In practice, the relative positions between the centers of arc detector, sample and beam spot may overlap or misalign. Therefore, it is necessary to calibrate the instrument parameters and detection angle of the arc detector. The calibration is routinely performed by standard samples. In this contribution, the equations for angle calibration and error evaluation are constructed based on three standard diffraction peaks, and the corresponding simulation and experiment are performed to verify the feasibility of the calibration. The results indicate that the larger the coverage and the more uniform the dispersion of the three standard diffraction peaks distributed on the detector, the smaller the calibration error.Keywords: Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS)one-dimensional arc detectorangle calibration AcknowledgementThe authors thank Zhonghua Wu, Zhongjun Chen, Zhan Shi, Xueqing Xing, Lei Yao and Hao Wang for their help with the WAXS experiments.Disclosure statementNo conflicts of interest are reported by the authors.Additional informationFundingThis work was supported by the National Key R & D Program of China [grant number 2017YFA0403000], the National Natural Science Foundation of China [grants number U1910206, 22278295, 22378291 and U1910201] and the Key R & D projects in Shanxi Province [grant number 202102090301002], and the National Key Laboratory of High Efficiency and Low Carbon Utilization of Coal [grants number J23-24-612].","PeriodicalId":13547,"journal":{"name":"Instrumentation Science & Technology","volume":"6 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135142012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article introduces a laser diode-based sensor that identifies seven surface conditions and accurately measure ice, water, and snow film thicknesses on roads. An optical module was developed to detect weak optical signals based on the characteristic absorption spectrum of the target surface. The module used three laser diodes (1310, 1440, and 1550 nm wavelengths) as light sources. Additionally, a road classification algorithm that is adaptable to foggy weather was developed using a multi-wavelength processing protocol. The sensor was subjected to numerous calibration and performance verification experiments. During thick foggy measurements, the processed spectra displayed a maximum variation of 2.372% across a 600 to 25,000 m visibility range with a relative standard deviation of only 0.328%. This demonstrated effective weakening of the effects of visibility variations. During winter field testing, the sensor classified road conditions effectively and accurately measured ice, snow, and water film thicknesses, with a correlation coefficient of 0.97444. The accuracy of the measurements was less than 0.5 mm. The sensor’s effectiveness for long-term field-based road testing has been verified.Keywords: Diode laserinfrared spectrometrymulti-wavelength processingoptical sensorroad surface condition AcknowledgmentWe thank David MacDonald, MSc, from Liwen Bianji (Edanz) (www.liwenbianji.cn/) for editing the English text of a draft of this manuscript.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.Additional informationFundingThis work was supported by the Key Research and Development Projects in Anhui Province, China under Grant 1908085MD114.","PeriodicalId":13547,"journal":{"name":"Instrumentation Science & Technology","volume":" 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135241928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The flexible rosette eddy current sensor is typically used for the structural monitoring of bolt connections and riveted joints. This study proposes a method to improve the sensitivity of a flexible rosette eddy current sensor by reducing the cloud zenith angle of the pickup coil. First, the effect of the cloud zenith angle upon the sensitivity of the flexible rosette eddy current sensor is analyzed theoretically; the results show that a larger cloud zenith angle corresponds to a larger background signal. This diminishes the relative rate of change of the crack signal when the sensitivity of the sensor is evaluated based upon the maximum rate of change of the output. Therefore, the sensitivity is optimized by reducing the cloud zenith angle. Subsequently, through simulation and experimental methods, the relationship between sensor sensitivity and cloud zenith angle was studied. The results indicate that the cloud zenith angle significantly affects the sensitivity and that reducing the cloud zenith angle effectively reduces the background and improves the sensitivity.Keywords: Bolt connectionscloud zenith angleeddy current sensorfatigue cracksstructural health monitoring AcknowledgmentsThis study was financially supported by the Nature Science Foundation of Gansu Province of China (Grant No. 22JR5RA229), and the National Nature Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 51807086).Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.","PeriodicalId":13547,"journal":{"name":"Instrumentation Science & Technology","volume":"331 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135475569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An investigation of the sensor’s properties during stretching and relaxation under varying experimental conditions was undertaken. The morphologies of the sensing films were examined to gain an understanding of their structure. The experimental design was complemented by simulation to optimize the shape and size of the substrate to ensure uniform and consistent straining under loading conditions. The insight derived from the computational analysis played an instrumental role in selecting the appropriate substrate design and determining the ideal location for placing the PVDF/CNTs sensing film. The difference in the deformation value of the substrate with the selected design during the computational and experimental analysis was 17.5%. An integrated approach, combining both experimental and computational methodologies, was used to significantly enhance the study’s value and facilitate the development of an efficient and effective strain sensor. The sensor displayed a gauge factor (GF) of 1.83 and 1.19 under the incremental loads of 0.98 and 1.96 N, respectively. In conclusion, this study contributes to an improved understanding of the strain sensor’s characteristics and potential applications in structural health monitoring technologies.Keywords: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)polyimide (PI) substratepolyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) AcknowledgmentsThe authors also thank the anonymous reviewers, along with the editors, for providing useful comments, which greatly improved the manuscript.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Additional informationFundingThis work was supported by the SEED grant bearing no.
