Interfacial boundary conditions are partly left to the volumetric integrals, some to the surface integrals, and some as constraints imposed directly on the fields. The antennas are excited by Gunn-diode sources plus half-loop feeds. The power and radiation characteristics of one-, two-, and three-diode antenna-oscillators are described and compared. This approach also makes it possible to consider aspects related to manufacturing, such as the effects of the glue used to bond the various substrates and the effects of a possible radome. Using this technique, stacked antennas can be designed and analyzed in terms of input impedance. In order to verify the theory and the relevant computer code a single aperture-coupled patch antenna was realized and tested. This model incorporates all the physical aspects of the high-T/sub c/ superconductor materials through London's equations. It also satisfies all the electromagnetically required boundary conditions in the structure using Maxwell's equations. The physical characteristics of the superconductor are blended with the electromagnetic model by using the phenomenological two-fluid model. The finite difference method is used to implement this model because it has a great deal of flexibility, and equations may be derived directly from Maxwell's equations. The complex propagation constant is calculated. The losses inside the superconductor material are also evaluated. The amplifier is based on the integrated horn antenna and uses polarization duplexing to isolate the output beam from the input beam. A prototype hybrid amplifier with a measured gain of 10.6 dB at 6 GHz is reported. The amplifier design is uniplanar and compact, and is compatible with the fabrication process of high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) at millimeter-wave frequencies. This printed end-fire bunny-ear element is fed by a balanced slot line, and it can operate over 0.5 to 18 GHz with very low loss in an isolated environment. The input transition, the feed line, and the launching section of this element are essentially TEM (transverse electromagnetic) structures. Using this method, a variety of coaxial radiators can be treated as BVPs and precisely solved for their accurate global solution. Three examples are given for illustration: an open-ended coaxial line radiator, hemispherical monopole radiators, and a hemispherical monopole antenna covered by a dielectric shell.
