For a system using Adaptive Coding and Modulation at its physical layer the problem of optimally apportioning the satellite carriers' among the many different waveforms, or modes, available becomes crucial to its efficiency. In current DVB-RCS systems the carriers' waveforms are defined during system design. In this work a process to dynamically define carrier waveforms during system operation, based on prevailing traffic and propagation conditions, is proposed whereby the system available capacity, and QoS are shown, via simulations, to improve compared to a static definition.","PeriodicalId":137431,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133464482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both satellite and terrestrial networks cannot guarantee this on their own. This incapability is attributed to capacity coverage issues in densely populated areas for satellites and lack of infrastructure in rural areas for terrestrial networks. Therefore, we consider a hybrid terrestrial-satellite mobile system based on frequency reuse. However, this frequency reuse introduces severe Co-Channel Interference (CCI) at the satellite end. To mitigate CCI, we propose an OFDM based adaptive beamformer implemented on-board the satellite with pilot reallocation at the transmitter side. Results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional approach.","PeriodicalId":137431,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131538818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, when the satellite receiver is mobile, short and long disruptions due to line of sight obstructions can cause further performance deterioration. In this paper, we present a preliminary assessment of disruption impact on performance comparing different approaches, such as end-to-end TCP, PEP based on TCP splitting and DTN. Performance is evaluated on a Linux testbed, by emulating the satellite link interruptions caused by tunnels on a real railway line. Results show that good performance can be achieved by all of the approaches considered provided that on the satellite channel an efficient TCP variant, like Hybla, is adopted; however, DTN offers best performance. DTN superiority emerges when the disrupted satellite channel is the last leg of a congested path, thanks to the DTN custody transfer mechanism and store and forward capability.","PeriodicalId":137431,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131567630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, new simple expressions for the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the sum of possibly correlated non identically distributed squared SR random variables are derived. To this end, a novel approach is introduced for Laplace inverting the moment generating function (MGF) of the sum. Based on this approach the PDF is expressed in a simple infinite chi-squared series form, from which the CDF is also easily obtained. The derived statistics are used to analyze the performance of maximal ratio combining (MRC) over SR fading channels and novel closed-form expressions for various performance criteria such as the outage probability, the ergodic capacity and the bit error probability (BEP) are developed. The results of extensive Monte Carlo simulations are presented, which corroborate our theoretical analysis.","PeriodicalId":137431,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132335780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition a parametric model is proposed to estimate the impact of aircraft attitude change (roll, pitch, and yaw) to the satellite antenna view angles. Without delving into the details of geometrical attitude modeling, it is shown that an accurate argument can be constructed on the impact of aircraft movements and banking maneuvers to the satellite view angle. The results are presented as statistics over global scheduled flights in one day period. The statistic results are discussed at the end of the paper, where their impacts to the overall system design are analyzed.","PeriodicalId":137431,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"360 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115900325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An outline of the driving user needs, the key system trade off and associated technological challenges as well as the overall partnership strategy with the commercial stakeholders is being described. In frame of the European activities for human exploration a mission concept for an early data relay service and a first Moon lander was elaborated as a joint mission proposal. This mission provides low power communication between the lunar surface and Earth as well as early positioning services on the Moon surface for the first lunar explorers. The Data Relay for Moon (DROM) spacecraft will be launched together with the Moon lander and the combined mission is called the Moon Orbiter and Lander (MOL). One attractive feature of the proposed concept is that the DROM spacecraft will establish a high data rate link between the Moon orbit and the Earth. However, high data rates are not required for the early part of the mission. The DROM payload will be used in his early life span to map the lunar surface with high resolution and will use the data relay link to deliver these data to Earth stations. The third part of this paper is to elaborate concepts for high data rate communication between the Mars surface and the Earth supporting Human exploration of Mars.","PeriodicalId":137431,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122148254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
