This paper proposes the unification of RAN operation and presents a scalable RAN architectural structure for multi-RAT cellular systems. Detailed system-level simulations, for a system co-deploying HSPA and LTE, show that joint resource allocation significantly enhances the system performance and outperforms dynamic spectrum management techniques employing disjoint resource allocation.","PeriodicalId":154328,"journal":{"name":"2014 21st International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130704695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In emergency-affected networks, knowledge of realistic user mobility plays a key role to provide critical services and information. Since present models fail to capture actual post-emergency user movements, a realistic post-emergency mobility model has recently been proposed. Nevertheless, this model suffers from high evacuation delay due to hotspot issue. Simultaneously, it suffers from traffic congestion because of user initiated traffic explosion while seeking services/ information. Consequently, to alleviate these limitations, this work proposes a middleware based on the Internet-of-Things to manage user mobility in the post-emergency network. The proposed middleware, operating on a user's hand-held device, analyzes the context information obtained from the surrounding smart things to select an evacuation route for the user that optimizes the evacuation delay and the traffic congestion in the post-emergency network. Simulation results have been used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed middleware.","PeriodicalId":154328,"journal":{"name":"2014 21st International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129205434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By the approval of the Ministry of Railways of China, extensive and practical measurements are performed on Harbin-Dalian railway with a speed up to 370 km/h. Both large-scale and small-scale fading characteristics are specified. Firstly, path loss and shadowing effect are evaluated based on the hierarchical two-hop network structure. Compared with classical models, the proposed channel model is more applicable in the special via duct scenarios. Channel characteristics, such as channel impulse response, power delay profile, K-factor, delay spread and Doppler spectrum are parameterized and reported. The in-depth analysis of these statistical channel data is from the perspectives of geographical position and relative antenna height. In particular, a new stage-wise K-factor model is investigated and developed. Combined with the cumulative distribution function of the RMS delay spread and the number of paths, they illustrate the distance-dependent and antenna height-dependent variances of the channel. Finally, the two-dimensional integrated channel models are first proposed to give a comprehensive description of broadband mobile channel in high-speed railway scenario. All these informative results promote the evaluation and verification of broadband communication system on High-Speed Railway.","PeriodicalId":154328,"journal":{"name":"2014 21st International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115813685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a lifetime-based greedy caching approach (LBGC) which involves both caching decision and cache replacement. Contents are preferred to be stored in nodes with high betweenness centrality, and only expired cache items can be replaced by new arrival contents, which differs from least recently used (LRU) strategy and guarantees the caching of popular contents. Simulation results indicate that LBGC can improve the cache hit ratio and reduce average hops to get content items compared with other caching approaches.","PeriodicalId":154328,"journal":{"name":"2014 21st International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"10 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113990267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The original generating method of this class of codes restricts the length (or period) of the codewords to the set {2, 4, 16, 256, 65536}. In this paper we use an alternative generation method based on the algebraic properties of Zech logarithms that allow us to generalize the construction in a systematic manner and improving the codeword length choices, code size and minimum distance. The performance of these generalized codewords are then evaluated using both AWGN and Rayleigh communication channels and qualitatively compared with the originally extended TCH codewords.","PeriodicalId":154328,"journal":{"name":"2014 21st International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129529423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Actually, it permits avoiding RF interferences on medical equipment and ensuring zero RF exposure for the patient and the medical staff. To perform wireless optical on-body communication, we study a diffuse optical transmission scheme based on optical reflections over the environment. The investigated scenario is the optical communication between a sensor node and a hub both placed on the patient body. In this paper, we propose a new, fast and simple method to determine the communication performance considering the environment and the presence of an obstacle above the hub. Thanks to this method, we discuss the effect on the performance of optical reflection coefficients of the different reflective surfaces. It permits improving the design of a diffuse wireless optical link for our health monitoring application, by taking into account the environment.","PeriodicalId":154328,"journal":{"name":"2014 21st International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129854326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering the constraints of wireless system in signal delay and hardware implementation, we propose a modified AGC algorithm module with low-latency and low-complexity, which significantly lowers the data rate while maintaining an acceptable distortion. The final compression solution with the proposed algorithm can achieve about 30% compression ratio, only with EVM close to 2% and delay no more than 18 clock cycle (CLK), which has been illustrated by the theoretical analysis and simulation.","PeriodicalId":154328,"journal":{"name":"2014 21st International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128619579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the frequency resource sharing problem of D2D multicast communications underlying single frequency network (SFN) system is investigated. Firstly, to avoid the interference between D2D and cellular communication and without consuming more frequency resources, we assume that D2D multicast groups do not share frequency with cellular user equipments (CUEs) in the same SFN, but reuse frequency with CUEs in other SFNs. Then, according to a pre-setting threshold of signal to interference ratio (SIR) of D2D communication, a reuse safe distance is confirmed. Finally, a round-robin resource allocation algorithm is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed resource sharing algorithm can significantly reduce the outage probability of both D2D and cellular communication and enhance the throughput of system.","PeriodicalId":154328,"journal":{"name":"2014 21st International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128535730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study the impact of Medium Access Control (MAC) layer fairness on the throughput performance of the network for the cases of pure relaying, digital NC with and without overhearing and physical layer NC with and without overhearing. We provide a comparison among these techniques and we discuss the throughput bounds, due to MAC layer limitations, imposed to the system operation by broadly adopted short range communication protocols that provide for fair resource allocation such as IEEE 802.11. Furthermore, we show that significant coding gains are achieved with digital and physical layer NC and we discuss on the energy efficiency performance of each NC case when applied on the Cross Network.","PeriodicalId":154328,"journal":{"name":"2014 21st International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128943963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper shows that there is an inherent latency in video playback when TCP with random linear NC is employed. With the objective of reducing latency and jitter at the receiver, the paper proposes a Variable Bucket size based Network Coding (VBNC) technique that modifies the TCP congestion control to adapt to the arriving traffic and dynamic network conditions. Simulation results demonstrate that on an average the proposed algorithm reduces observed latency at playback by 80% and jitter by more than 50% over standard TCP. More importantly, a significant reduction in the initial start-up delay is observed which enhances the performance of streaming services.","PeriodicalId":154328,"journal":{"name":"2014 21st International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125022091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
