In particular, the paper integrates the EMTR fault location technique with the protection scheme recently proposed within the EU project TWENTIES. Further, in view of the peculiarity of the fast protection schemes required by HVDC applications, the paper discusses the performances of the EMTR-based fault location technique by using limited time-windows over which the fault-generated electromagnetic transients are time-reversed. The paper also discusses the advantage of the EMTR fault location related to the use of a single observation point to the case of MTDC grids. Indeed, such a peculiarity may represent a major advantage avoiding necessary time synchronization between the MTDC-fault recording stations and might represents, also, a backup protection system. The formulation is based on the outage of generators and/or branches modelled as fictitious injections of active power. The inclusion of the sensitivities of the phase shifting transformer with respect to the injected powers is one of the novelties of this paper. By including the fictitious injections in the optimization problem, the injections are adjusted to the post-contingency state as a consequence of the corrective actions carried out by the DCOPF to bring the system back to its normal state. Consequently, when the analysis of contingencies is performed, the classical topological analysis and the subsequent analyses are avoided with this approach. The DCOPF includes as corrective control variables the rescheduling of active power generations, phase shifting transformers and, if required, permitted load shedding. The proposed algorithm, based on fixed-point iteration, allows precise simulation of nonlinear models with minimal extra simulation time cost. The identified concepts of DMG are capable of providing significant operational benefits in that they have the flexibility to respond to electricity market signals, which is particularly important in the presence of a less flexible and more intermittency dominated power system. At the same time, the formulation allows assessment of the environmental benefits under different scenarios. The paper suggests the development of the test equation technique for linear state estimation of power system facilities that are monitored on the basis of PMU measurements. New algorithms for the construction of the test equations on the basis of PMU measurements are presented. The algorithms are based on the exclusion of unmeasured variables or state vector components from the electrical circuit equations written in the rectangular coordinates. By virtue of linear nature of these equations the obtained test equations are also linear. The paper presents the algorithms for bad data detection in PMU measurements as well as the algorithms for calculation of estimates, using linear test equations which make it possible to obtain a solution within one iteration. Performance of the algorithms was tested on a test network equipped with PMUs. Under the presented approach, the hydroelectric plants are grouped into equivalent subsystems of energy and the expected cost functions are modeled by a piecewise linear approximation, by means of the convex hull algorithm. Also, under this methodology, the problem is solved independently for each subsystem such that the state variables to be considered are the energy storage and energy net interchange of the subsystem. The main improvement is based on the modeling of the so-called charge redistribution phenomenon that characterizes the dynamic voltage during charging/discharging and relaxation phases. In particular, the aim of the paper is to prove that the model recently proposed by the Authors to represent the same phenomenon in supercapacitors, can be extended also to Lithium batteries. This approach promises a better accuracy of the reactance calculation of the faulty loops. Thus, better selectivity and security in operation of the distance element applied for the protection of transmission and distribution lines is guaranteed. Moreover, with this new method the separation of the fault resistance from load condition is achieved. Due to this fact, special measures for load encroachment are not necessary. The strategy, which is based on a concept of adaptive controller, includes two steps: feedback signal selection and controller parameter tuning. The principle of the feedback signal selection is to maximize the residue of mode of concern for the feedback signal while minimizing that of other modes. Then the tuning process can focus on only the mode of concern. The proposed design strategy has been tested on two system operating points of the IEEJ East 10-machine system. The result shows that the designed controller can improve the mode of concern significantly, while it can not affect much the others.
