This paper presents the only system we know of capable of automatically grading free-form diagrammatic answers. Our approach identifies the parts of a diagram that carry specific meaning in that domain, termed minimal meaningful units (MMUs), and matches them with equivalent parts in a model solution. The result of the matching is used to calculate the grade and to generate appropriate feedback. The matching is complicated by errors, omissions, and superfluous items in the student answer. In particular, inheritance hierarchies in diagrams can cause labels in the diagram to be fragmented across several objects. Our approach has been successfully applied to a variety of diagram types and grades diagrams better than a human marker. We briefly describe a set of tools that allow the easy creation of questions, marking schemes, and diagram editors suitable for online assessment and embedding in a VLE quiz engine.","PeriodicalId":143939,"journal":{"name":"2013 Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering","volume":"81 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120841115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the tools used to teach algorithmic thinking and basic programming are oriented visually and hence badly or not at all usable for visually impaired. In this paper we propose a new method to introduce algorithmic thinking using a haptic model (e. g. LEGO plates and bricks) suitable for all students. We evaluated the method in a case study with 5 blind students, teaching them three basic search algorithms: linear search, binary search, and lookup in a binary search tree. It turned out that the haptic method facilitates the understanding of the underlying algorithmic ideas. Moreover it has the advantage to inhibit the common problem of thinking of many steps concurrently, because it forces the students to carry out the steps with their hands consecutively. This also facilitates the transfer from the model to the source code. Our new haptic method is a suitable way to teach visually impaired students basic algorithmic thinking. But furthermore it is also a promising approach for sighted students, because it addresses yet another sense.","PeriodicalId":143939,"journal":{"name":"2013 Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125882209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Years of teaching have demonstrated this topic to be difficult for students to understand. Having made some changes to the methodology used to teach the topic and to the infrastructure used for practice, we have analysed the results and concluded that the research should be more expert-centric than novice-centric. In this turnaround some exam questions have been analysed in order to determine the real learning outcomes achieved.","PeriodicalId":143939,"journal":{"name":"2013 Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering","volume":"230 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121866960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

National results have shown that ratings of disciplines in the physical sciences (Information Technology, Engineering and Science) generally perform poorly on the CTEQs compared to other disciplines. In this paper, a thematic analysis of the students' feedback was undertaken for units in physical science cluster that students experienced as needing critical attention. These units were delivered in semester 2, 2010 at Monash University. The analysis has revealed that the top three concerns for students across the physical science disciplines are lecturer presentation, lecture content and unit organization. These findings are consistent with those from over 35 years ago despite changes in student demographics, advances in learning theory and technological advances used in the delivery of course content.","PeriodicalId":143939,"journal":{"name":"2013 Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering","volume":"19 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125769012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The own experience can be contrasted with theories, models and concepts from the course literature. In this paper, we describe the teaching concept of reflective dialogues. Reflective dialogues aim at fostering the students' involvement by using an interactive visualization and presentation tool called Dialogue Maps. The concept has been applied in a master's program CSCW course. Steps for future development are derived from the results of the first multi-perspective and multimethod evaluations.","PeriodicalId":143939,"journal":{"name":"2013 Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129980258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently it is becoming more and more difficult for teachers to know how their students are going about the learning process. This is of particular concern for the teaching of programming as students typically find this task hard and programming courses often experience high dropout rates. The aim of our research was to explore the study habits of introductory programming students to discover what motivates them to engage in particular activities and use particular resources, and what activities and resources they find valuable for their learning. Twelve introductory programming students were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol. From our study we gained a holistic understanding of the students' journeys in learning programming during their introductory programming course. A key finding was that the classroom experience is no longer central to students' learning. Many students had abandoned textbooks and other teacher-provided resources and are heavily reliant on the internet as source of help and of learning.","PeriodicalId":143939,"journal":{"name":"2013 Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133117054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this course (entitled Enterprise Web Solutions), the focus is put on the design, development, deployment and governance of an enterprise portal as a way to understand the full life cycle of a complex enterprise-level solution. The Bachelor of Science (Information Systems Management) degree program offered at SIS has been designed to contextualise the study of information systems and business management and to acquire practical competencies and skills though learning by doing in real world business settings. Thus, exposing students to complex enterprise level software systems has become a very essential component of the SIS education. However, the preparation of courses based on such software requires a non-trivial amount of background work. Using the Enterprise Web Solutions course and Microsoft Share Point 2010 as an example, this contribution analyses the challenges which arise due to the complexity of the infrastructure requirements, it also describes the difficulties involved in preparing the laboratory exercises and elaborating the project requirements. Finally, several suggestions are offered for those who are designing undergraduate level information systems courses involving enterprise level software packages.","PeriodicalId":143939,"journal":{"name":"2013 Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124460945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although students seem to be quite enthusiastic about learning to program at the beginning of the course, students' enthusiasm quickly dissipated when the practice program becomes too complex for them to bear. To help students learn better, we have implemented a cloud-based cloze programming practicing system. The system allows teacher to upload a program and then block out part of the program that is intended for students to practice. The blocked out code can be as simple as a variable declaration or as complex as a complete function. In the extreme case, the entire program could be blocked out, meaning students have to write the complete program. Therefore, teachers can have students practice a particular aspect of programming by supplying multiple programs and block out the same part of the program for students to fill-in. Students can submit their completed program online and the system will automatically compile and execute the program with pre-assigned input data. Any compiler time error, execution time error, or incorrect output would be reported back to the students for debugging. The on-going teaching experiment has the teachers teach programming as usual, but prepare cloze programming tasks for students to practice. Many such cloze programming exercises of various difficulties have also been developed.","PeriodicalId":143939,"journal":{"name":"2013 Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128629365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A majority of teachers also perceive their pedagogy as non-sufficient for students' learning. The paper unravels two types of instruction at upper secondary school, one which emphasizes individual work with programming languages assisted by a teacher, and one which emphasizes students' experiences of learning concepts. Two types of instruction that corresponds to the existence of two groups of teachers during the 1980s, the defenders who perceived learning as based on repeating sequences in a behavioristic manner, and partisans who perceived learning as based on discovery and self-teaching. The paper suggests that instructional design has remained the same, since the beginning of the 1970s, which could be the rationales for the difficulties in learning and teaching computer programming.","PeriodicalId":143939,"journal":{"name":"2013 Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130215332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To tackle this problem, plagiarism detection tools are especially useful, not only in popular thinking as a deterrent for students, but also as an educational tool to raise students' awareness of the offence and to improve their academic skills. Commercial text matching tools (e.g. Turnitin) are at a high level of maturity. These tools offer the ability to interact with students, making them suitable for an educational objective. Additionally, they can be readily integrated into learning environments enabling uniform application at an institutional level. On the other hand, computer source code matching tools, despite their successful detection performance, are mostly used as standalone tools that are difficult to adopt at an institutional level. The research presented in this paper describes the trial and evaluation of a tool that is seamlessly integrated into the Moodle virtual learning environment. The tool provides code similarity scanning capability within Moodle so that institutions using this learning environment could apply this tool easily at an enterprise level. Additionally, the educational aspects available in text matching tools have been added into the tool capability. The tool relies on two popular code matching services, MOSS and JPlag, as underlying engines to provide good code similarity scanning performance. The evaluation of the tool from both academics' and students' perspectives indicates a considerable level of interest in using the tool, and supports the suitability of this tool for wider institutional adoption in the computing education community.","PeriodicalId":143939,"journal":{"name":"2013 Learning and Teaching in Computing and Engineering","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122871718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
