Malaysia has experienced this disaster many times since 1969. This natural hazard has become a major research concern for Malaysian government when many people were injured badly and even had been killed. Many previous research works published in the open literature aimed at designing a system that could detect landslide in early stage before the landslide becomes catastrophic. This paper presents the early works on a major work-in-progress landslide early warning system for Malaysian environment. The aim of this system is to develop the most efficiently reliable cost-effective system in which slight earth movements are monitored continuously. The challenge this work aims at is to work with a low budget system that produces efficient performance. Hence, the material used is off-the-shelf. Early design optimization results of the vibration sensor used is quite promising detecting the slightest faint tremors, which are amplified using the best vibration chamber available. It is shown that the choice of proper pipe length and diameter dimensions in combination to a gravel to exaggerate the produced higher sensitivity level noise of 5 dB.","PeriodicalId":137841,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 4th International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Application (ICSIMA)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125040448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The non-ideal device can be represented by a simple equivalent circuit consists of a capacitor and a resistor components. The characterization of these components can be done by conducting transient analysis charge-discharge-cycle (CDC). This paper is reporting the findings of CDC procedures done on a commercial supercapacitor device with rated 2.7 V 350 F and 2.5 miliohms equivalent series resistance (ESR). Two procedures; a standard CDC and manufacturer recommended CDC were done and the results are discussed. Even though the piezoelectric requires high voltage, there are findings to overcome the shortcomings. Adding on a magnet at the tip of the piezoelectric fan to activate other magnetic passive fans is one of the methods to increase the total amplitude generated by the fans. This paper will discuss on the performance of integrated piezoelectric fan with passive fans (later refer to magnetic fans) to enhance the heat transfer in cooling system. A repulsive force produced by the magnets will cause the magnetic blades to oscillate together with the piezoelectric fan. The paper will focus on the optimization parameters of the magnets for selected dimension of piezoelectric fan. The parameters under investigation are the position of the magnet on the piezoelectric fan, number of magnets on each blades and orientation of blades with respect to adjacent blade. Results show that the magnet at middle location of extensive blade with double magnets generate the largest amplitude, 80% better than fan without magnet and for dual integrated piezoelectric fan with magnetic fan, radial orientation gives better result by 25%. By increasing the total amplitude, it shows a good agreement for positive heat transfer improvement compared to natural convection.","PeriodicalId":137841,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 4th International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Application (ICSIMA)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126644700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Smart phone applications have self-monitoring and sensing capabilities and are used in health interventions and disease prevention. Risk of diseases can be mapped on the data gathered via self-reports or phone sensors in order to provide access to rich health information or to inform caretakers. In this study, a prototype mobile sensing platform was introduced for m-Health and telemedicine applications, which reports user behaviors by means of in-built sensors, connected to external sensors. To provide information on the physical state and health of users, a wireless body area network (WBAN) was used for appropriate context sensing. Applications can sense the environment in context-aware computation and respond with adaptability; hence, an ontology-based model was used for reasoning on context information to extract implicit information on patients' life.","PeriodicalId":137841,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 4th International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Application (ICSIMA)","volume":"232 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132574529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such transducer is needed to decide how much extra contents of these nutrients are to be added to the soil to increase soil fertility. This can improve the quality of soil and reduces the undesired use of fertilizers to be added to the soil. The N, P, and K value of the sample are determined by absorption light of each nutrient. The optical transducer is implemented as a detection sensor which consists of three LEDs as light source and a photodiode as a light detector. The wavelength of LEDs is chosen to fit the absorption band of each nutrient. The nutrient absorbs the light from LED and the photodiode convert the remaining light that is reflected by reflector to current. The system utilizes an Arduino microcontroller for data acquisition therefore the output from the transducer is converted into a digital display reading. Testing on various samples of soils, showed that the optical transducer can evaluate the amounts of NPK soil content as High, Medium and Low.","PeriodicalId":137841,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 4th International Conference on Smart Instrumentation, Measurement and Application (ICSIMA)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127540520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
