A wide range of liquid level sensing techniques have been reported based around mechanical, electrical, and optical methods. Electrical liquid level sensors are widely employed, but their applicability is compromised if the liquid to be monitored is conductive or if the environment is potentially explosive. Optical fibre sensors offer well-established advantages under these conditions. The optical fibre is a dielectric, and thus is non-conducting, and the sensor may be configured such the light is confined within the fibre, reducing the likelihood of ignition of a flammable environment. In this paper a liquid level sensor is demonstrated by exploiting the refractive index sensitivity of long period gratings (LPGs) to measure the length of the fibre immersed in a liquid.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest. When used for passive demodulation in interferometric systems, changes in SOP will cause noise and inaccuracies in the calculated phase, even in systems employing Faraday rotator mirrors to prevent fringe visibility fading. Hence, the effects of polarization must be controlled by, for example, using a depolarized source or by realtime monitoring of the coupler phase angles. Future studies will extend the investigation to a variety of coupler types and to an investigation of the dependence of the complex scattering matrix on wavelength.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest. To engineer strain or temperature sensors, based on the fluorescence lifetime or fluorescence intensity ratio techniques, with desirable characteristics requires detailed understanding of the physical origin of the strain dependency of these fluorescence effects. It has been suggested that the cause is slight shifts in the energy levels, since some of the important levels in rare-earth-doped crystals shift when subjected to considerable pressure. However, recent theoretical work analysing the two techniques, and outlined in the next section, does not support this idea. Instead, in that work, it was proposed that this sensitivity is due to a volumetric distortion of the energy transfer rates between the dopant ions. In this model an applied strain results in a slight decrease in concentration. To explore this latter idea, strain and temperature dependencies of Nd/sup 3+/-doped optical fibres of various concentrations have been analysed using this model. Existing data have been supplemented by new measurements, giving the sensitivities for the two techniques at a number of dopant concentrations.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest.
