An outline analysis is given of the key theoretical issues, such as oscillation and starting conditions, and how the output power scales with frequency. Two techniques for the realisation of the cavity assembly are outlined. The preferred method results in a free-standing gold re-entrant cavity of high surface quality. Collimated THz beams are observed from surface-field THz emitters and three methods of improving the efficiency of these emitters are demonstrated: (i) by applying a magnetic field, (ii) by reducing the effective refractive index of the device and (iii) by altering the geometry of the device. Without readjusting the mirrors, smooth tuning of the terahertz-wave over the 0.6/spl sim/2.6 THz range was obtained by adjusting the seeder wavelength alone.
