Individuals learn what they want, when they\u0000want, and where they want. All this freedom is accomplished by a variety of technologies. Hence technologies in printed\u0000and non-printed formats can be used. This study focused on the challenges that students encountered on the E-learning\u0000Platform at the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU). The study used a qualitative approach using a case study design.\u0000Structured interviews and document analysis were used to collect the data. According to Flick (2009) these enables the\u0000generation of appropriate descriptive information on the phenomenon under study. Purposive sampling was used\u0000identify the students; lecturers from the four faculties of the ZOU who have used the e-platform Key informants from the\u0000Information, Communication Technology (ICT) department of ZOU were also interviewed. The findings of the study show\u0000that ODL students face challenges when accessing the e-platform. Students, lecturers and even most ICT personnel do\u0000not have the capacity to use the myVista internet based programme. This is an e-tutoring programme which allows\u0000learning to occur between the student and the tutor on line. The study recommended as a priority that all students,\u0000lecturers and key ICT personnel be trained in the use of the e-platform especially the myVista programme. ZOU should\u0000put in place a policy on how e-tutoring should be conducted. This would help to make the e-platform materials student\u0000friendly. Furthermore there is need to improve students’ computer literacy skills.

Proverbs related to animals have special figurative meaning in every culture. In this article we extracted 88 English proverbs which related to animals and made a contrastive analysis with their equivalences in Persian proverbs. We were able to find just about 70.5 percentages of their equivalence in Persian proverbs. Among them, 8 percentages had the same animal names and 11.3 percentages had different animal names which used for the same function. Furthermore other 51.2 percentages of equivalences had formed completely with different words without any animal names. Analyzing the content of proverbs also showed that the name of “dog”, “cat” and “horse” have the top frequency of usage in these English proverbs. It seems that being reachable, domestic and closeness of these animals to human lives could be the cause of this higher frequency. Culturally in both Persian and English proverbs, the name of “DOG” usually has negative, vile and lowbred meaning, “CAT” has less negative meaning and finally “HORSE” in both languages has neutral meaning.

The paper explores the significance of IKS or lack of it from a gender perspective. The general assumption that seems to be coming from academic works is that IKS are the panacea for world challenges, particularly in Africa. There is a tendency to romanticise IKS and gloss over some of their life-denying tenets. The question at hand is: To what extent are IKS sensitive to gender? The dearth of literature on this perspective calls for research and it is this gap that the paper fills in. The paper argues that not all IKS are worth the salt. There is need for what we may call ‘IKS hermeneutics’ 3 before IKS are embraced as both liberative and life affirming to humanity. Cultural hermeneutics informs the direction the study takes. The ‘deadly weapon of culture’ (Dube, 2003) as part of IKS views women as the ‘significant others’. The oppressive nature of such IKS are interrogated through critical discourse analysis of existing literature and in-depth interviews. It is prudent to admit that not all IKS are ‘safe space’ for most of African women and men alike. This, therefore, calls for the theory of ‘feminist cultural hermeneutics’.

The study focused on internet access and use, Internet usage and monitoring, policy on personal use of internet in the institution and implementation of policies. It also examined how Internet is restricted and common Internet misuse problems. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 350 respondents in the institution out of which 290 (82.9%) responded and were used for the analysis. Descriptive and Inferential statistics was used to analyze the data using percentage table and simple regression analysis to test the association between the variables. Findings showed that more than half of the respondents have access to and use Internet for their working activities. It was also revealed that most of employees use Local Area Network and Direct subscriber license / Wide area network as their connection type. The study established that higher percentage of the respondents indicated that monitoring of the use of Internet is not practiced. More so small number of the respondents indicated that the institution have written policy on Internet use. It further revealed that just 3.2% of employee has been dismissed on misuse of institutional web sites. Thus implementation of policy, awareness and compliance with policy is yet to find the right foot in the institution, the study therefore recommended formulation of relevant Internet regulation policy as well as publicizing the policy.

The key role of education towards the attainment of sustainable development has made qualitative education a key component of the Seven-Point Agenda of sustainable integration. Religious intolerance is taken as the key imperative for dialogue. Anti-Semiticism which resulted in the Jewish holocaust is cited as the worst effect of religious intolerance. The tolerant marriage model eliminates the insider-outsider paradigm. The dialoguer, by understanding the ‘other’ from within, enhances selfunderstanding. Many of those interviewed showed growth curves that demonstrated the functional nature of the marriage model. The paper however, in its phenomenological analysis, had problems with such habits as disowning of offspring and acceptance of marriage for gain.

However, poverty still remains a major challenge especially in sub-Saharan Africa where the proportion of people below the poverty line is on the rise. Efforts towards poverty reduction in this region have included among other things the creation of local development agencies. This paper uses both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection to examine the contributions of local development agencies towards poverty reduction in the South West Region of Cameroon. The paper concludes that though local development agencies are a major partner in the fight against poverty, their successes are usually short-lived. No real transformation takes place as five years down the road, the number of poor does not reduce, nor the poor transformed into non-poor.

Despite its relevance to social development, providing apposite and effective care services to elderly men and women is still a major challenge in contemporary Cameroon. This is largely due to the weak institutional support system and poverty which estrange the elderly and jeopardizes their wellbeing. Deconstructing the current care system through the redesigning and implementation of age friendly policies will create substantial opportunities that will predispose the old, irrespective of gender to valued choices and quality lives. This paper describes the challenges experienced by the aged and examines the institutional framework for care with alternatives for social development. The study involved 31 elderly and employed an ethnographic survey design with interviews, focus group discussions, participant observation and documentary sources as instruments. Data was analyzed qualitatively and findings show that in as much as organizing the system from a multisectorial approach is imperative, the voices of elderly and the consistent provision of basic needs is also strategic to their social development.
