Two Gram positive bacteria ( Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus ), and one Gram negative ( Pseudomonas aeruginosa ) and two fungi ( Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans ). The leaves were harvested from mother plants and atissue culture raised progeny growing at the experimental area of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and Traditional Medicine Research Institute. Discdiffusion method was used for determination of the inhibition zone as indicator of the antimicrobial activity. The extracts from V. amygdalina exhibited varying degrees of inhibition activity against the studied bacteria and fungi. The highest value of inhibition (30 mm) obtained was on Staphylococcus aureus using CHCl 3 extract, while the lowest activity was found in the MeOH extract of the Mother plants on tested organisms, comparison with the same extract of progeny. B. subtilis and S. aureus were highly susceptible to theCHCl 3 extracts of both mother plant and progeny, but P. aeruginosa was less sensitive to all different types of the studied extracts.Both types of extracts (CHCl 3 and MeOH) of the leaves from mother plants showed low to moderate activity against both fungi ( A. niger, C. albicans ) compared to the extracts from progeny. From this study it appears that the leaves extracts from V. amygdalina , either frommother plants or progeny had a comparable antimicrobial efficiency, which gives opportunities to propagation and commercial production of this multipurpose plant in Sudan. This result also suggested that V. amygdalina may have individual components that can be used as antibacterial and antifungal.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"19 1","pages":"141-150"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85004130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Only the fatty acid composition was determined by gas chromatography after transformation of the fatty acids into methyl ester derivatives compatible for injection in a Gas Chromatograph,and determined by gas chromatography (GC-FID). Essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation and, analyzed by gas chromatography (GC-FID). Total phenolic content, concentration of flavonoids and, in vitro, antioxidant activities were determined, using spectrophotometric methods. The antioxidant activities was tested by the DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), free radical scavenging assay. Results showed that total fatty acid content varied from 1.78 to 4.86%, based on dry weight (dw) and the predominants fatty acids were oleic acid (63.43–59.76%), linoleic acid (14.93–16.05%) and palmitic acid (9.16–12.13%). The oils contain, an appreciable, amount of unsaturated fatty acids (73.86–85.59%).This study showed that Holm oak leaves, are rich in an unusual fatty acid, the oleic one. The essential oil yield varied, from 0.01 to 0.04%. So the major components, in leaves oils from Quercus ilex L., were trans -2-hexanal (14.89–16.93%), viridiflorol (12.94–15.24%) and sabinene (6.84–9.65%).The total phenolic, content of the samples, varied, from 2.93 to 3.40 mg/g of dry weight, expressed as gallic acid equivalents. The total flavonoid concentrations varied, from 1.83 to 2.72 mg/g, of dry weight quercetin equivalents. The extracts of the leaves were observed displaying strong DPPH free radical scavenging action, with IC 50 value, ranged, from 102.66 to 134.83 µg/mL, comparing to the IC 50 value (48.31µg/mL), of reference standard. These results suggest that phenolics, in this species, provide substantial antioxidant activity and Quercus. Ilex L. may be a potential source of natural antioxidants.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"54 1","pages":"1-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90792943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to evaluate the gastro-protective effect of aqueous extract of green banana pulp powder on aspirin-induced ulcer in albino rats. The effect was studied using aspirin-induced gastric damage in rats and compared between groups which were: group 1 (negative control) received water only, group 2 (positive control) received aspirin. Groups 3 and 4 were received 0.5 g/kg and 1 g/kg of banana extract before aspirin 100 mg/kg, respectively. Groups 5 and 6 were received 0.5 g/kg and 1 g/kg of banana extract of banana extract after aspirin 100 mg/kg, respectively. The results indicate that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in ulcer index between M. cavendishii extract treated groups 3, 4, 5, 6 with ulcer index (15.0 ± 1.31), (09.5 ± 0.64), (09.0 ± 0.79) and 0 respectively when compared to the control group with ulcer index (25.5 ± 1.45). The histopathological assessment showed significant improvement as partial erosion of mucosa with groups 3 and 4, while group 5 and 6 showed total gastric aspirin induced-ulcer protection. The study concluded that banana pulp powder suspension showed significant gastro-protective effect in all groups of rats, promotes ulcer healing and strengthens the mucosa. This study confirmed the use banana in folk medicine for the management of gastric ulcer. The mechanism of protection afforded by bananas has to be further elucidated.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"59 1","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80257579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
