While other books favor either a qual itative or quantitative approach to second language acquisition (SLA) research, this text is comprehensive in scope and does not privilege one approach over the other, illuminating the strengths of each and the ways in which they might com plement each other. Part I will help novice researchers consider the best approach to use for answering their research questions. It will also help more experienced researchers expand their repertoire in terms of approaches and help them con sider both cognitive and social aspects of L2 writing. Part II will prove useful for both novice and experienced researchers when they are faced with choices regarding data collection and analysis. Containing an array of focal studies and suggestions for further reading, this text is the ideal resource for students begin ning to conduct L2 writing research as well as for more experienced researchers who wish to expand their approach to conducting research.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130780239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research shows that technology provides numerous benefits when professional development activities are teacher-initiated. However, research on Bangladeshi teachers' self-initiated tech-based professional development seems limited. This small-scale study investigated the initiatives undertaken by the higher education English teachers in Bangladesh and how engaging in such activities contributed to their professional development. Following a qualitative design, the study used semi-structured interview with eight English teachers working in different public and private universities in Bangladesh. A thematic analysis of the data revealed that teachers undertook initiatives including connecting with teaching associations, navigating online resources, attending MOOCs, and blogging which resulted in increased confidence, augmented digital skills, and an awareness of the pedagogical use of technology. The study drew several implications for teacher-initiated technology-mediated professional development.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124856389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though the technology used for online education has hardly been explored to such a massive extent earlier, stakeholders soon self-educated themselves in new technological skills. However, challenges became more complex when the issues of assessment arose. Maintaining the validity, reliability, fairness, and academic integrity in online-based assessment became an insurmountable task; again, there was a pressing need for endorsing resilience and empathy for the assessors and assesses, especially for those who faced discrimination due to COVID-19. This study draws on the findings of a nationwide survey of online programmes offered by Bangladeshi private universities during the late 2020. They reveal the locally adopted methods and supports for assessing learners online, identify several challenges of online assessment, including the use of assessment methods, inadequate assessment-related support, fairness, and reliability, and ensuring accessibility to the assesses. It also reveals the stakeholders' choices to deal with the challenges in assessment, including flexibility, designing questions, and adopting process approach among others. Resilience and empathy for the stakeholders towards each other were required to successfully deal with the challenges of an online assessment.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"208 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134019213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

English movie-watching activities seem to be rising in popularity in Bangladesh as a valuable tool for learning a language. The present study was designed to investigate the perceptions of Bangladeshi students and teachers towards the integration of English movies to enhance students' English language skills in their English language classes. To this end, two research questions were posed, and a qualitative approach was adopted. The study involved fifteen students and three English language teachers from three private universities in Bangladesh. The analysis of the data showed that movie-watching activities were perceived as inspirational and motivational activities for both students and teachers, which reportedly helped the students enhance their micro and macro skills in the English language. The findings also indicated that movies were seen as useful resources for designing effective multi-dimensional pedagogical tasks in EFL classrooms. However, the study recommended that more logistic facilities and training may help English language teachers design effective movie-watching activities.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123786440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Theoretical Framework","authors":"Charlie Taylor","doi":"10.36832/beltaj.2022.0601.01","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36832/beltaj.2022.0601.01","url":null,"abstract":"Few topics in SLA are as contentious as grammar teaching. Differences in opinion persist about whether, what, and when grammar should be taught explicitly. While most SLA researchers now agree that acquisition is primarily a subconscious process, there is a good deal of empirical evidence suggesting that it can be accelerated through explicit teaching, provided forms are presented in a way that respects the natural order of acquisition. Among proponents of explicit instruction, few believe it is feasible or desirable to teach all forms, but there is great disagreement regarding which forms should be taught. This advice provides little practical direction for practitioners and policymakers wondering whether and when to teach a particular form explicitly in their classrooms. This article proposes a framework for a tool called the Implicit/Explicit Knowledge Axis which could be developed to provide critical guidance on the matter.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133693809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ELT has become a worldwide profession, and its focuses are shifting over time. The emerging trends include the use of postmethod orientations, greater role of digital technologies, critical pedagogy, development of learners' intercultural communicative competences, teachers' continuing professional development, localisation of ELT, development of learners' autonomy and their sense of social responsibility and well-being, and increased use of formative assessments. ELT in Bangladesh cannot ignore all these emerging trends in global ELT. This paper, consequently, discusses the implications of these emerging trends for ELT in Bangladesh. It strongly argues that all the ELT stakeholders in Bangladesh must play a planned and active role in reflecting these trends in their practices.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114882066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A nationwide online education had been in effect in Bangladesh since March 2020 due to the closing down of schools for an indefinite period. While several studies have explored the effects of such a sudden shift in the learning environment for the older students, the primary level students have not received as much attention. The present study examined the changes adopted, with regard to classroom teaching and assessments, in the English language classes at the primary levels in Bangladesh. A qualitative study was conducted with a pool of teachers (n= 7), students (n= 10), and parents (n=9) who were interviewed to obtain a comprehensive view regarding the new teaching-learning scenario. The responses showed that the adjustments made to the academic practices might have been enough to stop the system from coming to a halt, but they were inadequate and ineffective in addressing the language needs in a virtual environment.","PeriodicalId":142370,"journal":{"name":"BELTA Journal","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121420531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can be used to engage learners to learn academic English skills at the tertiary level in Bangladesh. This paper examines adoption of Google Classroom through the lens of Rogers’ (2003) diffusion of innovations to investigate learners’ experiences, attitudes, and perceptions towards Google Classroom as a Learning Management System (LMS) to engage students to learn the four skills of English. The researchers have undertaken a mixed methods approach to collect data from 105 tertiary level students who are taking EAP courses in a private university. The findings suggest that the participants have strong positive attitude towards the use of different features of Google Classroom due to the availability of training and technological tools.
