Due to infrastructural limitations such as inadequate number of trainers, availability of training programmes, distance to the training centre, face-toface trainings are often difficult to avail. The authors investigate the level of acceptance of OLTE among the secondary level language teachers in Bangladesh. In this study 40 English language teachers and 10 teacher educators participated and responded to a questionnaire and a follow-up interview. The findings suggest that the English language teachers face problems in traditional training system due to location, schedule conflict, time limitation, and lack of ongoing support. OLTE rather helps them attend trainings overcoming the location and time constraints.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130352491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study attempts to analyze the Bangladeshi context of EAP, specifically for the students majoring in Arts, Humanities, and Legal Studies. The instruments used included questionnaire for students (n=100) of tertiary level; interviews with teachers (n=10) of two universities (one public and one private) of Chattogram. The study provides an overview of some important issues pertaining to EAP needs analysis in English as Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) contexts. This research provides insights for language policy makers and the practitioners to increase the effectiveness of EAP courses at the tertiary level by through needs analysis.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128195183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Study of Interactions in the Affirmative Space","authors":"Uma Maheshwari Chimirala","doi":"10.36832/beltaj.2018.0201.03","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36832/beltaj.2018.0201.03","url":null,"abstract":"Affirmative Actions (AA) in education are presumed to be interventions that enable access to educational spaces and by extension to quality learning opportunities. The assumption is that these programs would build capabilities that affirm their identities while providing equal opportunities to socio-economic growth and thus, again by extension enable agency. But is that what they do? We begin by placing agency as the terminal goal of AA. We then situate our study within a ̳Third space‘ framework to examine the interactional space in an AA – A space of asymmetrical power and advantage inhabited by the implementer of the AA and a participant in an AA intervention. Therefore the question we ask in this study is: how are structures of dominance produced? Based on the analysis of the interactions we find several power-inflected controls that impact the actors of AA. This paper reports three sets of language use patterns and three modes of establishing dominance, all of which work in tandem to annihilate any possibility of nurturing the capability to act and voice oneself. Based on our study we propose that if AA has to materialize into affirming agency then the possibility of contestation and mediation needs to be built into the AA program. How and what changes need to be brought in to humanize each of the stakeholders is the billion dollar question.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130796495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Task complexity was varied on one dimension: presence (absence) of the pre-tasks. The results showed that when pre-tasks were administered to students (15 M. It is, therefore argued that writing tasks in classroom should be preceded by pre-tasks which help with organization and content.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134211755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A theoretical discussion followed by a classification of different types of FonF strategies is then presented. The data are drawn from an ethnographic study on a group of students in a private university in Bangladesh. The analysis of the data shows that the interpretation and realisation of university spaces of these students are relational and relative. These spaces are the site of exhilaration and excitement, on the one hand, and constant struggle, and resistance, on the other. They carry students’ enthusiasm of being part of the newer Western education movement in Bangladesh; they bear with their dreams, desires, and aspirations, not to mention, their conflicts and contradictions and struggles and anguishes; these are also the spaces where they engage in subversive activities and perform alternative identities. These spaces, with students’ individual and collective realisation, transform students while they are transformed too in the process. The paper concludes that the pro-English hi-tech university gives rise to alternative realities for students and these realities need to be understood critically and sympathetically.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114244591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It not only contains lessons, activities or tasks, but also contains ideology of a country through its language, content or discourse. Therefore, during designing or developing a textbook it requires a balance in the content and the context and needs to be equal in terms of gender, class, religion and profession. However, there are inequalities, biases, stereotyping, under-representation or misrepresentation of social classes, ages, races, religions, gender and professions in ELT books of different contexts. This research reveals the unequal representation of social classes in the textbook English for Today (EFT). The content of EFT is predominantly upper and middle class centric. The textbook excludes lower classes from the content. The EFT provides discriminatory depiction as well and thus reinforces social hegemony. Using Fairclough‘s (1995) three dimensional model of analysis— description, interpretation and explanation— this study critically analyzes the contexts and images of EFT, for class VIII, and unfolds the unequal representation of social classes in EFT.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127023507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
