We consider the problem of smoothing the output of a PV farm using a battery with a moving average filter and a filter based on optimal control formulation. We provide analytical bounds on the ramp rate and battery size required to implement the moving average filter. We then show that the filter using optimal control formulation significantly outperforms the moving average filter. We compare the performance of the two filters using actual solar irradiance data.","PeriodicalId":149134,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition","volume":"359 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132163014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper explores two novel methods of single to three-phase conversion. Each method relies on creating or deriving a third phase to complement existing single-phase, three-wire configurations. An ideal three-phase voltage source case is modeled and these two cases are compared against the ideal three-phase source conditions. Each case analyzes line and motor current, as well as torque and speed profiles. Required concepts in electrical machinery, power distribution, and power electronics are discussed to familiarize the reader with the proposed conversion techniques. Some concepts are modified for application specific use, but retain basic form and functionality.","PeriodicalId":149134,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132763105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This generalized Fortescue π equivalent is defined in this paper for solving the heterogeneous phase, and thus Fortescue, network model. The performance of the approach is demonstrated in different model networks with number of nodes ranging between 168 and 14200. It is found that the current iteration method exploiting the decoupling in admittance matrix in Fortescue coordinate is substantially faster than the typical unbalanced three-phase solution in phase domain. The method has a significant potential for application in real time active power network management.","PeriodicalId":149134,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133174475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An emerging issue is that a PEV parking deck needs a systematic optimal price reference for tomorrow's operation on electricity sale prices and parking fees for customers. This paper introduces a system including a price mechanism and three charging scenarios for different types of PEV parking decks to maximize their total revenue for the next 24 hours. Because different types of parking decks have various traffic behaviors (e.g., arrival and departure distribution), this system provides an exclusive price reference for each parking deck operator according to its historical traffic behaviors. First, the mathematical model of this system is introduced considering the real world constraints. Second, the case studies are performed to simulate the real world charging scenarios over 24 hours. The results provide the marginal electricity sale price for operators to decide the electricity sale price for customers in order to maintain the total revenue for tomorrow's operation. Finally, the expected total revenues of the next 24 hours are given by using three charging scenarios after the price decision has been made.","PeriodicalId":149134,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127432462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New PSH technologies, like adjustable-speed PSH, have also been introduced and can present further benefits. An understanding of these benefits on systems with high penetrations of variable generation (VG) is a primary focus. This paper will demonstrate and quantify some of the reliability and efficiency benefits afforded by pumped storage hydro plants utilizing the Flexible Energy Scheduling Tool for Integrating Variable generation (FESTIV), an integrated power system operations tool which evaluates both reliability and production costs. A description about the FESTIV tool and how it simulates PSH operations at multiple timescales will be given. Impacts of PSH on area control error, production costs, and system operation are quantified on a high VG scenario in the Balancing Area of Northern California. We also perform a study on how advanced PSH can provide a fast form of regulation to improve reliability and potentially reduce costs.","PeriodicalId":149134,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127461313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accurate forecasting is regarded as the most practical way to win power bid in today's highly competitive electricity market. Comparing with existing price forecasting methods, random forest, as a newly introduced method, will provide a price probability distribution, which will allow the users to estimate the risks of their bidding strategy and also making the results helpful for later industrial using. Furthermore, the model can adjust to the latest forecasting condition, i.e. the latest climatic, seasonal and market condition, by updating the random forest parameters with new observations. This adaptability avoids the model failure in a climatic or economic condition different from the training set. A case study in New York HUD VL area is presented to evaluate the proposed model.","PeriodicalId":149134,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115388089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PLL has an impact on power transferred to the grid from VSC due to active/reactive power current regulation aligned to PLL reference frame. DC-link voltage, directly related to power flows, is then affected by PLL dynamics. Interactions between PLL and DC-link voltage control are more serious in weak grid where terminal voltage, as input of PLL, becomes susceptible to power flow variations in VSC. In this paper, a system with VSC connected to infinite bus via grid impedance is studied for operating in inverter mode. Deteriorated DC-link voltage small signal stability is presented with quick PLL response as short circuit ratio (SCR) becomes significantly low. It may be possible for PLL to improve the DC-link voltage large signal stability due to its effect on power transfer.","PeriodicalId":149134,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115441947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due attention has to be paid on this added wind uncertainty when setting the SR requirement. For obtaining the more optimal and reasonable results, a technique that SR determination can be dealt should be researched in wind power integration system. Therefore, with involving wind farm output variables, the fresh and upgrade Robust Linear Optimization (RLO) which proposed by Seong-Cheol Kang is firstly introduced into constructing the model of minimum generating the cost of conventional generators (CGs) and SR cost and its optimal capacity in this paper. The wind farm output was described as its minimum, maximum and mean values in the model through the SCK robust linear optimization theory. The reliability for optimal SR capacity and total cost can be preliminarily calculated under a variety of wind power fluctuation in this model. The validity of the proposed method will be verified by the test results of the IEEE-30 bus system. The relationships of wind uncertainties and required SRs can also be confirmed.","PeriodicalId":149134,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115481015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
