The Weibull distribution function is widely accepted for evaluating the wind probability using scale and shape parameter. This paper presents modeling of scale and shape parameter to assess the wind potential at a selected wind site. A case study is carried out to validate the developed model by collecting wind data over a period of year 2008 at 10m height for the wind site of BEC, Bagalkot, Karnataka, India. It is observed from the results that using the scale parameter and shape parameter of the Weibull distribution function, a choice is made for selecting an appropriate rating of wind turbine for the particular wind site.","PeriodicalId":143947,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Power, Signals, Controls and Computation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133787833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed non-linear optimization problem considers simultaneous minimization of deviations from scheduled transactions and minimization of fuel cost of the generators. The problem is formulated as a constrained optimization problem in a way that insures a secure-economic system operation. Incorporation of economic load dispatch (ELD) with voltages and lineflow constraints significantly relieves the assumptions imposed on the optimized objective function. The proposed approach has been tested on two representative systems, i.e. IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 30 bus systems respectively. Here, the message passing interface based technique is used in the PABC algorithm in a shared memory model. The time complexity and the solution quality with respect to the number of processors in a cluster are thoroughly analyzed.","PeriodicalId":143947,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Power, Signals, Controls and Computation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116276711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Almost 60-65% of revenue expenditure of a distribution company is against power purchase. Cost of power depends on source of power. Hence any optimization strategy involves optimization in scheduling power from various sources. As the scheduling involves many technical and commercial considerations and constraints, the efficiency in scheduling depends on the accuracy of load forecast. Load forecasting is a topic much visited in research world and a number of papers using different techniques are already presented. The accuracy of forecast for the purpose of merit order dispatch decisions depends on the extent of the permissible variation in generation limits. For a system with low load factor, the peak and the off peak trough are prominent and the forecast should be able to identify these points to more accuracy rather than minimizing the error in the energy content. In this paper an attempt is made to apply Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with supervised learning based approach to make short term load forecasting for a power system with comparatively low load factor. Such power systems are usual in tropical areas with concentrated rainy season for a considerable period of the year.","PeriodicalId":143947,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Power, Signals, Controls and Computation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126493380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to growing demand for electrical energy and environmental issues such as pollution and global warming effect, solar energy is considered among one of the best options for generating clean energy. In this paper a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is used as an intelligent method for Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) for a Photo Voltaic (PV) system. Fuzzy logic has been used for tracking the Maximum Power Point of PV systems because it has the advantages of being robust, relatively simple to design and does not require the knowledge of an exact model.","PeriodicalId":143947,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Conference on Power, Signals, Controls and Computation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126932570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is then compared with the FRT capability of existing crow bar controller added to the converters of DFIG. The simulation is carried out using MATLAB/Simulink.
