Most of the acquisition systems are limited to reconstruct a partial view of the object obtaining in blind areas and occlusions, while in most applications a full reconstruction is required. Many authors have proposed techniques to fuse 3D surfaces by determining the motion between the different views. Although the motion between these views is usually unknown, it can be computed by means of registration algorithms. In recent years, some methods have been presented: (a) iterative closest point (ICP); (b) Method of Chen; (c) signed distance fields; and (d) genetic algorithms, among others. In this paper, we reviewed the fine Range Image Registration algorithms, and a new evolutionary algorithm which marries simulated annealing with genetic algorithms (GAEA) is introduced to solve this problem. The algorithm avoids the premature convergence problem existed in genetic algorithms, enhances the globe convergence, and improves the convergence velocity. Algorithm is implemented in MATLAB because MATLAB guarantees an easy implementation. Real scanned objects are used to take into account the accuracy of the GAEA. Our experimental results showed that the introduced GAEA provided better solution.","PeriodicalId":154334,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127601555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the past thirty years, as one of spatial data sources, remote sensing datasets, which contain more information of earth surface as compared with usual urban maps, have been used in urban planning and management in China. With the development of remote sensing technology such as the high spatial resolution sensors, 3D laser scanning, data mining and advanced image processing technology, remote sensing can be widely used in the whole range of urban planning processes. In this paper, we firstly make a review of the urban remote sensing applications in urban study and planning by giving examples. Then we identify remote sensing applications in different urban planning stages including master planning, district planning, detailed planning and planning implementation as well as in urban studies. We also analyze the bottlenecks of the remote sensing applications in urban planning and management in China at the end.","PeriodicalId":154334,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129101777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The developed Permanent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI) is a further step of InSAR technique which offers a convenient processing framework that enables the use of all data acquisitions. It aims to bypass the problem of geometric and temporal decorrelation by considering long term coherent point. Furthermore, by using a large number of data, atmospheric signal is estimated and compensated for. We present in this work the development of an improved PSI, called Coherent Point Target InSAR, for land subsidence velocity field estimation in urban area as well as rural area in China. A series of case studies demonstrate the ability of CPT InSAR for monitoring ground subsidence felid with relevant large spatial extent as well as small area.","PeriodicalId":154334,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132414525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An approach for segmenting the multispectral QuickBird image based on first fundamental form is proposed. The value of multispectral image at a given point can be regarded as N-dimensional vector, and the difference of image values can be defined from the theory of first fundamental form, which allows to access gradient information from all bands simultaneously. Thus it is used to fuse the gradient feature of all bands. Then, the image segmentation is implemented based on marker-controlled watershed transform. The experimental results show that the proposed approach gives a better solution of integrating multispectral information for the segmentation of remotely sensed imagery.","PeriodicalId":154334,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132618898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) is a key property used in the characterization of atmospheric aerosol. There is a relatively long history of the quantitative estimation of AOT from remotely sensed imagery; especially the dark object method has already made many progresses in the retrieval of AOT over the areas with low surface reflectance. Based on the analysis of the advantages and limits of dark object method, extended dark object method, V5.2 algorithm and four-branched decision method, we introduce a combined method to retrieve AOT over some areas around Beijing using moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, the retrieval results are validated with AERONET data in Beijing and Xianghe sites.","PeriodicalId":154334,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114908651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach associates segmentation with recognition by constructing a hierarchical objects network at first, which effectively improves the problem of detecting targets with a modifiable sliding window existed in other methods. Then the probabilistic learning integrating multiple features including color, texture, shape and location is performed to train a multi-class classifier, and label all of the objects according to their classification values. The approach also applies spatial smoothing which incorporates contextual information to eliminate the adverse effects caused by background disturbance, occlusion and so on. After vectorization procedure, final result is given. Experiments demonstrate that proposed approach achieve high exactness and robustness in interpreting manifold urban remote sensing images.","PeriodicalId":154334,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132858048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a water body of large scale, the Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is more appropriate data for its high temporal resolution for timely and dynamic monitoring, moderate spatial resolution and no charge for acquiring data. In this paper, based on the algorithm of water body extraction and water quality parameters inversion models, and with the lower Yangtze River basin as the study area, we tended to study the comprehensive management of urban water quality using MODIS L1B data. At last, Water quality monitoring information system (WMIS) was proposed, which included three layers: data layer, processing layer and application layer. WMIS provided a new way to monitor the water quality through the integration of remote sensing data and measured data into a system.","PeriodicalId":154334,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132882545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is known that image information with different scales display distinct spatial structure, so image analysis using a single scale could not meet the heterogeneity and dynamic pattern and process for most remote sensed images. The authors present an object-oriented image analysis method that could create meaningful objects and build a hierarchical level close to surface character using multi-scale segmentation. Different geographical processes could then be represented in corresponding image-object levels. The object-oriented image analysis has realized multi-scale analysis of spatial patterns and process. The extraction of land cover classification based on an object-oriented strategy sets most priority on the multi-scale segmentation of images, the measurement of spectral, geometric and topological characteristics, the interaction between human and computer, and the construction of knowledge base. The authors use China¿Brazil Earth Resources Satellite (CBERS) CCD images taken in August of 2006. These have been geometrically corrected via methods of quadratic polynomial and bilinear interpolation to control the RMS within one pixel, choosing the typical urban building area and abundant land cover of Yixing City of Jiangsu Province (China) as the study area. The work carries out the classification experiment on the study areas using Ecognition software.","PeriodicalId":154334,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131900251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a PCA based cellular automata (CA) model for modelling urban development is presented. Compared to the conventional method of retrieving CA transition rules, the PCA model needs a small number of principal components to account for most of the structure in the datasets due to the noise reduction. The PCA-CA model is successfully applied in a fast growing area of Shanghai, eastern China. The results produced by the PCA-CA model shows that it matches well with the actual development of the case study area with relatively high accuracy.","PeriodicalId":154334,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134172668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of them is urban heat island (UHI) effect. This paper focuses on the monitoring of urban heat island effect with the temporal and spatial change using ASTER and TM data. Our study area is located in the central urban area of Beijing which mainly the area surrounded by the fifth ring road. 4 ASTER images almost in summer in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2006 were collected, and 2 TM data also in summer in 2002 and 2005 were collected. In order to calculate the urban heat island intensity, the land surface temperatures were retrieved using an iterative way to compare the temperature difference between the urban and surrounding rural area. Based on the relative temperature method, the UHI intensity was obtained for all of the satellite images. The UHI was divided into normal, weak, strong, very strong, severe and extreme by which the temporal and spatial changes of the UHI effect were compared. Generally speaking, the results indicate that the UHI effect was increased with the development of the urbanization. And the extreme UHI effect was occurred in the southeastern part of the Beijing city where almost of the industrial factories were located. The UHI effect in the old city enclosed by the second ring road was generally weak because of the relatively lager areas of water body and grassland.","PeriodicalId":154334,"journal":{"name":"2009 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132315035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
