achieved from 2087.6 GWh/year targeted). The first Lebanese NEEAP was not designed as a strategic document according to the requirement of the Energy Saving Directive [5]. This paper presents in concise manner what should be included in a “good” NEEAP to help in the preparation of the second NEEAP (2016-2020). The paper argues that new NEEAP (2016-2020) should define energy saving target as maximum primary energy consumption (Mtoe) able to detailed assessment (by independent evaluator) of the energy savings through top down or bottom up calculation methods and ALMEE/MEDENER Odyssee's indicators.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"605 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125384812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four different scenarios were examined in accordance with the contextual boundary conditions. For each case, the algorithm yielded the optimum number of floors as an output so that the building maintains its net-zero energy rating. The preliminary results indicated that utilizing a PV system with premium 19% efficiency yielded the maximum building height as compared to a system with 15% and 10% efficiency by a factor of 2.3 and 5.7 respectively, especially for low energy consumption levels. The performance with a vertical inclination angle of 70° tilt was consistently superior to that from an angle of 90° (a 43% improvement with 15% efficiency). For an aspect ratio of 2.0, the South facades contribution is 2 to 2.8 times more than that from the East/West facades. Overall, the site shading factor induces a performance degradation in the range of 11.1% to 18.7%.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"185 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124705255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, the main objective is to find the optimal hourly water discharge rate of each hydro station in a multi-reservoir system to minimize the power deficit. The demanded load is then distributed among the working units of three cascade hydropower stations constructed on Litaini River - Lebanon: Markaba, Awali and Charles Helou. To achieve our goal, methods involving and joining data mining and mathematical programming will serve as a base for a Decision Support Tool (DST). Based on the DST features, a distributed control structure is implemented using a multiple software framework. MATLAB is used for mathematical optimization while LabVIEW is employed to develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) for sequential control.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116768237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today, energy storage enjoys a growing sense of promise, as many expect it will become a viable part of the electric system over the next decade. However, there are still very real challenges to the cost-effective deployment of storage solutions. The work described in this paper highlights the advantages of techno-economical & operational of energy storage in wind-diesel hybrid system in order to strengthen power networks and maintain load levels. There are various types of storage methods, some of which are already in use, while others are still in development. We have taken a look at the main characteristics of the different electricity storage techniques and their field of application (permanent or portable, long- or short-term storage, maximum power required, etc.).","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116145981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The catalytic performance of these oxides was investigated with the dry reforming of methane in order to produce energy vector from renewable energy. The samples were characterized, before and after calcination, by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (IR), and determination of the specific surfaces by the BET method. After calcination at 800 °C under an air flow, the hydrotalcite structure was completely decomposed. The dry reforming of methane was carried out using a mixture of CH4:CO2 (1:1) after 2 hours of reduction under an H2 flow at 800 °C. Ni-Co based catalysts revealed better catalytic activity than the Co based one.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"2009 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129047789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The estimation of solar data is the most important parameter for designing and developing various solar energy systems such as photovoltaic, solar water heater and concentrated solar power. The main objective of this paper is to present a comparison between different estimation models for global solar radiation based on sunshine duration applicable in Lebanon. Subsequently a new correlation is proposed to estimate the monthly average daily global solar radiation in Lebanon. Measured data were obtained from photovoltaic system installed on the roof of the Industrial Research Institute during 2013-2015. Estimated data of seven previous models and a proposed coefficients model, are compared to measured data based on the root mean error, the main bias error and the maximum permissible error. The results of using the new coefficients revealed that the error is minimized, and this new correlation can be used to predict the monthly mean average daily global solar radiations.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128313007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The state of art on wind turbine technology is established by comparison of each type. Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIG), Squirrel Cage Induction generators (SCIG) are the two types of induction generators commonly used for geared operation in WECS in variable speeds and fixed speeds, while the Permanent Magnet Synchronous generators (PMSG) can operate gearless. Due to higher demand of power from wind energy, off shore installations are becoming more popular and new wind turbine designs are being expected in the near future, with the development of the improved generators and converter designs.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131012037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
