Recently, the value of the Amsadong site has been newly recognized and used as a socio-cultural resource, and preparations for the nomination of World Heritage based on the value and significance of the site. \u0000According to research on the Amsadong site, it would be the earliest Neolithic site in the Midwest of the Korean Peninsula, and is a representative site of the Korean Peninsula that shows Neolithic culture that emerged in the process of adapting to a new climate in Holocene. In particular, the pottery culture, which is represented by comb-patterned pottery excavated from the Amsadong Site, is a archaeological evidence that proves the universality of East Asian earthenware culture that changes into a new decoration technique and the process of differentially occurring, changing, developing, and spreading of comb-patterned pottery culture in the Korean Peninsula. In the early study of comb-pattern pottery culture, there was also a study of the diffusionism with Eurasian earthenware culture, but this is time to be reviewed through expanded research through multi-layered space setting including the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia. \u0000Comparing the value of Amsadong Site with criteria i)-vi), the nomination criteria of iii) and iv) can be met in consideration of differentiated pottery culture, new substance for adaptation to the changing environment, and the formation of settlement villages. However, in order to strategically promote the nomination as a World Heritage Site, it will be necessary to review the development of Neolithic pottires and comb-pattern pottery culture based on a wider space range, including the Korean Peninsula. In particular, for the serial nomination of World Heritage, it is necessary to review the outstanding and universal value through a review of Neolithic sites in the Midwest of the Korean Peninsula. \u0000The nomination of World Heritage is an effective way to protect and promote the value of the value of Amsadong Site, and we look forward to continuous efforts for World Heritage sites.

Throughout the Neolithic period, people occupied islands and coastal regions, creating hundreds of shellmiddens. Since subsistence studies mainly relied on shellmiddens where faunal remains are preserved well, when it comes to the coastal and island settings, Neolithic subsistence practice has been regarded as the ‘maritime hunting-gathering-fishing’. This study tries to obtain new evidence related to prehistoric foodstuffs by directly analyzing potsherds collected from well-known Neolithic coastal and island sites located in the Southern part of the Korean Peninsula with the application of compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA). Our result revealed that the subsistence were more dynamic and varied than is posited by models focused on marine resources.

I examined their shapes and excavation contexts and attempted to reveal their changes. Portable rod-shaped stones corresponding to the wide-mouthed pottery group are characterized by a planar shape surface that is rod-shaped and a cross-section shape that is round or rectangular. They are often found in mountainous sites, tombs, and shell mounds. Portable stones corresponding to the round-bottomed pottery group show an increase in quantity compared to stones corresponding to the wide-mouthed pottery group, and a change in which flat stones with rectangular cross-sections appear. There is also a change in which the proportion of stones excavated from residential sites increases. This reflects the major trends of social change in the Korean Neolithic period, and it can also be seen that the direction of change is closer to that of Bronze Age stones. \u0000On the other hand, by focusing on stones excavated from tombs and mountainous sites, I clarified through analysis of corresponding axes that these stones were attributed to the wide-mouthed pottery period. I also suggested that rod-shaped stones and stone axes may have been a set of ritual tools. Although limited to the wide-mouthed pottery group, it is significant that I were able to restore one aspect of ritual behavior in the Korean Neolithic period through portable rod-shaped stones.

I offer my most sincere condolences on behalf of all members of the Korean Archaeological Society. \u0000Our first encounter was made at the sandy fields of the prehistoric site at Amsa-dong. Back in 1970, a student working on her doctoral degree at University of Michigan was performing an 1-year on-site survey at the sandy beach near Han-River trying to collect data for her research on Neolithic Culture. \u0000Right there, our first encounter was made. During those days I was also conducting survey near the sites in Han-River for 1 year funded by Ministry of Education. She seemed like she was also delighted by this unexpected encounter. We gladly agreed some of the collected data from survey to be jointly published. Since then daily survey and data analysis continued and the combined result was published in Journal of Korean Archaeological society under the title, 「Implications of the Sizes of Comb-pattern Vessels in Han River Sites in Korea」. \u0000In 1973, after receiving her doctoral degree with her thesis 「Chulmun Period Villages on the Han River in Korea, Subsistence and Settlement」, she started her academic career as a tenure tarck faculty at University of Denver in the state of Colorado. Her published thesis drew attention in relation to whether the theory and methodology of L. Binford on New Archaeology can be applied in regions other than the United States. Back in those days many of archaeological interpretation relied on “diffusion” and those chronology focused research were recognized as main stream archaeology. In 1962, Binford emphasized the irrationalism of the previous researches in his paper 「Archaeology as Anthropology」 and released a new theory stating that understanding social aspect is also possible through the study of material culture. The research of professor Nelson on the basin of Han-River caught more attention, for it became the first research on Korean Peninsula to be performed within the framework of New Archaeology. \u0000Even after that, professor Nelson published the total of 9 books and up to 150 articles on the archaeology of North-Eastern China and Neolithic Korea, establishing her fame as the leader of this field. \u0000Of her publications, 『The Archaeology of Korea』 (1993)became the foundation for understanding Korean archaeology. In 『Gender in Archaeology: Analyzing Power and Prestige』 she exposed her thoughts on how the matriarchal society in Neolith age transformed into patriarchal society in modern days. \u0000Back in 1996 at Honolulu, she witnessed an overwhelming moment of the separation of Korean Archaeology from being part of those of China and Japan. In recent years, pXRF has been applied increasingly to archaeological ceramics as a tool to classify ceramics based on their geochemical composition in order to analyze technological choices in ceramic production which may be used to infer differences in production and disposal location as well as aspects of exchange. Experimental analyses of Neolithic pottery from the Central Region of Korea suggests that the majority of pottery excavated from settlement sites were likely produced from clay materials acquired nearby the sites. Pottery excavated from Central-west coast shell middens (Oido shell middens) show greater variation in geochemical composition than settlement sites, which may suggest that they were produced using a wider range of materials originating in different parts of the region. However, experimental analysis also highlight the limits of using pXRF, namely its inability to identify the geographical provenance of heterogeneous materials. It is proposed that pXRF can be used to approach some research questions that are strongly based in archaeological data. Furthermore, it is suggested that pXRF may be used as a method that is complementary to other archaeological science approaches, but greater effort must be made to collect a wider range of samples directly from archaeological sites.

Feasts are a strategic behavior performed for the main purpose of confirming the identity of groups and securing solidarity, acquiring, maintaining, and strengthening socio-political power by hosts who held those feasts. Essential parts of the feasts are the hospitality, and among others alcoholic beverage is an indispensable drink in the feasts. In this paper, after reviewing in detail the cases in China where the existence of alcohol was confirmed through archaeo-scientific analysis, theoretical discussions on rituals and feasts and critical review of ritual-related studies in Korea were conducted. After that, I briefly reviewed the archaeological data that can be interpreted in relation to the feasts in Korean prehistoric archeology. Through this, it was pointed out that archaeological confirmation and interpretation of various rituals and feasts, such as rites of passage and labor mobilization festivals, and overcoming the research tendency that was biased towards the study of funeral rites, are essential for a holistic understanding of prehistoric society.

Most previous studies on subsistence patterns have focused on the quantitative analysis of floral and fauna remains preserved in the shell middens. In contrast to traditional methods such as quantitative analysis of floral and fauna remains, stable isotope analysis provides a direct measurement of past human diets. This method provides information about whether individuals derived the protein in their diet from plant or animal sources. \u0000Until now, stable isotopic results of humans from Neolithic period (Ando, Janghang, Daepo, Tongsamdong humans) revealed that the Neolithic people were mainly dependent on marine food resources as hunter-gatherers. Based on the stable isotope data, we can propose that marine resource exploitation was the main subsistence strategy in the Neolithic period. However, there is also a regional difference in stable isotope values between west (Konamri human) and east-south coast. This indicates that there might be a possibility to have regional difference in subsistence strategies during Neolithic period.

From this perspective, this study examined Neolithic burial remains in the Maritime Territory(Primorsky Kray), Sanjiang Plain (Lake Xingkai; Khanka), and the east coast area of the Korean Peninsula, and then inferred social aspects for each site and region. \u0000First, it is estimated that in the remains of Maritime Territory and the Lake Xingkai basin, an afterlife worldview that was more faithful to human or group norms than nature was established, whereas, in the Korean Peninsula, a notion that valued nature, especially the sea, was formed. In addition, the burial remains generally fulfilled functions such as marking territory, creating a sanctuary, and maintaining the unity and identity of the community, but it is considered that in the northeastern region, they were focused on remembrance and worship for ancestors, whereas in the Korean peninsula, an emphasis was put on worship for or praying for good luck to the living base (the sea). It is likely that each group had evolved a similar but different aspect depending on the situation and adaptation process they were in. \u0000Next, in the society at that time, it seems that roles were divided between men and women or between members, and a group or community was led by a person or people who had the upper hand in a specific ability or blood relationship, in a relatively equal structure without a hierarchy. \u0000Finally, the burial remains from the early phase to the first phase in the Neolithic period in Far East Asia adjacent to the East Sea are judged to be the outcome of the acceptance and change of the burial customs of the previous period according to the circumstances of each group, with the establishment of the tradition of Northeast Asian flat-bottomed pottery with pressed patterns and raised patterns.

But, even on Tsushima Island(対馬島), which had the most contact with the Korean Peninsula, the clear relationship couldn't pointed out. In the Jomon period, there were few exchanges related to spiritual sphere between Korea and Japan, so it is thought that the influence on the burials was small. However, it is necessary to continue to review the problem of stone covered burials(覆石葬) and shell bracelets. The Kogawashima (小川島) Shell midden Tomb No. 4 appears to have the pottery of the latest phase of Korean Neolithic, but it is assumed to be related to Tsushima Island. It is also possible to point out the possibility that pottery of the Korean Peninsula may have had a symbolic meaning to those traveling to and from the Islands around the Genkainada(玄界灘).
