The study analyzed data from 308 Korean adolescents aged 18 or younger who reported current use of tobacco products. Participants were divided into three groups: all smokers, conventional cigarette users, and e-cigarette users. Multiple regression and logistic regression analysis were used to examine associations between believability and smoking initiation and cessation. Among all adolescents, higher levels of believability were significantly associated with a later age of smoking initiation and greater likelihood of smoking cessation. For conventional cigarette users, believability significantly predicted smoking cessation, but not initiation age. Believability of pictorial warning labels plays a meaningful role in promoting smoking cessation among adolescents, particularly those using conventional cigarettes. However, its effect on preventing smoking initiation appears limited. These findings support the need for differentiated tobacco control strategies based on product type and user characteristics. These findings underscore the importance of product-specific and psychologically informed interventions for preventing and reducing adolescent smoking.</p>","PeriodicalId":15812,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse","volume":" ","pages":"1-16"},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2026-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147633597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explored the conceptualization of SSA cultural values in Australia, and to establish how they relate to AOD use among SSA Australian youth. Utilizing convenience sampling, one-on-one interviews were conducted with a total of 18 SSA Australians. The participants comprised 9 youth (aged 18-30; 4 females, 5 males), and 9 community leaders (aged 35-74; 4 females, 5 males). Based on a reflexive thematic analysis of the data, three main overarching themes of family, communality, and religiosity were identified as fundamental SSA Australian cultural values, and they are related to predisposing risk and/or protective factors in terms of youth AOD use. While the predisposing risk factors for SSA Australian youth AOD use are related to the thematic values of communality and family, the protective factors for SSA Australian youth AOD use are related to the thematic values of family, communality, and religiosity. The results highlight how SSA immigrants in Australia perceive important aspects of their cultural values in relation to youth AOD use. However, further research into how the endorsement of cultural values by SSA Australian youth contributes to their acculturation and AOD use outcomes is needed to inform tailor-made AOD use interventions.</p>","PeriodicalId":15812,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse","volume":" ","pages":"1-24"},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2026-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147627969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, the current study sought to compare levels of mental health symptoms among combustible users compared to dual combustible and electronic users among Latinx persons who smoke. The current sample consisted of 297 adult Latinx daily cigarette smokers (<i>M<sub>age</sub></i> = 35.90 years; <i>SD</i> = 8.87; age range 18-61; 36.4% female), of which 92 reported current dual use of an e-cigarette (<i>M<sub>age</sub></i> = 33.34 years; <i>SD</i> = 7.75; age range 19-60; 28.3% female). Differences in anxiety, depression, anxiety sensitivity, emotion dysregulation, and distress tolerance were examined, and we hypothesized that dual users would showcase higher mental health problems. Globally, around three million individuals are affected by MS, with up to 97,000 cases in Iran attributed to genetic predispositions along with various environmental factors like smoking. Cognitive impairment affects a significant portion of patients, ranging from 45% to 70%. This study investigates the impact of regular aerobic swimming exercise for four weeks, mild cognitive impairment induced by encephalomyelitis, and their combination on the expression of microRNA-142-3p and its correlation with the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in relation to spatial memory. Twenty-one C57BL/6 mice were divided into three groups. RT-PCR was used for microRNA expression analysis, and BDNF levels were assessed <i>via</i> western blotting. Clinical scores and animal weights were monitored daily. EAE induction led to an increase in microRNA-142-3p expression and a decrease in BDNF levels compared to the control group. Exercise inversed them significantly, and improved spatial memory. Our findings indicate that engaging in regular swimming exercise can counteract the up-regulation of miR-142-3p in brain tissue, which likely contributes to mild cognitive impairment induced by MS. Additionally, the increase in BDNF following exercise appears to be associated with miR-142-3p and the enhancement of cognitive function. Thus, the therapeutic benefits of exercise, particularly in releasing BDNF to improve cognitive function in MS patients, warrant consideration. Lifestyle modifications have the potential to effectively modulate environmental influences and ethnicity, underscoring their significance in MS management.</p>","PeriodicalId":15812,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse","volume":" ","pages":"439-455"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141432078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Being older, Hispanic, and receiving SBIRT by health-teams designed to reduce health disparities was related to increased odds of being mismatched. Exploratory results suggested that across predictors, individuals were more likely to receive a lesser intervention than their screening score indicated. Most clients were matched well to intervention as based on screening score. When mismatch occurred, a lower level of care was given. Staff may benefit from attending to more client engagement so that clients return for more intensive interventions; and agencies may need more resources to facilitate client access to services.</p>","PeriodicalId":15812,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse","volume":" ","pages":"505-525"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141534546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
