While the World Health Organization (WHO) defines adolescence as the period from 10 to 19 years old, in Brazil it is recognized as the age range from 12 to 18 years old. This distinction is important for epidemiological investigations, as well as the development of public policies, social programs, and targeted interventions. This work is grounded in an Integrative Review conducted from August 2019 to October 2019, utilizing electronic databases available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, including the Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Nursing Database BDENF, and PubMed. The review process involved several stages: formulating the main research question, selecting articles based on inclusion criteria, excluding irrelevant studies, evaluating the selected articles, interpreting the results, and presenting the integrative review. Through critical analysis of the literature, relevant information was extracted and validated by a researcher. A total of 10 articles were included in this study, sourced from various databases: 5 from VHL, 2 from SciELO, 2 from LILACS, 3 from PubMed, and 3 from BDENF. This study underscores the importance of adopting a clinical practice approach to enhance professional resourcefulness and suggests avenues for future research.","PeriodicalId":14869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical Research","volume":"17 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140264276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to compare the immediate effects of infrared light photobiomodulation on salivary flow and pH in individuals experiencing xerostomia. Twenty adults with xerostomia participated in the study, divided into two groups: Group 1 (G1) received extraoral photobiomodulation treatment, and Group 2 (G2) received both intra and extraoral treatment. Stimulated saliva was collected before and immediately after light application. In G1, the photobiomodulation was applied using a cluster (808 nm, 120 mW, 24J), while G2 received treatment with a pointer (808 nm, 100mW, 6J per point). The results confirmed our hypothesis, showing a statistically significant increase in immediate salivary flow stimulation with the headgear technique (G1) (p= 0.037). Analyzing the percentage of volume variation (ml) per minute, the average salivary flow increased from 0.86 ml/min to 1.2 ml/min after extraoral application with an infrared laser cluster, representing a 7% increase. In conclusion, the protocol involving only extraoral application was effective in stimulating salivary flow. Further research is needed to understand the specific mechanisms behind these differences and optimize photobiomodulation techniques for xerostomia management. This study found that using external infrared photobiomodulation can immediately increase salivary flow in xerostomia patients, potentially offering a comfortable and effective symptom management method. It emphasizes the need for refining these techniques and further research to understand long-term effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":14869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical Research","volume":"44 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140419177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their anti-apoptotic activity, cost-effectiveness, and convenient oral administration make them effective treatments, either as standalone therapies or in combination with other drugs. However, their use is limited by a narrow therapeutic window, which can lead to potential complications due to organ accumulation and non-specific actions in healthy cells. This risk necessitates exploration into safer clinical applications using nanotechnology. \u0000Aim: This scoping review aims to comprehensively assess and analyze the application of nanotechnology to enhance the therapeutic efficacy and safety of CQ and HCQ. \u0000Methods: A meticulous search for original studies on nanoparticle formulations of “chloroquine” and “hydroxychloroquine” was conducted. Two reviewers screened titles and abstracts, followed by a detailed assessment of the full articles. Inclusion criteria encompassed original studies in English, Spanish, or Portuguese, focusing on in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo evaluations. \u0000Results: After an exhaustive search across selected databases, 30 articles were meticulously chosen for comprehensive evaluation. The most common properties found for nanoparticles included sizes ranging from 100 to 300 nm, a zeta potential lower than -10, with dendritic derivatives being the most encountered types. Materials used in both production and coating varied, influencing the release and specificity of the nanocarrier. Among therapeutic activities, antimalarial and antitumor activities were the most studied. \u0000Conclusion: Studies have demonstrated distinct characteristics acquired by these drugs after encapsulation in various nanoparticles, including reduced toxicity, increased specificity, prolonged systemic circulation, absence of toxic peaks, and potential for different therapeutic approaches.","PeriodicalId":14869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical Research","volume":"42 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140434296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite progress in the management of Alport syndrome, effective treatment options are limited. This systematic review aimed to synthesize current evidence regarding potential therapeutic interventions for Alport syndrome. \u0000Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across databases including PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. The eligibility criteria included studies involving patients with Alport syndrome undergoing interventions such as bardoxolone methyl, ramipril, or losartan. Both randomized control trials and non-randomized clinical trials were considered. Key outcomes were changes in renal function parameters and disease progression. Study selection, data extraction, and synthesis were conducted according to standard systematic review guidelines. \u0000Results: A total of 137 studies were identified initially, with four studies meeting the eligibility criteria. These studies collectively included 313 patients with a mean age range of 8.8 to 39.2 years. Three pharmacological interventions were evaluated - bardoxolone methyl, ramipril, and losartan. All demonstrated beneficial impacts on kidney function parameters. Bardoxolone methyl and ramipril showed potential in slowing disease progression, while losartan significantly lowered proteinuria. An additional finding was that the severity of the genetic variant of the disease might impact disease progression and treatment outcomes. \u0000Conclusion: The findings of this systematic review suggest that bardoxolone methyl, ramipril, and losartan may offer promising interventions for managing Alport syndrome, potentially slowing disease progression and improving kidney function. However, the need for larger, more rigorous trials is evident to substantiate these findings and to explore the impact of genetic variant severity on disease progression and treatment response. This review underscores the importance of continued research efforts in improving therapeutic strategies and personalizing treatment for patients with Alport syndrome.","PeriodicalId":14869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical Research","volume":"11 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140435664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, relevant studies found in various databases were analysed, including PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Scielo, Bireme, Google Scholar and Web of Science. The selected studies were assessed in terms of their objectives, methodology, results and conclusions, with the aim of providing a comprehensive understanding of the current state of evidence on the subject. From the articles by Serrano-Giménez et al. [1], Wang et al. [2] Jaworski et al ([3], Tong et al. [4], Khilji et al. [5], Moreker et al. [6], Soares et al. [7], CUARTERO-MARTINEZ et al. [13], trends, knowledge gaps and recommendations for clinical practice and future research were identified. As a result, the studies analysed showed a variety of outcomes in relation to the efficacy and safety of insulin eye drops in the treatment of neurotrophic corneal ulcers. There was also a lack of standardisation in the methods used and the evaluation measures, highlighting the need for a more uniform approach in subsequent studies. The main trends identified indicate that insulin eye drops can be effective in treating corneal neurotrophic ulcers, especially in refractory stages. However, there is a need for further research to define more precise diagnostic criteria and more standardised assessment measures. In conclusion, this systematic review has provided a solid basis for future research into the use of insulin eye drops in the treatment of corneal neurotrophic ulcers. The recommendations resulting from this study have the potential to inform clinical practice and guide future research in this field, with the aim of improving these procedures for patients with this specific ophthalmological condition.","PeriodicalId":14869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical Research","volume":"10 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140442966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
