The study examined themes of Islamophobia and White supremacy and the media representation of the White perpetrator who carried out the attack. The analysis over eight days following the shooting identified the most prominent frames used by both network, and how these frames were employed to serve a specific context. The study found that the attack was too shocking to the extent that BBC and CNN adopted a new non-classical narrative that was not typical of western news coverage of attacks committed by White perpetrators. This shift was represented by adopting frames of ‘terrorist’ and ‘terrorism’ and avoiding the frame of ‘mentally sick perpetrator’ that used to be prevalent in western media coverage of similar attacks. Both networks associated the perpetrator with White supremacy and engaging in a terrorist attack. While both CNN and BBC framed the shooting as a terrorist attack driven by Islamophobic sentiments, the terrorism framing was more obvious on CNN than on the BBC. The White supremacist motive was highlighted by CNN, while the right-wing framing was central in the BBC coverage.","PeriodicalId":155329,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Arab & Muslim Media Research","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131851974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taking into consideration their circulation numbers, ownership and political stance, five national newspapers were examined (Hürriyet, Posta, Sabah, Sözcü and Zaman). The data covers all news reports, columns and op-eds relating to Syrian asylum seekers, published between 15 March 2011 and 31 December 2015. Based on this time sample, the representation of Syrian asylum seekers in the Turkish press was first analysed by content analysis and then by employing critical discourse analysis, drawing on the discourse-historical approach of the Vienna School. The article aims to reveal the most common discursive strategies of representing Syrian asylum seekers in the Turkish press. The overall data suggest that Turkish newspapers instrumentalized Syrian asylum seekers while positioning their editorial stance in political affairs. According to the findings, the Turkish print media most commonly represent Syrian asylum seekers with the words ‘Mülteci’ (refugee) at 53.81 per cent and ‘Sığınmacı’ (asylum seeker) at 37.44 per cent. When the labels are considered, it was seen that the Turkish press refers to ethnic identities more than religious or sectarian characteristics. Evaluating all of the quantitative and qualitative data, the article suggests that the pro-government titles deomonstrate more friendly coverage for Syrian asylum seekers. Among the papers in the sample, Sözcü disassociates itself with a clear anti-Syrian approach. Other papers have a mostly positive tone, especially if the issue is assessed in a humanitarian aspect. However, the overall positive tone should not be evaluated without the reality of ‘political parallelism’ in the Turkish media atmosphere.","PeriodicalId":155329,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Arab & Muslim Media Research","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127045788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, these shows absorb social realities and project them, feeding back to the society that creates them. In western society, especially in the United States, Arabs’ and Muslims’ characters are based on social stereotypes, contributing to their expansion of stereotypes and reflecting a totally distorted reality. Hollywood has relied on this almost from its beginning, portraying Arabs and Muslims as others, strange and dangerous beings. This representation has evolved depending on the social, political and economic conflicts of each decade.\u0000This article focuses on the significance of post-9/11 TV series as a propaganda tool, particularly in relation to cultural domination and identity conflict, using textual and content and narrative analysis to study the representation of Arabs’ and Muslims’ characters in Homeland. For this purpose, exhaustive analysis templates have been designed to assist the in-depth analysis of the characters at different levels.\u0000Since the on-screen image of these characters has been changing in recent years, the research aims to highlight a new way of configuration of Arab and Muslim characters, which transcends old representations and consolidates a new model, involving a new perspective of cultural and ideological production against Arab and Muslim identities. In this sense, the exhaustive analysis of Homeland points out that by using narrative instruments to camouflage classic discriminatory stereotypes, the show has become an epitome of ideological and propagandistic projection. Accordingly, Homeland does not propose a resignification of the stereotypes about Arabs and Muslims, despite the time that has elapsed, manifesting in a lack of cultural reconciliation which continues today.","PeriodicalId":155329,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Arab & Muslim Media Research","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124611750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of sustainability in relation to lifestyle is an important one in this country that has been associated with exuberance, luxury and overspending. Emirati citizens and expatriates alike, according to surveys, lead consumerist lifestyles characterized by above the limits spending on luxury products, which, for some, led to falling into permanent debts. A sustainable lifestyle requires a shift in mentality and media have recently opened a dialogue about the necessity of such a change. From tips for how to change spending patterns to reporting real-life stories, both negative and positive, media engage the Emirati citizens and residents in this topic. This first of its kind research is based on qualitative content and discourse analysis of the national English and Arabic language Emirati daily newspapers collected in 2019. In the process of analysis, frames, which are the cognitive structures that we use to make sense of the world around us, were extracted from a total of 258 articles in the sample. The analysis established the context and the meaning given to the concept of sustainable lifestyle produced by the news structure and the choice of words. The results of this study testify that local newspapers in the UAE play an important role in spreading financial literacy, sustainable lifestyle and tips for saving money among their readers and were doing so already ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic that highlighted the necessity of savings among audiences worldwide. The results highlight the maturity of the Emirati press in this regard.","PeriodicalId":155329,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Arab & Muslim Media Research","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114505733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The crisis has mobilized stakeholders from different departments to empower citizens and help them understand the situation, restore control, minimize risks and enhance resilience. As a result, all parties such as healthcare providers, policy-makers, public authorities and NGOs have been struggling to develop effective messaging and communication approaches in order to provide the public with information about what they can do and how they can help themselves. Communication is a vital arm when a crisis hits; it helps the audience perceive and respond to risk messages in a rational and critical way. This article examines the role of crisis communication (CC) amid coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Morocco. It aims at understanding citizens’ different perceptions and opinions about the communication approach incorporated during the crisis. A survey questionnaire was conducted with a total sample of 250 participants. The questionnaire was used to investigate the extent to which communication has helped citizens understand the crisis situation and effectively respond to its challenges. The findings highlight that Moroccans hold positive attitudes towards the communication approach adopted during the COVID-19 emergency; they acknowledge the importance and efficiency of the communicated information in shaping public perception of risk and enhancing resilience, prevention and mitigation. Thus, this article proves the assumption that CC, using different platforms and resources, can play a life-saving role in increasing understanding and enhancing risk control and disease management.","PeriodicalId":155329,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Arab & Muslim Media Research","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130098265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
