We propose to evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the essential oil (EO) of three species used in traditional medicine. \u0000Study Design: Valorization of aromatic and medicinal plants and essential oil. \u0000Methodology: The antioxidant potential of the extracts was evaluated using the Blois method. The antibacterial activity of the different oils at different concentrations was determined for each bacterial strain, by the technique of macro-dilution in solid medium (diffusion in wells). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and The Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were determined. MBC / MIC ratios were calculated. When this ratio is less than 4, the extract is considered to be bactericidal. When it is 4, the extract is considered bacteriostatic. \u0000Results: The antioxidant activity has pointed out the poor antioxidant power of the essential oil(EO) extracted. The EC50 values vary from 15 µg/mL to 32 µg/mg. The antibacterial tests have shown that the samples exert an inhibitory effect on Gram (+) bacteria. The diameters of the inhibition zones vary between 14 and 25 mm for the extracts against 35 mm for the gentamycin. The MBC/MIC is 2 for the gentamycin and 4 for all the EO combined versus the resistant S. aureus methicillin. Therefore, the essential oil has shown a bacteriostatic effect on this strain. As far as S. aureus CIP 483 is concerned, the MBC/MIC has given 1 for the gentamycin, 2 for M. scandens. The EO extract of M. scandens has a bactericidal action against this bacteria strain. \u0000Conclusion: All the essential oils have less antioxidant activity than that of vitamin C. \u0000The antibacterial activity of EO has given satisfactory results on all Gram (+) bacteria. Melanthera scandens Essential Oil shows antibacterial potential against Staphylococcus aureus CIP 483.

Hence, the need for cost-effective, available and accessible novel drug agents for improved health outcomes. This study was undertaken to investigate the antidiabetic effects of the aqueous and ethanol extracts of Ipomoea batatas tubers on alloxan induced diabetes in Wistar albino rats. \u0000Methods: Proximate analysis was conducted directly on the sweet potato tubers using the method of AOAC (2004) while ethanol and aqueous extracts obtained from the Ipomoea batatas tubers were subjected to phytochemical analysis using various standard methods. Seven groups of 5 albino Wistar rats each were used for the study as follows: the negative control group, the standard drug group treated with Glibenclamide, the 200 mg/kg aqueous extract group, the 400 mg/kg aqueous extract group, the 200 mg/kg ethanol extract group, the 400 mg/kg ethanol extract group and the untreated group. The rats were induced to diabetes by administering alloxan (130 mg/kg) intraperitoneally. Further, the extracts were orally administered to the four treatment groups while changes in both weights and blood glucose levels were closely monitored. After 28 days, blood samples were collected and assayed for the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase. Data were further subjected to statistical analysis using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). \u0000Results: The proximate analysis of I. batatas showed a high carbohydrate content of 86.37 ± 0.04 while the fat amount was lowest with 0.58 ± 0.18. The phytochemical analysis indicated a high tannin concentration for both aqueous and ethanol extracts at 87.83 ± 2.91 and 89.05 ± 2.53 respectively whereas the lowest content was found for terpernoids in the aqueous extract and total flavonoids in the ethanol extract. Remarkable recovery from weight loss was more rapid in the 400 mg/kg ethanol extract group (29.09% increase) than the other groups. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the initial and final weights of the animals. The difference in final glucose levels were significant (P < 0.05) across treatment groups when compared with the negative control group. The 400 mg/kg ethanol extract had the highest percentage reduction in glucose level (53.21%) in 28 days, even more than the standard drug group (24.74 %). The 200 mg/kg ethanol extract gave the least percentage reduction. The results showed that there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the activities of the three antioxidant enzymes across treatment groups. \u0000Conclusion: The relatively rapid recovery of weight and reduction in blood glucose levels of the animals observed with the 400 mg/kg ethanol extract showed that it is more potent in the management of diabetes mellitus when compared with the other dosage preparations.

Chitosan was synthesized from periwinkle shell waste by chemical technique involving demineralization, deproteinization and deacetylation. The bleaching was carried out (batch process) at various adsorbent dosages (1.0-3.0 g). The bleaching adsorbents (Periwinkle Shell Powder, PSP and chitosan periwinkle shell powder, CPSP) were characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for their elemental composition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for surface morphology and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) was used to observe the presence of functional groups in the samples. The results obtained revealed alteration in the concentration (wt. %) and distribution of different compositional elements. The broad peak at 3272.6 cm-1 and the absence of bands 1744.4, 1628.8, 1461.1 cm-1 in PSP revealed forming and breaking of bonds in PSP and CPSP. The bleaching process was tested with four different adsorption isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin – Radushkevich (D-R). The PSP has the higher percentage bleaching efficiency (66.56) while CPSP has 47.05 using 1.0 g each of the biopolymer however 1/n Freundlich isotherm constants which is an indication of adsorption intensity was higher in CPSP (3.4) compare with PSP (2.68). The adsorption process followed D-R in both CPSP and PSP (R2; 0.827 and 0.988 respectively) the mean free energies (EkJ/mol) of both CPSP and PSP (-35.71 and -12.90 respectively) were less than 8 kJ/mol suggesting physical adsorption.

With increasing population and decreasing viable land area, there is a dire need of stress-resistant crop plants. Bam-FX treatment provides a sustainable method of priming the immune systems of plants without the need of genetic modifications. \u0000Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) seeds and seedlings were treated with chemically defined elicitors -Bam-FX solutions of different concentrations to assess its effect on seed germination and plantlet morphological growth. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) and High resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HR-LCMS/MS) were used to assess various metabolites in treated samples. We also treated some seeds with fungus (Aspergillus sp. 100 cfu/mL) or organic acids to assess the priming effect in seeds. \u0000We observed that, of the four Bam-FX concentrations initially selected, Bam-FX dilutions of 1:175, 1:250, 1:500 were most effective in inducing the most optimal seed germination and morphological growth of the seedlings. Bam-FX treatment led to most marked upregulation of carboxylic acid and fumaric acid in both Okra seeds and seedlings. The fungal infection seemed to exhibit synergistic effect against Bam-FX treatment. The treatment with organic acids seemed to induce certain metabolites, such as carbamic acid, phenylboronic acid, anthranilic acid, etc., that were not otherwise induced in the non-Bam-FX-treated samples. Bam-FX, though originally designed for optimal plant growth in space, exhibited a high potential in priming the defense mechanisms of Okra against abiotic stresses.

The crude fraction was tested against five gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella typhi, Proteus mirabilis) and three gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and Bacillus subtilis) using macro dilution technique. The antioxidant potentials were evaluated using two different but complementary methods namely ferrous ion chelating activity (FICA) and ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP). Phytocompound isolation was carried out on low pressure open column chromatography. The crude fraction displayed moderate to significant activity against all tested bacteria exhibiting both bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects. The crude fraction showed Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) in the range of 62.50-250 µg/mL and 125-1000 µg/mL respectively. The crude fraction was bactericidal to all tested pathogens except E. coli. The fifty percent effective concentration (EC50) of EDTA standard and the ethyl acetate fraction were obtained as 10.87 μg/mL and 25.77 μg/mL respectively. Similarly the FRAP determinations for ascorbic acid and ethyl acetate fraction yielded 153.63 and 134.40 Fe2+ Equivalent per g of fraction indicating 80.06% and 70.61% FRAP units respectively. The isolated phytocompound coded LAE was obtained as a white crystalline solid with melting point of 136‐138°C and Rf of 0.56 in hexane: ethylacetate (6:4). The isolated compound was identified by spectroscopic data analysis from FT-IR, GC-MS, 1D and 2D NMR and in comparison with literature. The compound was identified as stigmasterol. The observed significant antibacterial and antioxidant properties demonstrated by L. aurita in this study validate its widespread use in traditional medicine. The wound healing property of Eleusine coracana a food source in Nigeria was therefore investigated. The ethanolic crude extract of the seed flour was prepared using maceration and qualitative phytochemical screening was carried out on the crude extract using standard methods. The antimicrobial activity of the E. coracana extract was determined using the disc diffusion method against E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and C. tetani. The wound healing property assay was carried out using the Chorioallantoic Membrane Model (CAM) at 50mg, 100mg, 150mg, and 200mg/ml concentration with the basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF) as the positive control. The crude extract was further fractionated into Hexane, Methanolic, and Aqueous fractions and then subjected to amino acid content analysis using the Applied Biosystems Phenylthiohydantoin (PTH) Amino Acid Analyzer. The phytochemical screening reveals the presence of alkaloids, steroids, terpenes, flavonoids, carbohydrates, glycoside, and protein. E. coli and S. aureus were susceptible to the E. coracana extract at a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 50µg/ml while the P. aeruginosa was only susceptible at 200µg/ml and C. tetani was not susceptible at all the concentrations used. An increase in percentage angiogenesis was observed at all doses of the extract used indicating good wound healing properties. The amino acid profile reveals the presence of glycine, a proline that is important in wound healing. The E. coracana seeds, therefore, have wound healing properties based on the CAM model.

The current study evaluated the hematopoietic potentials and the lipid profile stabilizing potential of ethanol leaf extract of I. batatas in albino rats. The study was carried out at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, between March 2019 and October 2019. The determination of the phytochemical composition of the leaves was carried out. Sixteen albino rats weighing between 100-150g were randomly distributed into 4 groups of 4 rats each. Animals in group 1 served as the control while animals in groups 2, 3, and 4 served as the test groups and were administered 200, 300 and 400g/kg body weight respectively of ethanol leaf extract of I batata for fourteen days following standard procedures. The extract contained terpenoids in high amount, flavonoids and alkaloids in moderate amounts, while glycosides, phenolic, and steroids were present in low amounts. WBC counts increased significantly across the test groups compared to the control. PLT decreased significantly (P = 0.05) in all the test groups when compared to the control group. MCV increased significantly (P = 0.05) in all the test groups when compared to the control group. MCH increased significantly (P = 0.05) in group 2 but decreased significantly in groups 3 and 4 when compared to the control group. The lipid profile parameters; triglycerides (TAG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein (LDL-C) showed no significant changes but HDL-C decreased significantly in group 4 compared to the control. The outcome of this study revealed that the ethanol leaves extract of I. batatas may possess a hematopoietic effect but may not be effective in the management of hyperlipidemia.

It is- rich in an amino - acid called citrulline and may help move blood through the body and widely used as flavouring agent and also contributes substantially towards obtaining a balanced diet. This research was aimed to evaluate the proximate and anti nutritional factors of the plant to ensure human and animal food security. The proximate composition was done by soxhlet extraction, AOAC, Kjeldhal and other standard procedures while anti nutrients were analysed using standard procedures. The results of the research revealed the proximate composition of the water melon seeds such as moisture content, crude protein, lipids, ash content, crude fibre and carbohydrate. Low moisture content (5.20±0.003) high proteins (17.844±0.012) and lipids (18.208± 0.004) with others detected in moderate amount was obtained. Anti - nutritional factors such as oxalate, phytate, cyanide, nitrate, and tannin were also analyzed which revealed low oxalate content (0.005± 0.003) with moderate amount of phytate (4.366±0141), nitrate (47.309±0.539) and cyanide (41.510±0.138). The observations (during 14 days) focused on the number of deaths, convulsions, sleep and coma. Study of sexual activity has been realized by using 20 male rats, distributed in 4 lots of 5 animals. Group 1 treated with distilled water, group 2 treated with 5 mg/kg B.W. of sildenafil citrate and the other two batches received respectively the doses 500 and 1000 mg/kg of the aqueous extract of Rauvolfia vomitoria. Females in estrus state (in heat) were introduced for a period of 30 minutes. During this period, parameters of sexual behavior were recorded. At the end of the 8-day treatment, organs such as penis testicles, seminal vesicles, prostate, epididymis and elevator muscle were removed. These organs were studied in order to determine pharmacological effects of aqueous extract of Rauvolfia vomitoria. \u0000Results: The aqueous extract of Rauvolfia vomitoria showed no evidence of single dose toxicity (2000 mg/kg) when studying acute toxicity. Ride latency time, coitus latency time and ejaculation latency time was significantly decreased (P<0.001) with regard to negative control (distilled water). Ride frequency, coitus fraquency and ejaculation frequency was significantly increased (P<0.001) with regard to negative control (distilled water). No significant difference (P˃0.05) has been recorded on organ androgeno-dependant. \u0000Conclusion: Aqueous extract of R. vomitoria has sexual stimulating activity or an aphrodisiac potential which could justify its traditional use. The aphrodisiac potential is higher at the dose of 1000 mg/kg b.w .
