Material and Methods: All thirteen public schools in the city of Xaxim had their physical structure assessed concerning the conditions of floors, windows, stairs, capacity, type of surface of the schoolyard, number of supervisors during recess, and social inclusion. The social environment was assessed through the application of the Brazilian National School-Based Health Survey (PeNSE) to either school principals or educational coordinators. Regarding the social environment, areas for student physical activities, episodes of violence (swearing, physical and verbal aggression), and cases of robbery and theft in the school environment were assessed. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Situations considered of risk for the occurrence of accidents and dental trauma were identified. Most schools presented episodes of swearing and fights among students, as well as inadequate physical environment. Conclusion: Both social and physical environments were favorable to the occurrence of dental trauma; however, studies that establish this relationship in a deeper fashion are still necessary.","PeriodicalId":134552,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Research in Pediatric Dentistry and Integrated Clinic","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126217671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: Case-control study was performed with a probabilistic sample of 163 children in inter-transitional mixed dentition (age:8.8 years ±0.8). Cases were 37 children with GS, and controls were 126 children without GS. Occlusal variables were assessed through clinical examination, and soft tissue variables were assessed through photograms. Kappa test and intraclass correlation coefficient were done (0.87-0.96). The association between malocclusion, gender, and types of smile was assessed using a Chi square test. Comparison of quantitative variables in smile groups was made by Student t test. A multivariate binary logistic regression was performed. Results: Class II malocclusion, short upper lip at smile and short incisor clinical crown, were risk factors for gummy smile (OR= 10.4, 95%CI 3.07- 34.95, OR= 2.1, 95%CI 1.44- 3.13 and OR= 2.5 95%CI 1.34- 4.54 respectively). Lower facial height was a protective factor against GS (OR= 0.76; 95%CI 0.69- 0.85). The logistic regression model explains 48% of GS variability. Conclusion: Class II malocclusion is considered a risk factor for gummy smile. Other variables associated to gummy smile were short upper lip and short incisor clinical crown. Clinicians should considered these aspects in clinical examination of each patient to provide an adequate diagnostic and plan of treatment to control and/or correct a GS.","PeriodicalId":134552,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Research in Pediatric Dentistry and Integrated Clinic","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131280773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study whose sample consisted of 1015 children aged 5-12 years from 10 public schools of Salvador, Brazil. The students produced drawings about their main idea associated with the dentist and answered a semi-structured interview consisting of seven items. Results: Males (521 volunteers - 51.3%) were more prevalent than females (494 volunteers, 48.6%), 688 (67.7%) children had experienced dental care, and need for treatment was the reason for seeking dental care to 306 (30.1%) of them. In describing the professional using one word, positive words totaled 805 (79.1%) responses, negative words accounted for 24 (2.2%) and 186 (18.3%) participants could not answer. The drawing category that had the largest number of volunteers was “Procedures”, with 238 (23.4%) drawings, followed by: “Dental Consultation” with 228 (22.4%), “Other Professionals” with 174 (17.1%), “Dentist” with 115 (11.3%), “Oral Health” with 71 (6.9%), “Miscellaneous” with 71 (6.9%), “Dental Office” with 55 (5.4%), “Mouth” with 36 (3.5%) and “Pain / Fear” with 27 (2.6%). Conclusion: Drawings were effective in representing the particular vision of students and showed a plurality and complexity of concepts and ideas related to the dentist. In addition to procedures and consultation, professional behavior, knowledge transmitted to patients, physical environment and experienced sensations, factors linked to the origin of the main idea about the professional were also relevant. The perception of volunteers was positive both in the drawings as in the responses of the semi-structured interview.","PeriodicalId":134552,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Research in Pediatric Dentistry and Integrated Clinic","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122253047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
