Studia o literackości w internecie written by Elżbieta Winiecka. The author of this monograph has noteworthily analysed relations between literature and the digital world. Important research context here is the notion of literariness and the concept of literary field. The scholar also combines theoretical reflection on the boundaries of literature and the consequences of technological development with critical interpretations of specific texts or projects. The great value of this book is the fact that the author places the reflection regarding digital e-literature in the context of Polish literature and culture. Furthermore, Winiecka emphasises the links between art and contemporary social and political problems. Thus, the researcher takes part in the debate on socially engaged art and the functioning of literary texts in the social space.

The author, referring to the concepts of researchers such as Jurij Łotman, Carol Vernallis, Urszula Jarecka, Mirosław Przylipiak, and others, draws attention to the special type of synthesis which occurs between sound and vision in music videos. Supporting his considerations with the analysis of representative video clips, the author proves that the mutual relation of sound and image is an important element of the narration present in music videos. Sound (in the form of a song) is the core element of music videos, but their polymedia nature allows to emphasize correlation and synthesis of individual layers comprising its structure. The higher-order communication quality created in this way results from the integration of semantically different-code elements, which can be seen in the analytical part.

Published on the eve of the COVID-19 pandemic, the monograph also provides tools for the study of the newly created pandemic literature. \u0000Taking into account the complexity of the research material, which lies on the borderline between the humanities, the social, and biological sciences, the author has quite rightly decided to include her study in the field of medical humanities. The chronological distribution of the extensive research material allowed for taking into consideration the broad historical and social context which influenced the shape of works created in subsequent eras. \u0000Minor inaccuracies include the inappropriate use of terminology (such as the term topos) and the questionable assignment of the novel The Andromeda Strain to Chapter Three (it could easily have found its place in Chapter Four). \u0000Despite these shortcomings, Edyta Rudolf’s work is a valuable monograph which provides tools for studying the image of contagious diseases in popular literature.

However, these ingenious interpretations did not emphasize a crucial aspect of Żeromski’s attitude toward popular fiction, which may be described as metaconscious. Dzieje grzechu [The History of Sin] is a novel in which Stefan Żeromski most unashamedly and outspokenly used various advantages and possibilities offered to him by the realm of popular culture. Yet, in this case being both outspoken and unashamed is not equivocal with a lack of literary self-awareness, as some earlier commentators suggested. Therefore, a central point for my interpretation is a famous scene of homicide committed by the novel’s protagonist, Ewa Pobratyńska, on her lover during their erotic act. This scene, so long and so often dismissed by reviewers and researchers as exaggerated, sordid, cruel, and a sign of the writer’s declining taste, is in fact a verbatim quotation from the late 19th-century penny dreadful as a specific literary convention. When Ewa’s two relentless partners in crime first present her that project, she herself exposes its trivial sources, calling it a “rank idea” taken directly from a vulgar romance. In this way, Dzieje grzechu unmasks fictional and popular elements of its own construction. Yet, it avoids becoming a sheer pastiche, remaining a multidimensional text of several facets and perspectives.

Individual chapters describe the process of social assimilation of video, microcomputers, and satellite television in Poland. Referring to social history, the authors show the beginnings of the Polish digital society in the 1980s.
