In this study, bonding process factors, viz. mechanical pretreatment (surface planing) and bonding pressure in conjunction with wood preservative and adhesive compatibility for improved bond performance in preservative-treated E. grandis laminates were investigated. The results obtained showed significant and satisfactory improvement in shear strength and delamination resistance of E. grandis laminates based on EN 14080:2013 [Timber structures — Glued laminated timber and glued solid timber — Requirements, BSI Stand. Publ. (2014) 1–110] requirements. The suitability of polyurethane, melamine-urea-formaldehyde, and phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde adhesives for bonding copper azole (CA) and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT)-impregnated E. grandis wood was established. Satisfactory pathways, including greener process routes for manufacturing CA and DOT-impregnated E. grandis laminates for structural applications in tropical and subtropical climes were achieved. The established processes could be readily adopted industrially to enhance the global implementation of solid wood composites and promote hardwood bonding.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"13 1","pages":"139 - 147"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42126612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At first corn flour was esterified by maleic anhydride and 10% polyisocyanate was added to it. The modified corn flour was then added at various contents (2, 4 and 6% on resin solids) to phenolated lignin and glyoxal solution to obtain the CLG resin. According to the FTIR spectra, the ester groups (-C=O) at 1730 cm-1 increased due to the esterification of corn flour by maleic anhydride. The addition of the modified corn flour significantly increased the viscosity and solid content and accelerated the gelation time of CLG resins. DSC analysis indicated that increasing the modified corn flour continuously decreases the gel onset and curing temperatures of the resin. Greater mechanical strength and higher dimensional stability of panels bonded with CLG resins can be obtained by modification of corn flour.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"13 1","pages":"119 - 126"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49341880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mathematical model for the arc drive of the saw cutting unit was developed, based on the two-dimensional theory. The new technology to improve performance of LIM, driving circular saw, was proposed. According to this technology, thin copper plates are placed on the saw surface, causing a better power factor of such linear induction drive. The series of experiments were conducted. The achieved results show a good match with theoretical calculations, confirming the developed mathematical model. The examined drive with copper-plated disc saw revealed significant improvements to the electrical and mechanical characteristics of such combined linear induction drive.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"13 1","pages":"115 - 118"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46856453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is characterized with 47.0% α-cellulose and 28.8% lignin content with a fibre length of 1.11 mm. The vessels (pores) are distinct and form porous semi-rings, with a row of larger pores at the beginning of the growth layer, which facilitate penetration of chemicals during the cooking phase of pulping. Kraft pulping of E. fusca was carried out by varying cooking temperature, time and alkali charge. At optimum condition of 14% active alkali for 2 h of cooking at 170°C, pulp yield was 40% with kappa number of 26.6. The papermaking properties were also evaluated and showed tensile index of 52.4 N m g−1 with tear index of6.8 mN m2 g−1 at oSR of 57. This species can be used as a raw material for writing and printing grade pulp.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"13 1","pages":"107 - 114"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49006332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Total of 19 trees from four species were used in this study. Log taper and juvenile wood percentage increased from base to treetop in all species, except for log taper in Pinus sylvestris. Dynamic young’s modulus of logs decreased from base to treetop, and the mean values were 7.81, 5.74, 7.12, and 8.78 GPa for Pinus sylvestris, Pinus sibirica, Picea obovata, and Larix sibirica, respectively. Basic density increased (Pinus sylvestris and Larix sibirica) or decreased (Pinus sibirica and Picea obovata) and then became stable values. The estimated whole tree values of basic density in juvenile wood significantly differed from those in mature wood for all species.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"13 1","pages":"99 - 106"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44923160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Machine structure was redesigned to reduce noise and unevenness of such sawing. A crawler track is driven by an auxiliary wheel. The roller seat on top of the board saw stabilises chain pieces. Investigations revealed some influencing mechanical factors, including static deformation, resonance excitation, and rigid body collision. A complete chain feed model was constructed to analyse related acoustic noise. Quantitative analysis enabled a successful redesign of chain feed elements. Chain feed simulation enabled the reduction of conflicting factors and revealed the optimal shape for chain links. The structural deformation of die casting indicated the possibility of variation in the chain shape. The flatness of the chain surface was reduced, and noise generated during the collision of links was minimised. Simplified modelling enabled identification of problems in the multi-blade system.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"13 1","pages":"73 - 82"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2022-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44953631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present investigation, reinforced wood–plastic composites (WPCs) were manufactured incorporating crumb rubber. The bulk density of crumb rubber-reinforced WPC was found to be 19% higher than the baseline materials. This indicated that crumb rubber assisted in the consolidation process. Both baseline and crumb rubber-reinforced WPC materials were mechanically characterized according to ASTM D 1037. Compression modulus of crumb rubber-reinforced WPC showed an increase of 200% as compared to baseline WPC. Cone calorimetry demonstrated that the peak heat release rate, the maximum average rate of heat emission (MARHE), effective heat of combustion, and fuel load of crumb rubber-reinforced WPC were lower than the baseline WPC. Nonetheless, it was observed that the amount of CO and CO2 produced were more in the case of crumb rubber-reinforced WPC.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"13 1","pages":"41 - 49"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48047610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
