The purpose was to examine whether banditry prevalence has negatively or positively impacted on the psychological well-being of the university teachers. Employing a descriptive survey design, data was collected from 86 lecturers using a Self-Reporting Mental Health Inventory (SMHI). The inventory demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.89) and comprised dimensions reflecting positive mental health attributes. Data analysis involved the utilization of mean scores, one-sample and independent sample t-tests. The results of the analyses revealed that the mean scores for various dimensions of mental health were consistently below 3.0, suggesting a significant level of negative mental health experienced by the participants. This observation underscores concerns about the overall mental well-being of lecturers in the face of banditry-related challenges. Furthermore, an independent sample t-test indicated that gender did not exert a significant influence on the observed negative mental health outcomes. The lack of significant gender differences in mental health status suggests that both male and female lecturers are equally affected by the adverse impact of banditry on their psychological well-being. In conclusion, this study contributes to the understanding of the mental health challenges faced by university lecturers in the context of banditry in Zamfara State. The findings underscore the need for targeted counselling interventions and support strategies to address negative mental health outcomes among lecturers, irrespective of gender, and to cultivate a conducive academic environment that promotes their psychological well-being.","PeriodicalId":139537,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal of Psychology and Counseling","volume":"177 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139236008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the relationship between work-related perceived stress (WRPS), sleep disturbances (SD), and quality of life (QOL) among employed university students. A total of 287 employee students, including both gender (M=72; F=215) with age range 15 to 43 years (mean age = 24.34, SD = 4.9), were included in this study using purposive sampling technique, across Pakistan. Measures include Perceived Stress Scale (α=.81), PROMIS Sleep Disturbances Short Form (α=.88) and Quality of Lif Scale-16 (α=.92). The results show that WRPS is significantly correlated with SD (r=0.397, p<0.01) and negatively correlated with QOL (r=-0.193, p<0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis reveals that SD and QOL are predictors of WRPS. It also confirms that SD is a significant moderator in the Structural Equation Model, and the interaction variable (SD_QOL) is also significant. The findings emphasize the importance of balancing work and academics to reduce stress and improve students' overall quality of life. Further research should investigate specific stressors and their impact on sleep disturbances and the quality of life.","PeriodicalId":139537,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal of Psychology and Counseling","volume":"42 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139238001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, some people experience adversities that affect their psychological conditions, e.g., stress, depression, less happiness, and less psychologically prosperous. One solution to these psychological problems is to increase the attitude of qana’ah/contentment (accepting and being satisfied with what they have). It calls for good qana’ah instrument as the variable has been found to be able to moderate adverse psychological conditions. This study aimed to test the validity and reliability of the qana’ah instrument. The sampling method used was the area random sampling approach. The characteristics of the study samples were male and female, aged 11 to 65 years (from adolescents to the elderly), and come from every province in Indonesia. The sample of the test measuring instrument was obtained by 677 people. The results of the content validity test using the Aiken’s formula show that each item in the measuring instrument has a validity coefficient between 0.79 – 0.92. The estimated reliability coefficient of Alpha Cronbach is 0.992. After eliminating four items that had an item discrimination index of less than 0.300, a Confirmatory Factor Analysis was carried out. The research also found that the item discrimination index ranged from 0.586 to 0.979. Based on calculations using CFA, the CFI (Comparative Fit Index) is 0.987 (>0.900); GFI (Goodness Fit Index) is 0.925 (>0.900); AGFI (Adjusted Goodness of Fit) is 0.914 (>0.900); NFI (Normed Fit Index) is 0.942 (>0.900); and the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation or RMSEA is 0.0197 (<0.08). Factor loading of each item is also above 0.450/range from 0.463 to 0.875. The results of this study indicate that the measuring instrument is a valid and reliable measurement instrument. In addition, this qana’ah measurement tool is also universal because of the sampling method, so it can be used to measure the level of qana’ah in Indonesian people.","PeriodicalId":139537,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal of Psychology and Counseling","volume":"124 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139241004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research investigated the association between two types of rumination (brooding and reflection) and creativity and the mediating role of anxiety in a general population. One hundred thirty-five Filipino adults participated in the study, whose ages ranged from 18 to 53 years old. The respondents were recruited online using the chain referral technique. A cross-sectional quantitative method was utilized in this study. Three assessment tools were used in facilitating the online data collection namely, Rumination Response Scale – Short Form, Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Runco Ideational Behavior Scale (RIBS). Mediation analyses were performed using the General Linear Model technique in the Jamovi Advance Mediation Models package of the Jamovi software to test the hypotheses of the study. The results showed a positive association between the two types of rumination and creativity. Anxiety also showed a significant positive association with creativity and was a significant mediator between the two types of rumination and creativity. The findings added a new contribution to the existing body of knowledge about the mediating role of anxiety between rumination and creativity. Implications for counseling were offered where rumination and anxiety could be tapped as psychological resources to improve creativity. Future research directions were also offered.","PeriodicalId":139537,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal of Psychology and Counseling","volume":"96 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139248866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A qualitative research design by means of correlational approach was adopted to pilot the study. A total of one thousand and eighty-six (1086) participants selected through a process of stratified random sampling from Oyo State, Nigeria, partook in the study. Four measuring instruments: Depression Proneness Rating Scale-11 (α=.77), Dispositional Resilience Scale (α= .73), Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (α= .87), and Pathological Narcissism Inventory (α= .91) were used to garner data. Collected data were subjected to analysis through Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple regression model. Findings revealed that a combination of predictor variable accounted for 42% of the total variance in depression tendency (R2=.417; F (5,1080)= 154.768; p<.01). Independently, psychological hardiness (r=-. 404; β-.236; t= -9.486; p<.01), Normal Perfectionism (r= -.370; β= -.355; t=-12.530; p<.01), and narcissistic grandiosity (r= .238; β=-.213; t= -7.532) yielded anti correlational relationship with depression tendency. However, the relationships of Narcissistic Vulnerability (r=.282; β=286; t=9.866; p< .01) and neurotic perfectionism (r= .238; β=.278; 10.031; p<.01) with depression tendency yielded positive prediction. The study outcomes were discussed, and the studied variables were recommended to be considered while diagnosing depression symptoms among undergraduate students.","PeriodicalId":139537,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal of Psychology and Counseling","volume":"54 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135979024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to determine the experience of PTG in victims of physical, verbal, cyber bullying and factors that influence an individual's ability to experience PTG after experiencing bullying. This study used a phenomenological approach and data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews. Informants were determined using purposive sampling technique based on criteria relevant to the research including: university students, have experienced bullying, have experienced trauma, and achieved post-traumatic growth. The research informants selected were five students who had experienced PTG due to bullying experiences. The results showed that traumatic experiences such as bullying can trigger a process of reflection, meaning making, and emotional growth that leads to positive changes in the victim, such as a stronger, independent, and confident attitude. The study also revealed that the most supportive factors in the PTG process are friends and family. Therefore, a supportive social environment is very important for victims of bullying to achieve PTG.","PeriodicalId":139537,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal of Psychology and Counseling","volume":"21 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136158208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study is to determine the predictive relationship between emotional intelligence, empathy, and general health and to identify demographic predictors on emotional intelligence, empathy, and general health. In a cross-sectional case study, 133 purposively selected counselors from Accra Metropolis were administered an online self-report survey questionnaire that consisted of Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, Empathy Scale and General Health Questionnaire. Findings revealed that emotional intelligence and empathy significantly predict general health. A significant positive correlation exists between emotional intelligence and general health, while a clinical significance of a positive correlation exists between emotional intelligence and empathy. Again, no significant difference was found between the general health of male and female counselors. No significant difference was found in the scores for empathy and emotional intelligence for licensed professional counselors and licensed lay counselors. Since safeguarding the counselor’s health is ethically imperative due to the effect on professional competence, it is recommended that counselors and training institutions deepen effort in creating awareness on the need to protect the health of counselors for the benefit of clients and the high regard of the counseling profession.","PeriodicalId":139537,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal of Psychology and Counseling","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135665575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Meanwhile, various theories state that study habits have an impact on academic achievement. On the other hand, there are students who choose to live in dormitories (hostel living students) and there are also students who go home every day (day-scholar). Thus, this condition is assumed to have an impact on student’s academic achievement. The aim of this research is to investigate differences in academic achievement between hostel living students and day-scholars. The sample was 213 undergraduate students at the University of Peshawar, Pakistan (102 day-scholars and 112 hostel living students). Student study habits are measured by the Study Habits Inventory (SHI) developed by Jones & Slate (1990) and student academic achievement is measured by the Cumulative Achievement Index (GPA). The results showed that study habits significantly predicted increased student academic achievement. Hostel living students have higher scores in study habits and academic achievement compared to day-scholars. A significant positive correlation was found between study habits and academic achievement. This shows that the dormitory environment encourages focused learning and contributes to academic achievement. Interventions for day-scholars should target improved time management and accessible study spaces to improve study habits and academic achievement.","PeriodicalId":139537,"journal":{"name":"Academic Journal of Psychology and Counseling","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136183115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
