All subjects showed reductions in the severity of symptoms of both TPI (53.7% reduction) and heel cracks, calluses and/or dry feet (51.6% reduction), beginning already after 2 weeks of treatment, with reduction continuation and improvement after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment. Negative mycological cultures were obtained post-treatment in 85.7% of subjects, while 35.7% of subjects also obtained mycological cure (negative mycological culture + negative KOH test). Post-treatment questionnaires showed improved quality of life, good treatment tolerability, easy use, and that 69% of subjects would recommend the product. The results reveal that the foot cream is safe and effective in the combined treatment of TPI and heel cracks, calluses and/or dry feet.","PeriodicalId":15654,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications","volume":"67 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86795117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To clarify the effects of 2% isostearyl-L-ascorbic acid (ISAA) against PIH and PIE in acne vulgaris, a clinical pilot study with topical 2% ISAA gel was performed in 25 acne patients with PIH and PIE. Topical ISAA gel was applied on the whole face with PIH and PIE in acne vulgaris twice a day for 3 months. Regarding PIH and PIE, investigator’s global improvement rating (IGIR) was evaluated in 7-point scales according to the reduced area of PIH and PIE before and after the study. Remarkable improvement in PIH was observed in 7 patients (28.0%) and in PIE in 12 (48%) of the 25 patients. No adverse reactions were observed during the treatment. Topical ISAA application can be an alternative, non-invasive available treatment for PIH and PIE in acne vulgaris.","PeriodicalId":15654,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83871996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the experiment of xylene-induced ear swelling in mice, it was found that the inhibition rates of ear swelling in mice induced by xylene in three groups of cosmetics containing Artemisia annua extract reached 60.40%, 73.36% and 74.01%, respectively, close to the positive drug group. Twenty-five sensitive skin volunteers were selected for human clinical trial, and the skin TEWL value, cuticle hydration degree and skin heme (ultra-high concentration) were tested. The results showed that using cosmetics containing Artemisia annua extract for four weeks could effectively increase the hydration degree of cheek cuticle by 63.90% and reduce transepidermal waterloss (TEWL) by 21.51%. The skin heme (ultra-high concentration) decreased by 69.14% and the affected area decreased by 77.47%. The results show that the cosmetics containing Artemisia annua extract can inhibit inflammation, repair skin barrier, improve damaged skin, and reduce redness and other sensitive skin symptoms.","PeriodicalId":15654,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications","volume":"50 1","pages":"8-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87017552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We applied TXRF as a screening method for determining the composition in 3 sets of tattoo inks, in order to establish, from an inorganic point of view, the composition and purity of the samples, evaluating their elemental innocuousness. The analyzed 48 products were freely acquired from on line suppliers. All of them were analyzed by external standard quantification, but in order to inter-compare the results, a 15% of the samples were acidly digested and then quantified by the internal standard method. In the samples we determined: 1) their inorganic quantitative composition and, 2) the possible presence of elements which are potential health hazards. In this study few anomalies were found: 1) The high presence Ti of and W in few samples, 2) Arsenic was found in four of them, and 3) A trace detection of a rare earth element in a particular product. The products studied are almost freely imported from a world open marked, so the questions about their innocuousness could affect not only to the Chilean society.","PeriodicalId":15654,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77261115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dexpanthenol is a well-known moisturizer with barrier-improving properties and the oily phase of the water in oil preparation forms a lipophilic film on the skin surface that isolates the skin from irritants (feces and urine). Prolonged contact with irritants triggers a local inflammation cascade responsible for the cutaneous erythema. To further investigate the protective properties of skin barrier preparations, we took advantage of an ex vivo model of healthy human skin discs especially designed to evaluate protective and/or repairing effects of topical preparations recommended for baby’s buttocks through the measurement of interleukin-1 alpha release (a cytokine considered as the Primum movens of the skin inflammatory reaction), following the application of different irritants. Methods: Healthy human skin discs have been incubated in the absence (control) or in the presence of two irritants, i.e. a “urine like + urease” preparation and sodium dodecyl sulfate, and in the presence of three ointments, one containing dexpanthenol, but not the other two. At the end of the incubation period, interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1α) was quantified in the explants culture media. Results: “Urine like + urease” preparation (ULU) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) both increased IL-1α production of skin explants by 181.1% (p α release by 67.42% (p α release by 45.94% (p α production regardless of the irritant applied. Moreover, the effect of the dexpanthenol containing formula on the ULU-induced IL-1α release was significantly higher than the effect of the other formula; a difference of 19.6 % (p ®) provides good protection of baby’s buttocks against irritants. Its protective effect seems to be superior compared with other products, which did not contain this ingredient. Moreover, the results obtained in the present study suggest that dexpanthenol displays per se a real IL-1α production inhibitory effect. This work, however, consists of preliminary studies and additional investigations involving more formulas and end-points such as the quantification of other pro- or anti-inflammatory cytokines and/or resolvins for example, are needed to better understand the cutaneous protective effect of dexpanthenol.","PeriodicalId":15654,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications","volume":"26 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84857469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Purpose: We aimed to investigate the differences and similarities between vitiligo and nevus depigmentosus in children based on the clinical course and characteristics. Materials and Methods: We conducted an examination of the disease type, treatment, progress, and differentiation of 85 cases of vitiligo and nevus depigmentosus that developed before 15 years of age among patients who visited the Osaka University Department of Dermatology with a chief complaint of white patches from January 2010 to March 2017. Results: The median age at the onset of symptoms of 79 patients with vitiligo was 4.5 years and while that of 6 patients with nevus depigmentosus was 0.8 years, indicating that the onset of nevus depigmentosus occurred earlier. While vitiligo often developed in the head and neck regions, with a tendency for depigmented spots in multiple regions, nevus depigmentosus did not show this tendency in these regions. Upon performing Wood’s lamp observation in 38 cases of vitiligo, 35 cases were found to be fluorescent chalky white and in 3 cases histologically diagnosed as vitiligo, no clear fluorescent color was observed. All 6 patients diagnosed with nevus depigmentosus exhibited a non-fluorescent off-white color under a Wood’s lamp. Conclusions: This study indicates that non-invasive observation using a Wood’s lamp is useful in the differential diagnosis of pediatric leukoderma, in addition to the subsequent clinical course, such as the presence or absence of lesional repigmentation and/or enlargement.","PeriodicalId":15654,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications","volume":"105 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77406609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

About 70% - 80% of them suffer from these infections during their lifetime. These infections occur in two forms, gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a reversible inflammation of the gingiva which can be cured. As with humans, the harmful bacteria can cause infections also in organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys. Besides veterinary treatment, also the owner’s everyday care is essential. Objective: The aim of the study was to develop and clinically test easy home care probiotic product for cats’ and dogs’ oral health. Methods: Nine cats and thirteen dogs were given a combination of selected bacteria Streptococcus thermophilus SP4, Lactobacillus plantarum 14D and Lactobacillus rhamnosus SP1 (Petguide powder) in powder form daily for four weeks on top of the dry feed. Microbiological samples were taken before and after the intervention from each dog and cat. The samples were analyzed with flow cytometric analysis using Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium sp. as indicators for oral health. Results: The home care treatment with these specific, live probiotic bacteria was shown to prevent the growth of infectious bacteria within four weeks. Petguide probiotic powder reduced the relative abundance of infectious microbes significantly (p = 0.005) in cats and dogs. Conclusion: The results suggest that the probiotic product with three live strains of probiotic bacteria prevents the growth of infectious bacterial species that are known to cause infections in pets’ mouths. Therefore, this probiotic combination could be used to improve the oral health of pets and increase their quality of life.","PeriodicalId":15654,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88092442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In human cells submitted to oxidative stress the telomeres length decrease, the expression of progerin and the activity of mTOR are increased. At our knowledge, there is no published data on Cps correlated with ultraviolet radiation (UV) and blue light effects in human cells regarding telomeres’ length, progerin expression or mTOR1 complex activity. Objectives: In this study, we sought to assess 1) telomeres’ length in newborn human fibroblasts exposed to UV and blue light; 2) progerin production in mature human normal fibroblasts exposed to UV; 3) mTOR1 activation in adult human normal keratinocytes exposed to UV, analyzing the activity of a Cyanobacteria phycocyanin (Cp) in these in vitro models. Materials and Methods: Human skin fibroblasts or human normal keratinocytes were cultured—in the absence or in the presence of Cp and submitted to UVB + UVA and blue light irradiations. Telomeres’ length, progerin expression and mTOR1 activity were then assessed by molecular biology and immuno-enzymatic methods. Results: In cultured fibroblasts exposed to irradiations and treated by Cp, telomeres’ shortage and progerin expression were lower compared to irradiated untreated cells. In cultured keratinocytes treated by Cp and exposed to irradiations, the mTOR activity was lower compared to irradiated untreated cells. Conclusions: In these in vitro studies on human skin fibroblasts and on normal human keratinocytes, the cyanobacteria phycocyanin (Cp) showed a decrease of damages induced by UV and blue light expressed by telomeres preservation and downregulation of progerin expression and of mTOR activity, thus showing skin anti-aging and photo-protective potential.","PeriodicalId":15654,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications","volume":"37 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81204161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tens, if not hundreds, of brands are available to purchase legally or illegally. I have attempted in this paper to develop a scoring system for Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that makes an injector’s verdict objective, fair and unbiased, and injection experience safer. Theoretically speaking, the worst filler will have, at least, ᆠ score and the best will have a score of 34 points. Some scoring points do not exist in any filler, suggesting hints to improve all brands. Objectives: To build a Hyaluronic acid dermal filler scoring system that deals with what the injector can easily read, see or experience on their own without using sophisticated technologies or the need to understand or estimate the physics or the chemistry behind the filler. Using a scoring system that depends more on objective than subjective findings will be easy and unbiased to apply, more practical. The scoring system structure should be holistic rather than being only results centered and more focused on safety.","PeriodicalId":15654,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications","volume":"11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86841792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: This was a prospective, cross-sectional and analytical study conducted in the dermatology departments of the Borgou-Alibori Departmental Teaching Hospital and the National Teaching Hospital Hubert Koutoukou Maga from January 2017 to December 2018, which has included black-skinned patients who were diagnosed with acne and gave their free and informed consent. The ECLA score was used for clinical evaluation of the severity of the acne. Results: We collected 129 patients including 35 men and 94 women. The median age of the patient was 24.6 years ± 8.5 years. The median age of onset was 17.9 years ± 7.6 years. The main triggering of worsening factors was inadequate self-medication (53.5%), excoriation (48.1%), certain foods (34.9%) and lightening cosmetic (32.5%). Most patients had inflammatory (51.9%) or comedonal (31.8%) acne associated with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentations (70.5%) and excoriated lesions (31%). In the majority of cases, acne was moderate in women (52.1%) and severe in men (62.8%) with p = 9 × 10-3. The lesions were electively seated in the face (95.3%), mainly on the forehead and cheeks. Active cosmetics (76.7%), retinoids (58.9%), oral antibiotics (55.8%), and benzoyl peroxide (48.9%) were the most commonly used therapeutic classes. Conclusion: The majority of young and adult women consulted for predominant inflammatory acne on the forehead and cheeks, moderate in woman and severe in men in Benin. The therapeutic arsenal consisted mainly of active cosmetics, retinoids, antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide.","PeriodicalId":15654,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications","volume":"77 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91231703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
