This study deals with the in vivo uptake of <sup>99m</sup>Tc-MDP in the initial postoperative period in rats. Isogeneic or xenogeneic bone was implanted in subcutaneous pouches. The isogeneic grafts and implants were treated with saline or free2e-treated or demineralized. The xenogeneic implants consisted of Kiel bone or collagen sponge. One day after surgery, the accumulation of <sup>99m</sup>Tc after an intraperitoneal injection of <sup>99m</sup>Tc-MDP was seen in all grafts and implants containing bone mineral independent of prior treatment of the graft and implant. In implants composed of only the organic part of bone, no accumulation was observed. One prerequisite for accumulation of <sup>99m</sup>Tc-MDP is the presence of the inorganic phase. Thus, the interpretation of the initial postoperative scan is based on whether or not the graft or implant initially contained mineral.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":14224,"journal":{"name":"International journal of oral surgery","volume":"14 4","pages":"Pages 371-375"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0300-9785(85)80027-2","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15045461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The subjects ranged in age from 33 to 80 years and 28 of the cases had OLP changes of atrophic-erosive type. The possible presence of rheumatoid factors (RF), antinuclear antibodies (ANA) or antibodies to mitochondrias, renal glomeruli and smooth muscles was studied in 30 of the patients. The investigation also comprised a control group of 23 patients (17♀, 6♂) without mucosal changes. Immunoelectrophoresis showed an abnormal pattern in 10 OLP cases (29%), the most common change being a polyclonal increase of IgG in 8 persons. Elevated levels of serum IgG (&gt; 15 g/l) were seen in a total of 9 OLP patients (26%), but only in 1 of the control cases (4%). The mean IgG value was significantly higher in the OLP than in the control group, 13.4 and 10.3 g/l, respectively. Regarding levels of IgA and IgM, no difference was noted between the groups. Autoantibodies were registered in 27% of the OLP patients and in 9% of the controls. The immune changes could be correlated in some respect to positive fungal cultures, allergies and decreased unstimulated saliva, but not to age, endocrine disorders or joint diseases.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":14224,"journal":{"name":"International journal of oral surgery","volume":"14 3","pages":"Pages 259-268"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0300-9785(85)80037-5","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15040577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The population comprised 30 healthy individuals (17♀, 13♂) who needed removal of 2 identical, impacted mandibular third molars. Each patient served as his own control as the teeth were removed in 2 sittings with either steroid or placebo injected into the masseter muscle just before starting the operation.</p><p>Control visits took place 48 h and 7 days after the operations. The results showed that steroid administration led to about 50% reduction of postoperative swelling and trismus and to about 30% reduction of postoperative pain. No general or local complaints/complications occurred due to the steroid injection.</p><p>It is concluded that prophylactic steroid treatment is effective in reducing postoperative complaints and that the administration is safe in the absence of contraindications for such administration.</p><p>Prophylactic steroid treatment is therefore recommended in third molar surgery when pronounced postoperative reaction can be expected.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":14224,"journal":{"name":"International journal of oral surgery","volume":"14 3","pages":"Pages 235-240"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0300-9785(85)80034-X","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"92009353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
