High DC-photocurrents have been achieved with interdigitated structures and transmission lines have been used to improve matching between antenna and photomixer. Collimated THz beams are observed from surface-field THz emitters and three methods of improving the efficiency of these emitters are demonstrated: (i) by applying a magnetic field, (ii) by reducing the effective refractive index of the device and (iii) by altering the geometry of the device. Without readjusting the mirrors, smooth tuning of the terahertz-wave over the 0.6/spl sim/2.6 THz range was obtained by adjusting the seeder wavelength alone.
