The hypermedia support approaches the issues in communication, agreement, and traceability management, which are critical in the early phase in requirements analysis. Our approach consists of(l) an extension of the Inquiry Cycle model, a cyclic model of requirements analysis, for the collaborative work, and (2) comprehensive interaction media that fully utilizes WWW (World Wide Web) and Internet technologies. In this paper, we review the lessons learnt from experiences in applying the Inquiry Cycle model and Tuiqiao, a hypertext tool based on the model, to collaborative work in requirements analysis of a telephone directory service. We then propose an extension of the model and discuss the design of EColabor, a networked hypermedia system for requirements analysis. EColabor is based on the extended Inquiry Cycle model and implemented with the web and Internet technologies, including distributed version control and audio/video conferencing.","PeriodicalId":152956,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Requirements Engineering","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130449602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The SFMEA process was found to be successful in identifying some ambiguous, inconsistent, and missing requirements. More importantly, the SFMEA process, followed by a backward analysis somewhat similar to fault tree analysis (FTA), identified four significant, unresolved requirements issues. These issues involved complex system interfaces and unanticipated dependencies. Our results challenge some current views on the limitations of SFMEA and suggest that recent efforts by researchers to integrate SFMEA with a broader FTA approach have merit.","PeriodicalId":152956,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Requirements Engineering","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124548154","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A group of systems engineers modeled the behavior of diverse airplane systems. The lessons learned by these engineers are described and categorized as lessons about statechart modeling and lessons about tool features that do a good job of supporting statechart modeling. While statecharts provided a robust semantic with which to model behavior the most powerful experience for the users came from their ability to see the effect of their models via the tool's dynamic simulation and interactive animation features.","PeriodicalId":152956,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Requirements Engineering","volume":"204 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115493896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These techniques are used in situations where it is difficult for the expert to articulate their knowledge in response to direct questions. The techniques were compared in terms of the number of attributes elicited, the ease with which these data were obtained, and the degree of post-analysis and interpretation required. The study was conducted in the domain of airline safety inspections and the objective was to define inspection indicators. The results of this study indicate that the repertory grid analysis method generates all of the attributes produced by the other two methods, that it is easy to apply in the field, and is useful without complex analysis and re-interpretation of the results.","PeriodicalId":152956,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Requirements Engineering","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116644089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper describes a case study at Ericsson Radio Systems AB of two techniques for software requirements prioritizing as a means for determining the importance of candidate requirements, a pairwise comparison technique and a numeral assignment technique. The results from the case study indicate that the pairwise comparison technique is an efficient informative and accurate means for finding the candidate requirements importance. We therefore recommend the pairwise comparison technique for software requirements prioritizing. At Ericsson we have extended its use in other development projects.","PeriodicalId":152956,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Requirements Engineering","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134147125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, we discuss three GIS application scenarios, the so-called topological scenario, the network scenario, and the (spatio-) temporal scenario, frequently encountered in real life projects. Our investigations reveal that conventional RE-methods like, for example, Coad/Yourdon's Object-Oriented Analysis (OOA) cannot model GIS-specific requirements appropriately. To overcome the deficiencies of conventional OOA we introduce GeoOOA which complements OOA by suitable domain-tailored primitives and allows for a more adequate treatment of GIS-specific requirements. We provide GeoOOA models of a broadcasting corporation, an electric power supply system and a land registry as first validation steps for the usefulness of GeoOOA.","PeriodicalId":152956,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Requirements Engineering","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130474097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It remains informal and poorly understood. We studied the conceptual design activities of a representative industrial software project, Centauri, for three months with follow up observations and discussions over the following six months. Our goal was to understand how patterns of collaboration and communication in project teams affect the convergence of the project on a common vision and a documented specification. We present our research methodology, our findings, and their implications for process and tool support. The following observations stand out. First, convergence on a common system vision was painfully slow. The major impediment to faster progress was the difficulty that the project team had in making critical allocation and interface design decisions. Second, Centauri project members repeatedly raised certain issues and failed to reach closure on key problems. Finally, we observed a persistent tension between the desire on behalf of nearly all project members to follow a prescriptive development process and the urgency of delivering a working product.","PeriodicalId":152956,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Requirements Engineering","volume":"57 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124083702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Requirements clustering is essential for a software development approach called incremental delivery (ID). A successful clustering of system requirements produces a set of useful, usable, and semi-independent clusters that can be developed and delivered to the customers in increments. The paper presents a requirements clustering process based on ER modeling, scenarios, and the formal specification notation Z.","PeriodicalId":152956,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Requirements Engineering","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121549098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper describes an exploratory knowledge based tool for identifying potential conflicts among quality attributes early in the software/ system life cycle. The Quality Attribute Risk and Conflict Consultant (QARCC) examines the quality attribute tradeoffs involved in software architecture and process strategies. It operates in the context of the USC CSE WinWin system, a groupware support system for determining software and system requirements as negotiated win conditions. We have developed and experimented with an initial QARCC 1 prototype. We are using the results of the experiment to develop an improved QARCC 2 tool. From our initial experimentation, we concluded that QARCC can alert users, developers, customers, and other stakeholders to conflicts among their software quality requirements and can help them identify additional, potentially important quality requirements. We also concluded that QARCC needs further refinement to avoid overloading users with insignificant quality conflict suggestions. We are now refining the knowledge base to address more detailed quality attributes in a more selective fashion.","PeriodicalId":152956,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Requirements Engineering","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129406232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tracing helps in verifying system features against requirements, in identifying error sources, and most significantly, in managing change, which is pervasive and continuous in software development. We describe a tool called TOOR (Traceability of Object Oriented Requirements) that is based on principles from hyperprogramming (J. Goguen, 1990) and hyperrequirements (J. Goguen and Luqi, 1995), and is motivated by the considerations about context and information discussed by J. Goguen (1996), and about the importance of the social discussed by J. Goguen (1994). TOOR uses the sophisticated module system of FOOPS (J. Goguen, 1987) for flexibility, reuse and object orientation.","PeriodicalId":152956,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Requirements Engineering","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114605981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
