With the emergence of the pandemic and additional surges, the rate of pressure injuries increased. The goal of this performance improvement initiative was to reduce hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) related to COVID-19 on patients requiring Critical Care. Methods : The Critical Care team created a Critical Care Admission Pressure Injury Prevention Cart containing preventative dressings for all pressure areas at risk. Results : Prior to the implementation of the Critical Care Admission Pressure Injury Prevention Cart in January 2022, the Critical Care Unit reported fifty-six hospital acquired pressure injuries. From January 2022 through September 2022, there was a 98% reduction with only one acquired pressure injury identified. The cart was successful in the Critical Care Unit, therefore, it was also implemented in all high acuity areas of the hospital. Conclusions : The cart initiative was developed by a multidisciplinary team, consisting of nursing, the wound and skin team, respiratory care, and leadership working together towards the goal of patient safety and pressure injury prevention.","PeriodicalId":135706,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127658882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To improve patient safety, The Joint Commission recommended the use of standardized hand-off communication tools in 2012. One acute care hospital located in the Southeastern United States implemented standardized hand-off reports as required and made few revisions since then. The COVID-19 pandemic brought to light additional critical information that was needed to keep patients and staff safe, such as laboratory results indicating the need for isolation precautions. The nurses within the surgical services department noticed this critical information was not consistently included in the hand-off reports. Omission of this critical information could potentially lead to unnecessary staff exposures and delays in treatments. The quality improvement nurse noticed a significant drop in the documentation of the hand-off report leading to concerns for patient and staff safety. The purpose of this performance improvement project was to improve the documentation of hand-off report which was the measurement used by the department to monitor the quality of hand-off reports within the department. The project followed the Plan-Do-Check-Act model for performance improvement to monitor, assess, and report the results to the staff and leaders. The documentation improved as a result of this project indicating improved hand-off reports.","PeriodicalId":135706,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122594472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New knowledge (evidence generated through nursing research) and translation of the evidence using EBP models align with this expectation. Recent evidence suggests EBP/research education and training have positive impacts on nurses’ attitudes, beliefs, and use of EBP and participation in research (Black et al., 2019; Cardoso et al., 2021; Duffy et al., 2016; Engerelli & Belirlenmesi, 2019; Keib et al., 2017; Koota et al., 2020; Rholdon et al., 2021). Furthermore, nurses’ involvement in research studies beyond participation as data collectors provides hands-on learning opportunities thereby increasing knowledge and encouraging positive attitudes towards EBP and research (Fowler & Brown, 2020; Wentland & Hinderer, 2020). While hands-on learning provides an opportunity to apply knowledge, a foundation of EBP and research knowledge is needed before execution or application. A literature search revealed no articles that addressed two-fold education on both clinical practice questions and research questions to provide sideby-side comparisons of the two methods of inquiry and guidance for writing well-written questions. Mentoring has been identified as an effective method to decrease turnover resulting in retention of experienced nurses. Despite the benefits of a mentoring relationship, barriers exist in creating and cultivating a formal mentoring program in the hospital setting. Methods : A qualitative descriptive study that explored nurses’ perceptions of a mentoring culture within a hospital environment was used. Open-ended, conversational-style interviewing techniques with a semi-structured interview guide were utilized to gain a full description of nurses’ perceptions of a mentoring culture within a hospital environment. Results : A structural model of mentoring as perceived by hospital nurses was developed from the data. Five overarching themes with corresponding subthemes emerged from nurses’ perceptions. (1) Mentoring culture: various mentoring models, informal vs formal, leader focused, and evolving. (2) Experience with mentoring: going above and beyond, lifetime relationships, personal/professional growth, and feeling cared for. (3) Benefits: connections, development, retention, stability, patient safety, and making a difference. (4) Barriers: time, patients/patience, competition, knowledge deficit regarding mentor verses preceptor roles, lack of incentives, and receptiveness. (5) Paradigm shift: match generational and cultural differences, resources, and face-to-face. Discussion : The study results have identified mentoring as an integral aspect of personal and professional growth within the hospital environment. The rewards of mentoring or being mentored can be translated into increased nursing retention and improved","PeriodicalId":135706,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115361546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
