Our past studies of CDM for fiber optic networks of intensity modulating devices revealed that sensor-sensor crosstalk levels in the range of -60 dB are within reach and that a large number of sensor signals can be multiplexed. Our current effort aims to analyse the noise properties of interferometric networks interrogated using this scheme. Typical targeted figures of merits are; noise < 10 /spl mu/rad//spl radic/Hz, dynamic range > 80 dB, sensor bandwidth > 5 kHz, sensor to sensor crosstalk < 40 dB, number of sensors in each subarray > 30.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest. Dyott et al, Elect. Lett. vol. 15, no. 13, pp. 380-382, 1979). The work was transferred to Andrew at Orland Park, Illinois in September 1979. The subsequent development in 1982 of the D fiber (R.B. Dyott and P.F. Schrank, Elect. Lett., vol. 18, no. 22, pp. 980-981, 1982), which made the evanescent field of the waveguide accessible, resulted in a fused directional coupler (R.B. Dyott and J. Bello, Elect. Letters, vol. 19, p. 601, 1983) and a fiber polarizer (R.B. Dyott, Optics Letters, vol. 12, p. 287, 1987); the bones of fiber sensors. The first packaged gyro was produced in 1987 as a potential replacement for the mechanical gyros that were being used for antenna stabilization in ships of the US Navy. However it was limited by the very short lifetime of its superluminescent diode light source. This paper summarizes gyro development and production, both at Andrew and at KVH Industries which acquired the gyro product line and production facilities from Andrew in 1997.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest. The high sensitivity of the FFPI sensors allowed for the measurement of strain forces affecting roller element bearings. Tests were carried out to compare the time waveforms for load comparisons and their respective spectra of generated bearing frequencies to expected values of such bearings. Further tests were conducted to assess the effects of imbalance added to the shaft, rotational speed, and impulses on the rotor system. Positions of observed spectral peaks show good agreement with predictions. These results indicate that fiber optic sensors can provide a unique capability for bearing monitoring in today's machinery.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest. The RAPTOR represents a careful integration of optics, fluidics, electronics, and software into one compact system. This unit can automatically perform a user-defined, multi-step assay while simultaneously recording the signal from fluorescently-conjugated reporter antibodies as they bind to the surface of each of the system's four optical waveguides located in the disposable injection molded coupon. The RAPTOR can be used for high-sensitivity monitoring of biological agents and toxins in the lab or in the field.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest. In the last few years there has been considerable interest in the telecommunications community in deploying arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) produced in a range of technologies in a variety of roles. We feel it is therefore surprising that there have been very few reports of research into using AWGs for sensing. In this paper we consider some possible roles for these devices in interrogation systems for interferometric and fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest. The wavelength-encoded nature of the reflected signals from FBGs allows for absolute strain measurement and for multi-point operation based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). To measure strain variation with good accuracy, detection of the small shift in the Bragg wavelength is essential. In this paper, we report the use of a digital matched filter (DMF) for improving the wavelength detection accuracy. The DMF technique has been used extensively in image processing and pattern recognition for the detection of weak signals in a noisy environment. We apply it here for the detection of Bragg wavelength in FBG sensors when the SNR is low.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest.
