To this end, this study selected dimensions and indicators of employment quality considering the characteristics of social workers based on the multidimensional employment quality evaluation framework of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). In addition, using the 2020 Korea Working Conditions Survey (KWCS) data, 426 social workers were selected as study subjects and multiple regression analysis was conducted. The analysis results are as follows. First, it was found that the safety and ethics of employment, wages and welfare benefits, employment stability and social security, employment-related relationships, and work motivation had an effect on the mental health of social workers. Second, it was found that the safety and ethics of employment, working hours, and work-life balance had an effect on social workers' subjective health. Third, social dialogue, skill development, and training appeared to be the dimensions that did not affect both mental health and self-rated health of social workers. Based on the above analysis results, this study proposed policy proposals and follow-up studies for social workers' health promotions.","PeriodicalId":143688,"journal":{"name":"Korean Association of Health and Medical Sociology","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122098370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, in order to investigate the performance differences resulting from profit orientation in healthcare institutions, it is necessary to examine the relationship between the organization's profit orientation and the job attitudes of its employees. This study assumes that the profit orientation of the institution where healthcare workers are employed affects their perceived job characteristics, which in turn affects their level of job involvement. To investigate this hypothesis, data from the International Social Survey Programme conducted in 38 countries in 2015 on the topic of work orientation were used. A total of 1,007 healthcare workers from 35 countries were included in the analysis. Independent sample t-tests revealed differences in perceived job characteristics between respondents based on the profit orientation of their workplace, and among job involvement variables, pride in job was higher among non-profit institution employees. Regression analysis showed that the job characteristic that had the greatest impact on job 88 involvement variables was interest in the job, and that social contribution and subjective income level influenced pride in work, while job autonomy had a positive effect on turnover intention. These findings reaffirm that healthcare workers are motivated by intrinsic rewards due to their professional ethics, implying that the job attitudes and performance of nonprofit hospitals may be better than those of for-profit hospitals.","PeriodicalId":143688,"journal":{"name":"Korean Association of Health and Medical Sociology","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124700838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 5,000 service employers who were working at least 1 hour a day from a nationwide sample were analyzed. A 11-items of Korean Emotional Labor Scale (K-ELS@11) was used for the evaluation of the exposures to emotional labor. It consists of 4 sub-factors: ‘emotional regulation’ (2 items), ‘emotional dissonance’ (3 items)’, ‘organizational monitoring’ (2 items), and ‘organizational protective system for emotional labor’ (4 items). Depressive symptom for the past 1 year was measured using a dichotomous variable (‘Yes’ vs. ‘No’) through a self-reported questionnaire. The multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted after controlling for socio-demographic and job characteristics. The results show that four sub-factors of emotional labor were positively related to depressive symptom (emotional regulation, OR: 1.389, 95% CI: 1.209-1.596; emotional dissonance, OR: 2.481, 95%CI: 2.107-2.922; organizational monitoring, OR: 1.623, 95% CI: 1.416-1.861; organizational protective system for emotional labor, OR: 1.414, 95% CI: 1.230-1.625) after adjustment for sociodemographics(sex, age, education, monthly income, and marital status) and job characteristics(working duration, weekly working hours, type of employment, job types, and shift work). These results indicate that service workers’ emotional labor during performing their duties might contribute to develop depressive symptom.","PeriodicalId":143688,"journal":{"name":"Korean Association of Health and Medical Sociology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128755566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While previous studies has confirmed the positive implications of volunteering to perceived loneliness, they tended to focus on the old who has retired or widowed. But the literature indicates that people suffer from loneliness all over the life courses and so the study that cover those who are young as well as old is necessary. Using the data from a nationwide sample of 5,000 adults, this research examines the relationship between volunteering and loneliness in Korea. We find that volunteering is negatively associated with sense of loneliness for Koreans. In particular, participations in preservation of environment and supports of the social weak has strong positive implications. These findings recommend volunteering as a good cure of loneliness.","PeriodicalId":143688,"journal":{"name":"Korean Association of Health and Medical Sociology","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121674450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study examines their motivations for obtaining dual licenses, their study and work experiences, and their relationships with fellow students and physicians. The objective of the study is to gain insight into how dual license holders establish their identities in the South Korean medical system, which is strictly divided into modern and traditional sectors. To achieve this objective, a qualitative interview survey was conducted with six multiple licensees of medical doctors and KM doctors. The data indicate that interview participants were interested in obtaining multiple licenses either before, immediately after, or long after completing their first medical schools. During the process of acquiring multiple licenses, respondents recognized differences between biomedicine and traditional Korean medicine, and encountered conflicts between medical doctors and KM doctors in their learning process and relationships with their professors and fellow physicians. In this process, it can be observed that dual license holders are often required to choose between their Western medical identity and their KM identity, in situations where conflicts arise between Western medical doctors and KM doctors. Consequently, they may face challenges in fully utilizing their medical skills within the South Korean healthcare system. Unlike previous studies that relied on quantitative analysis, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of how the lives and experiences of medical holders of both medical doctor and KM doctor licenses are linked to the characteristics of the Korean medical system, from the perspective of medical pluralism.","PeriodicalId":143688,"journal":{"name":"Korean Association of Health and Medical Sociology","volume":"64 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120932969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study also identified individual and environmental factors contributing to the development of each type. The sample was 1237 mothers who participated in the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study. Using latent class growth modeling, results identified three class trajectories with their unique timing and course of health status: high-stable, high-decrease, and low-stable. Also, the multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that each class membership was conditional to different individual and environmental factors, including age, self-esteem, household economic status, social network, and residential area. These findings suggest the importance of specific and targeted programs and policies promoting married immigrant women's health.","PeriodicalId":143688,"journal":{"name":"Korean Association of Health and Medical Sociology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116110593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to examine the association between emotional labor and burnout in firefighters. A total of 18,075 Korean firefighters who were performing the duties of firefighting, rescue and emergency medical aid were analyzed. Data were obtained from the FRESH (Firefighter Research: Enhancement of Safety and Health) Study, and a structured self-administered questionnaire by using the online survey was performed. Emotional labor was measured using the five sub-scales of K_ELS®24, and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was used for the measurement of burnout. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationships of emotional labor to burnout. All statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS/PC (ver. 23), and p<0.05 was considered significant. In the results of multiple regression analyses, five sub-scales of emotional labor (‘emotional demand & regulation’, b=0.133, F=510.223, p<0.001; ‘overload & conflict in customer service’, b=0.111, F=529,442, p<0.001; ‘emotional disharmony & hurt’, b=0.149, F=733.982, p<0.001; ‘organizational surveillance & monitoring’ b=0.130, F=564.316, p<0.001; ‘lack of a supportive & protective system’, b=0.111, F=510.223, p<0.001) were positively associated with firefighters’ burnout after adjustment for sex, age, marital status, educational background, smoking status, subjective health status, main duty and shift work. The results indicate that emotional labor contributes to increase the risk of firefighters' burnout. These results emphasize the importance of stress management program to reduce or alleviate the negative outcomes caused by emotional labor at organizational level, and coping strategies to reinforce the personal potentiality suitable to organizational norms and work settings at individual level.","PeriodicalId":143688,"journal":{"name":"Korean Association of Health and Medical Sociology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129550698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of the study was to empirically analyze how variables such as religion, spiritual and religious attitudes toward illness, perceived changes, and the meaning in life affect the well-being of people who tested positive for COVID-19, and to determine the degree of influence of each factor. This study sought to draw academic and practical implications by finding positive factors that can help improve people’s psychological well-being. In this study, a total of 295 copies of data were collected through an online questionnaire targeting those who tested positive for COVID-19, and hierarchical regression analysis was performed using IBM SPSS 21.0 program. The main results are as follows. The degree of influence of factors affecting WHO-5 well-being appeared in the order of ‘existence’ in meaning in life (MLQ), subjective health, corona stress, ‘worrying reflections and loneliness’ in perceived changes (PCQ-K). Based on the research results, the significance and limitations of the research were discussed, and suggestions for subsequent study were provided.","PeriodicalId":143688,"journal":{"name":"Korean Association of Health and Medical Sociology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129226217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we analyze the infectious disease response capabilities of 44 ODA partner countries for SPAR and JEE, and based on this, we intend to provide guidelines necessary for developing programs to strengthen the required infectious disease response capabilities. JEE and SPAR are used as useful data to evaluate and compare health security capabilities by country. It is academically meaningful to analyze how properly the evaluation results of JEE and SPAR as health security indicators are actually reflected in COVID-19 quarantine. The data used here was analyzed by linking JEE and SPAR data with Our World in Data, which can be seen as a result of COVID-19 response capabilities. As a result of this study, comparing JEE and SPAR evaluation results, the two evaluations appeared to be equally vulnerable areas in pharmaceutical support, health and medical personnel deployment, and public health crisis preparation, and as a result, there was no significant difference in the two evaluation tools. As a result of the regression analysis, all evaluation indicators of SPAR and JEE were compared and analyzed with the response effect of Corona 19, and no statistically significant results were obtained. Even as a result of analyzing the combined JEE and SPAR scores, there are many countries with very good evaluation scores even though the loss of life and economic loss due to Corona 19 is very serious. Whether these contradictory results are JEE or SPAR evaluation indexes or evaluation systems needs to be proven through future studies. Even countries with excellent health security capabilities in JEE or SPAR may have problems with reliability of overall infectious disease-related data if they are passive in disclosing information on outbreaks of infectious diseases to the outside. In the future, Korea's health ODA project will be an opportunity to increase effectiveness when JEE & SPAR reports with well-managed quality are used to overcome data reliability issues.","PeriodicalId":143688,"journal":{"name":"Korean Association of Health and Medical Sociology","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130451327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the Rest and Health of Korean Society Survey, this study examines the association between rest alone, the most common method of rest, and depressive symptoms, and test the buffering effects of perceived social support and voluntary rest alone by generation. Results show that young adults who were voluntarily resting alone were more depressed than those who are resting with others, while the middle-aged and older adults who are involuntarily resting alone were more depressed than those resting with others. The moderating effect of perceived social support was confirmed only among young adults, in particular among those who involuntarily rest alone. Although resting alone is the most common and preferred method, negative effects are inevitable because of differences in the lack of resources across age groups. In addition, strong positive association between voluntary rest alone and depressive symptom among young adults also lead to speculate that young adults are more suffering from social exclusion than other age groups and thus use voluntary rest alone as their coping strategies.","PeriodicalId":143688,"journal":{"name":"Korean Association of Health and Medical Sociology","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126083585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
