A theoretical model is developed to predict signal loss due to vegetation. The model considers path segments of different vegetation densities where the density measurements are available from satellite data. Signal loss over the entire propagation path is calculated by predicting and combining losses over individual segments. The model predicts vegetation loss factor (VLF) over each segment and then calculates the overall VLF of a path traversing multiple segments. The model has been validated against field data. Further modification of the model to include the effects of other environmental factors and different signal frequencies is under way.","PeriodicalId":143262,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116090904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Failure protection in connection-oriented networks can be realized using local protection schemes, such as fast reroute (FRR), or using end-to-end protection schemes, like redundant trees. In this paper we study the trade-offs between local and end-to-end protection schemes from several key aspects such as protection availability, management complexity and in particular the resource reservation efficiency of the two approaches.","PeriodicalId":143262,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129913014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we study the use of minimum number of wireless charging mobile vehicles to charge sensors in a sensor network so that none of the sensors runs out of its energy, subject to the energy capacity imposed on mobile vehicles, for which we first advocate an flexible on-demand wireless charging paradigm that decouples sensor energy charging scheduling from data routing protocols design. We then formulate an optimization problem of scheduling mobile vehicles to charge lifetime-critical sensors with an objective to minimize the number of mobile vehicles deployed, subject to the energy capacity constraint on each mobile vehicle. As the problem is NP-hard, we devise an approximation algorithm with a provable performance guarantee for it. We finally evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm through experimental simulations. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is promising, and the solution obtained is fractional of the optimal.","PeriodicalId":143262,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127959953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this environment, users face the problem of heterogeneous and fluctuating network conditions. A promising solution to this issue is the scalable video coding (SVC). It allows an adaptation of the video stream to the available bandwidth, but requires a reliable bandwidth estimation. Adaptation times for conversational video at fluctuating network conditions are critical, and a fast strategy for bandwidth estimation is needed to avoid congestion. In this work, we analyse the capabilities of the sender and the receiver to adapt the video coding to changing network conditions. We derive an early congestion indicator at the sender side based on the jitter variation. For receivers, we use sustained goodput to extract a feasible scaling. In thorough evaluations that include real-world 3G networks, we reveal a faster congestion detection at the sender that are also more robust but less accurate than probing at the receiver.","PeriodicalId":143262,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129575587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Practical problems arise when applying network coding in traditional wired networks: multipath multicast routing, backward compatibility with deployed base, and adding new functions in commercial routers. SDN network naturally solves these problems via logically centralized control plane and open APIs of Openflow switches. This paper proposes NCoS, a framework for realizing network coding over SDN networks. It gives a brief introduction on how to extend Openflow protocol to include new actions, and add network coding related functions in controller and switches.","PeriodicalId":143262,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130293238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Approaches to ICN employ caches in the network to eliminate the transfer of information over lengthy communication paths from a source to consumers. The contribution of this paper lies in the placement of copies in on-path in-network caching. Our goal is to investigate the suitability of a probabilistic algorithm, Prob-PD, based on two variables, the content's popularity rates and the distance ratio of each node from the source, with regard to caching performance, i.e. cache hit rates, cache replacement rates and content delivery times. Towards this goal, we present an initial comparison of simulation results of the proposed caching mechanism and published alternatives showing significant gains of the algorithm.","PeriodicalId":143262,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130380553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve this goal, most of the existing schemes try to select the optimal next forwarder through a distributed contention phase. This latter adds few units of delay at each hop which is substantial in case of multihop transmission. A more pragmatic approach is to build a stable virtual infrastructure, ahead of time, which will be in charge of relaying messages. In this regard, this paper presents the Minimum Stable CDS-based Virtual Backbone, labeled CDS-SVB, which guarantees fast and efficient broadcasting. It selects vehicles with identical velocities to assure stability as well as low dissemination delay, and it deploys acknowledgments to ensure reliability. Simulation results show that CDS-SVB outperforms DBA-MAC in terms of dissemination delay, backbone's lifetime, and packets delivery ratio.","PeriodicalId":143262,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"1 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114124104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various caching schemes have been proposed to overcome some drawbacks of the universal caching strategy but they come with additional complexity and overheads. Besides those sophisticated caching schemes, there is a probabilistic caching scheme that is more efficient than the universal caching strategy and adds a modest complexity to a network. The probabilistic caching scheme was treated as a benchmark and the insights into its behavior have never been studied despite its promising performance and feasibility in practical use. In this paper we study the probabilistic caching scheme by means of computer simulation to explore the behavior of the probabilistic caching scheme when it works with various cache replacement policies. The simulation results show the different behavioral characteristics of the probabilistic caching scheme as a function of the cache replacement policy.","PeriodicalId":143262,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127833138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Complex 3D shapes and surfaces make geometric coordinate based techniques inefficient or impractical for 3D. Geo-Logical Routing (GLR) switches between virtual and topology coordinate domains to overcome the local minima of each other. GLR is demonstrated to be highly effective for complex 3D networks. Addition of a second initial anchor pair in Extreme Node Search (ENS) increases the number of anchors, thus enhancing performance in networks with very high node degree, while traditional 2D ENS performs just as well in other cases. Simulations demonstrate that GLR with ENS anchor placement significantly outperforms the Greedy Distributed Spanning Tree Routing (3D-GDSTR) algorithm, but without the need for localization.","PeriodicalId":143262,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129883450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most proposed solutions are based on sequential estimation. However, in this paper we present a new solution to the trajectory estimation problem using the batch estimation approach. In our solution, we model the problem as a system of equations AX = b, with matrix A being sparse and vector X being the trajectory. Next, through multifrontal QR factorization, factorization A = QR is distributed between the sensors, which calculate it collaboratively and incrementally. Simulation results show that our solution has the same performance as the centralized estimator. Also, we demonstrate its implementation viability by showing that the processing and memory requirements are compatible to generic motes characteristics.","PeriodicalId":143262,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116951707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
