A series of in-vivo experiments were carried out using a recently upgraded clinical prototype based on the principles of ultrasound tomography. The in-vivo performance of the prototype was assessed by imaging patients at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Our techniques successfully demonstrated in-vivo tomographic imaging of breast architecture in both reflection and transmission imaging modes. Masses as small as 6 mm in size were detected. These initial results indicate that operator- independent whole-breast imaging and the detection of cancerous breast masses are feasible using ultrasound tomography techniques. This approach has the potential to provide a low cost, non-invasive, and non-ionizing means of evaluating breast masses. Future work will concentrate on extending these results to larger trials.","PeriodicalId":138702,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on BioMedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116862501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ligation of murine GITR/GITRL can enhance immunity reactions via several signal pathways. However, so far the certain function of hGITR is not clear. In the proposed method first we have applied a noise reduction method and then we apply some suitable preprocessing on histogram of the medical images and after that histogram equalization has been applied on the new histogram. Our proposed method in despite of its simplicity has better results in compare to other usual methods based on histogram equalization. The quality of resulted images after applying our proposed methods has been tested on a database (medical images) with a confirmed criterion by viewer. Also we have considered a mathematical criterion for comparing our proposed algorithm with other available methods for contrast enhancement. Results show the better efficiency of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":138702,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on BioMedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127267329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a hybrid optimization algorithm is proposed. When dealing with multimodality medical images, the authors search the best matching parameters by applying mutual information as similarity measure and hybrid optimization algorithm as search strategy. The registration results prove that the subvoxel accuracy can be achieved and this method is an efficient registration one which can avoid getting into the local optimum.","PeriodicalId":138702,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on BioMedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125074928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The microdevice was fabricated by micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) technology, which was made of a silicon wafer with a single step of deep reaction ion etching and a PDMS-glass cover. The process of plasma separation was implemented continuously without problems of clogging or jamming. The plasma selectivity of 95.36% % is obtained under the optimal conditions. This microdevice has the potential to integrate into micro total analytical system (muTAS) with the advantages of low cost, short analytical time, disposability, low reagent and sample consumption, which will create a microanalysis system for point-of-care diagnostics.","PeriodicalId":138702,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on BioMedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126160641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For mobile applications, short term analysis of HRV features may be ideal since conventional heartbeat recordings (3-5 min) might be inadequately long. In this study, short term analysis has been performed for heartbeat data obtained at five different time points from two subject groups (15 under high and 18 under low mental stress). The reliability of short term heartbeat data was demonstrated by detecting significant differences in long term patterns of HR V features between two groups. Fifteen to thirty second heartbeat measurements were long enough to produce reliable long term patterns of HRVfeatures. Thus, short and intermittent recordings of heartbeats could be used to detect long term HR Vpatterns and offer a convenient method to monitor mental stress in mobile environments.","PeriodicalId":138702,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on BioMedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126197187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of the fluctuation of clinical symptoms and large inter-rater and intra-rater variation, traditional method of analyzing postural instability using its onset time measure can result in controversial conclusion of treatment benefit. We propose a Brownian motion based latent structure model to study treatment's effect on postural instability The new method not only incorporates patient's multiple onset times, but also the special covariate structure of postural instability process. The proposed model does not require even-spaced visiting schedules, and the correlation of the binary process is naturally built through the underlying latent Brownian motion process. Theoretical and computational properties of the proposed model are examined. A dataset from a double-blinded multicenter Parkinson's disease clinical trial is used to demonstrate the methodology.","PeriodicalId":138702,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on BioMedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123605512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The electric field inside each layer of the medium is explicitly provided as combination of Hankel functions starting from the exact integral expressions for the electromagnetic (EM) field generated by a current-carrying loop located horizontally above a two-layered earth. The radial distribution of the SAR and the peak heating as a function of the frequency are computed by applying the proposed model and the zero-order model based on the quasi-static field assumption. Numerical results show that the zero-order model leads to over-estimate the SAR up to more than 20%.","PeriodicalId":138702,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on BioMedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126941682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
