Mental health is a general trend that aims at preserving an individual’s mental health, their mental functions, as well as to protect them from mental disorders and reduce the rate of occurrence, to attain a healthy personality. To achieve the objectives of the study, the Arabic Scale of Mental Health, developed by Abdel-Khalek (2016) was administered to a sample that consisted of 249 students at Beirut Arab University, from various disciplines, of which there were 114 males and 145 females, of age ranging from 18 to 21. It is worth noting that the scale has been used in a large number of studies in different countries of the Arab World, and demonstrates good psychometric characteristics in Egyptian, Kuwaiti and Lebanese samples. In this study, the reliability coefficient was calculated using a sample of students (n=100), and the coefficient was 0.89, while the alpha coefficient was 0.96. Means and SD were used, as well as t-test to calculate the differences between means in the interpretation of the results. The findings of the study showed that there are no significant differences in mental health between male and female university students. The findings of the study were interpreted in the light of previous studies and the social circumstances of the sample in Lebanon.","PeriodicalId":143734,"journal":{"name":"BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129127636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the two worlds appear disparate, fiction and reality are linked together in more ways than thought. A literary text opens up a means to access reality; often it is a reflection of a reality we claim to exist. This paper, thus, explores how selected contemporary historical novels creatively (re-) construct alternative realities of WWII events as opposed to an assumed fixed reality presented in the grand narratives of history. The novels seek to retrieve the mini-narratives of long lost, subdued and/or marginalized stories of minor participants in those events that constitute the grand narratives of history. As such, these novels become the voice of the silenced, and discursively/collectively establish a subgenre that acts as a tool of (narrative/fictional) empowerment.","PeriodicalId":143734,"journal":{"name":"BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125455173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is therefore not surprising that African writers, who are mainly inspired by the world around them, revisit History to write their novels. Among them, the Guinean writer Tierno Monénembo. The writer sheds the light on the history that has painfully shaken his continent, West Africa more precisely. His novels translate the almost obsessive concern to narrate the story of the African continent. We propose to study two of his novels: The king of Kahel (2008) and The black terrorist (2012). In these novels, the author offers a different reading of colonial memory, moving away from the long-standing Manichaeism between white and black. Through the romanticized biography of Viscount Sanderval driven by a sincere desire to \"civilize\" the negroes but at the same time to \"conquer a kingdom\" in the region of Fouta-Djalon-, or that of Addi Bâ, a young Senegalese gunner who will enter, during the Second World War, in France, the reader is invited to dive into a troubled past and discover all the complexity of Franco-African politics. Our purpose is to show the way History fits in the novels of Monénembo, by studying literary devices in the novels as well as the representation of two historical figures: Sanderval and Addi Bâ.","PeriodicalId":143734,"journal":{"name":"BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122270492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
