The studied Ochradenus baccatus populations collected from Wadi Degla, Egypt revealed that O. baccatus is gynodioecious species, with female individuals that are constant in sex expression and males that exhibit great variation in functional gender. The field study revealed the presence of inconstant male of O. baccatus in different forms ranging from high fruit-producing to low or nonfruit producing forms with two intermediate forms. The pollen morphology of all the four forms was examined using LM and SEM. This study is the first dealing with pollen grain morphological diversity within different O. baccatus populations, representing model of the inconstant male of a gynodioecious species. Generally, the examined Ochradenus baccatus pollen grains appeared under SEM as 3-colporate, isopolar, radiallysymmetrical, with reticulate exine sculpturing. This study revealed the presence of a variability in pollen size, shape, aperture and exine sculpturing in different forms. The polymorphic pattern observed in inconstant O. baccatus male populations in Egypt was attributed to internal factors, the polyploidy phenomenon was among them and the external factors were excluded.","PeriodicalId":13776,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Biosciences","volume":"34 1 1","pages":"57-65"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85766865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pakistan stands among top ten spinach producing countries in the world and contributes considerably to the income. However, lack of proper storage facilities and microbial attack result in post-harvest losses. Food irradiation reduced storage losses, extended shelf life and improved microbiological and parasitological safety of foods. In present study, flat leaf variety of spinach was exposed to various gamma radiation doses (0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 kGy). The microbial flora of spinach before and after irradiation was analyzed to determine significant changes in the population of spoilage microorganisms. In the present study 0.75 kGy proved to be the most beneficial in reducing the microbial flora without affecting the sensory properties of flat leaf spinach and extended the shelf life up to 4days. So, this study can be useful in shelf life enhancement for export purpose.","PeriodicalId":13776,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Biosciences","volume":"20 1","pages":"127-134"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75175823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Blood and urine glucose increases due to the lack of insulin in the body. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the role of IL-10 gene polymorphisms as susceptibility markers for Pakistani patients. IL-10 promoter polymorphisms (positions-592A/C) were analyzed in 183 individuals of Abbottabd. Ninety three known Pakistani patients with type-1 diabetes including 49 men and 44 women were recruited; having age ranged from 1.0 –70.0 years. Ninety one healthy individuals with no family history of diabetes were included as control. RFLP and PCR were used to detect allelic polymorphism of the IL-10 gene promoter region at position -592. Results indicated that the genotype frequency of the allel (592A) was associated with type-1 diabetes. The genotype frequency of -592A allele was higher in adult patients than in old age patients. Our investigation suggests that IL-10 gene polymorphisms could be involved in the development of type-1 diabetes in the Pakistani population.","PeriodicalId":13776,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Biosciences","volume":"81 1","pages":"325-330"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74418660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Raisin and prune concentrate and commercial sorbitol were incorporated into the Barbari bread formulation at different levels and their effects on the rheological, baking properties and shelf life of breads were evaluated. Supplemented dough absorbed more water than control. The presence of sorbitol, raisin and prune concentrate slightly increased dough development time. Firmness of breads decreased about the 15% for bread containing 4% raisin concentrate and 40% for bread containing 4% prune concentrate, and 40% for 1% sorbitol. Addition of raisin and prune concentrate showed more reduction in water activity in compare with control. Breads containing raisin concentrate, prune concentrate were sensory rated higher than those with sorbitol and control. Results showed that, raisin and prune concentrate could be used as a natural ingredient to prolong the shelf life and improve baking quality of Barbari bread.","PeriodicalId":13776,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Biosciences","volume":"142 1","pages":"303-312"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75677375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, the mineral phosphate solubilization activity was evaluated for 4 Pseudomonas strains isolated from rice rhizosphere. For qualitative tests, different media were used; NBRIP, YED and Pikovskaya (PVK) amended with 0.5% Ca3(PO4)2 and modified PVK medium containing CaHPO4, Ca5HO13P3, FePO4 and AlPO4 as P source. All bacteria were able to dissolve calcium phosphates, while none was surrounded by transparent halos when FePO4 and AlPO4 were the P source. Quantitative test was assessed in PVK substituting glucose by sucrose and galactose. The highest levels of soluble P were recorded in the presence of glucose, while it didn’t exceed 43.64 μg / ml and 19.19 µg / ml in the presence of galactose and sucrose, respectively. Therefore, glucose has been chosen as a carbon source to assay the effect of carbon concentration on P solubilization ability. The level of dissolved P was enhanced with increasing amount of glucose (1%, 2% and 3% (w/v)). In all cases, the P biosolubilisation was accompanied by a significant pH decrease of the liquid media. A significant inverse correlation was found between P concentrations and pH reduction. Thus, acidification of the media seems to be the main mechanism for calcium phosphates solubilization in this study, and these test strains could serve as efficient biofertilizer candidates for improving crop production in low P soils.","PeriodicalId":13776,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Biosciences","volume":"29 1","pages":"116-124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75064554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
