Cyclocarya paliurus, a medical and ornamental species with low-quality seedlings, was investigated using three shading levels (treatment with no shade net (SH0), treatment with one layer of shade net (SH1), and treatment with two layers of shade net (SH2)). The growth and physiological responses of seedlings under plastic greenhouse cultivation were investigated from June to September. The results showed that the survival rate of seedlings reached 100%, and seedling growth and biomass were the best under SH2, with higher plant height and leaf area than that under other treatments. Water content of seedlings exhibit not difference between three shading levels, and leaves had the highest water content and total soluble sugar content. The chlorophyll content in the leaf increased, but malondialdehyde content decreased with increasing shading layers. Mineral content were in the following order: calcium > potassium > magnesium > sodium, and the translocation factor decreased with increasing shading layers. Antioxidant enzyme activities were in the following order: SOD > PPO > POD > CAT; their activities decreased with increasing shading layers, except for that of PPO. Various correlation existed between physiological response and seedling growth. Shade improved seedling quality through a series of physiological responses under plastic greenhouse conditions. This study provides a solid foundation for greenhouse cultivation of Cyclocarya species.","PeriodicalId":15757,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fruit and Ornamental Plant Research","volume":"65 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76525616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Variations in the flower color of chrysanthemum are abundant, which is an important feature related to its ornamental and commercial value. However, few reports have elucidated the inheritance of the flower color and pigmentation of chrysanthemum. In this study, an F1 hybrid population, including 319 hybrids of small-flowered chrysanthemum cultivars with different flower color, was constructed. The genetic variation rules for some color and pigment-related traits were discussed based on major gene and polygene mixed inheritance analyses. Both the total anthocyanin and carotenoid contents were controlled by 2 pairs of additive dominant major genes and the heritability of the major genes was 70.44% and 86.03%, respectively. Based on the high-density genetic map constructed for the hybrid population, QTL analysis for the above traits was carried out by using the interval mapping method. A total of 25 related QTLs and 517 closely linked markers were detected, including 3 QTLs controlling the total anthocyanin content and 2 QTLs controlling the total carotenoid content, all of which were major QTLs. Furthermore, 17 unigenes related to pigments were identified via BLAST searches with <italic>Chrysanthemum nankingense</italic> genome. For such genes, the collinearity was observed in four chromosome level genomes, including three genomes of the genus <italic>Chrysanthemum</italic> and the first genome of cultivated chrysanthemum. The results lay a foundation for in-depth exploration of flower color and pigmentation in chrysanthemum and provide a reference for future research in other ornamental plants.","PeriodicalId":15757,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fruit and Ornamental Plant Research","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136210014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chrysanthemum black spot is caused by <italic>Alternaria</italic> fungi. Members of the NAC family regulate plant biological and abiotic stress responses. We screened and confirmed the target gene, <italic>CmNAC083,</italic> by transcriptome sequencing after inoculation with <italic>Alternaria</italic> fungi. The CmNAC083 gene was cloned from the chrysanthemum 'Jinba' leaves, and its protein structure was analyzed in the present study. CmNAC083 exhibits transcriptional inhibitory activity, and a tobacco subcellular localization experiment revealed that CmNAC083 is found in the nucleus. Compared with other tissues, <italic>CmNAC083</italic> was highly expressed in the stem and bud during the vegetative growth period and in the stems and roots during flowering. Inoculation with <italic>Alternaria alternata</italic> induced sustained high expression of <italic>CmNAC083</italic>, reaching its peak at 48 h after infection with the black spot pathogen. Overexpression of <italic>CmNAC083</italic> can enhance the resistance of chrysanthemums to black spot disease, and its transient silencing presents a susceptible phenotype. The results of RNA sequencing results revealed that the transcription levels of jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis, response signal pathway, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) pathway genes in the <italic>CmNAC083</italic> overexpression lines were upregulated compared with those in the wild-type (WT) plants. Furthermore, the overexpressing strains exhibited a higher endogenous JA content than WT after treatment with <italic>A. alternata</italic>. Overall, <italic>CmNAC083</italic> overexpression positively enhances chrysanthemum resistance to black spot disease by regulating <italic>A. alternata</italic> infection by upregulating the transcription levels of the JA synthesis and ROS pathways.","PeriodicalId":15757,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fruit and Ornamental Plant Research","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135600388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to its distinctive fragrance, there has been a growing interest in the variation of O. fragrans leaf shapes. However, there are limited reports regarding the role of TCP genes regulating leaf morphology in O. fragrans . In this study, a total of 39 TCP members were identified at the genome level, and the sequence characteristics and tissue expression of class I TCP genes were analyzed. The highest expression gene OfTCP13 cloned from O. fragrans cultivar 'Yanhonggui' and transferred into tobacco plants. Moreover, the OfTCP13 protein was found to be localized in the nucleus and lacked transcriptional activation activity. Compared with wild-type (WT) plants, overexpression of OfTCP13 significantly influenced the leaf morphology of tobacco plants, resulting in significantly greater leaf thickness and blade length-to-width ratio than WT plants. Furthermore, the cross-section of the transgenic tobacco plants exhibited mesophyll cell number increased relative to WT plants, suggesting that OfTCP13 may regulate leaf morphology through promoting mesophyll cell number. Together, our results can provide a valuable insight into the improvement of diversity of leaf morphology in O. fragrans . Citation: Zheng Z, Xu Q, Tang J, Chen P, Hu Z, et al. 2023. Fragrance is an important ornamental character of chrysanthemum flowers, especially those consumed as tea and other foods, and the flower fragrance is the major determinant of the commercial value of chrysanthemum cultivars. Currently, however, the research on chrysanthemum flower fragrance is mainly focused on the composition and content of fragrant compounds, and a clear classification of fragrance types is lacking. Here, we divided chrysanthemum fragrance into six categories based on sensory evaluation and determined the identity and content of fragrant compounds of chrysanthemum accessions representative of each fragrance type by GC-MS. In addition, we analyzed the conserved aromatic substances responsible for the fruity fragrance type chrysanthemum with multi-functional development potential, providing a theoretical basis for creating new chrysanthemum germplasm with specific fragrance types. The results of this study can accelerate the breeding process of chrysanthemum accessions with new fragrance types.","PeriodicalId":15757,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fruit and Ornamental Plant Research","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74487216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
