Within this study we report on the design of inkjet printed capacitive touch and humidity sensors on thermoplastic substrates, to fabricate printed functional structures on injection molded 3D components. Both sensors are based on printed differential interdigital capacitors (IDC) made of silver ink and a printed sensitive layer. Reproducible results and low hysteresis were achieved, proving the concept to be able to improve sensitivity and to reduce drift effects due to temperature as well as moisture absorption by the substrate.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"349 1","pages":"2234-2237"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82591358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The porous polymer enables to extract target physically as filter, and to immobilize biological molecules such as antibody sufficiently. In this report, Escherichia coli (E. coli) deposited on PTFE filter was detected experimentally. Frequency shifts of transmission peaks at about 9.4 THz showed clear correlation with number of the bacteria, and sensitivity reached to 1.5×105 /mm2 (150 ng/mm2 of weight). It was also succeeded to fix porous polymer layer to the metal structure directly, which expects the sensor to be operated more easily.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"26 1","pages":"2191-2194"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80232804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a simple autonomous and continuous method to measure them does not exist. Here we present a novel design of electrochemical phosphate (PO43-) sensor that is stable, reagent-less, can be used multiple times without degradation and is not significantly affected by common interferences. This new design has been shown to have good sensing response of phosphate in the concentration spanning clean to waste water (10-1 to 10-4 M). It also overcomes the two major disadvantages of other phosphate sensors, namely: lifetime and interference by its unique design. Due to its many advantages, this sensor is a viable option for autonomous and continuous monitoring of phosphates in the environment.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"51 1","pages":"1423-1426"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80730711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It consists of a completely-passive ultra-wideband radiofrequency identification tag, based on an antenna connected to a delay line. The delay line is loaded by a nitinol thermal switch. The switch modifies the amplitude of the backscattered signal when a temperature threshold is surpassed. The sensor is able to store the occurrence of the thermal threshold violation and performs the sensing activity independently of the reader interrogation. The length of the delay line defines a unique identification code for the sensor, which is read using a low-cost ultra-wideband radar.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"163 1 1","pages":"1503-1506"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77829634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, a coil is demonstrated based on pulling a low melting point (fusible) metal alloy in liquid form through fluidic channels in soft silicone. Although solid at room temperature, when inductors made of Field's metal are heated through Joule heating above the melting point (62°C) of the alloy, the traces melt, allowing deformation to conform to a surface. The heating power can then be removed, causing the alloy to solidify and hold the new shape. This recasting is demonstrated by creating a mechanically tunable inductor. The coil is stretched to tune the inductance while liquid, with solidification used as a latching mechanism to hold the inductance with zero static power. During tuning, an applied power of 0.8 W is used to melt the inductor traces. Tuning of 50%, from 96 nH to 147 nH, is demonstrated with a fusible alloy inductor; when the inductor was again re-heated, the inductance returned to the initial value due to the restoring mechanical force of the surrounding silicone.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"7 1","pages":"1551-1554"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89788270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Introducing PdO<sub>x</sub> clusters led to the increase of OH-groups concentration, while that of RuO<sub>y</sub> - to accumulation of active oxygen species on the SnO<sub>2</sub> surface. This interplay contributes to increased low-temperature CO-sensitivity of SnO<sub>2</sub>/PdO<sub>x</sub> and to high NH<sub>3</sub>-sensitivity of SnO<sub>2</sub>/RuO<sub>y</sub> at raised temperature. Cross-sensitivity tests to CO+NH<sub>3</sub> mixtures in air revealed the possibility to discriminate the reductive gases by modified SnO<sub>2</sub>-based sensors operated at appropriate temperature. The impact of different active sites to the selectivity improvement was estimated. In situ DRIFT studies indicated a key role of catalytic clusters in promoting selective SnO<sub>2</sub>/PdO<sub>x</sub>-CO and SnO<sub>2</sub>/RuO<sub>y</sub>-NH<sub>3</sub> interactions. Possible sensor signal formation processes were suggested regarding the modifiers catalytic action and their distinctive influence on tin dioxide active sites.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"74 1","pages":"799-802"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89898911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Au-Sn eutectic bonding process is achieved at 300°C with a bond pressure of 2 MPa by using a sealing alloy thickness less than 1.5 μm. The package pressure is characterized to be around 250 mTorr, without any getter activation. The remelting temperature of the Au-Sn bonding interface is measured by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and found to be around 280°C, verifying that the bonding is achieved at the desired eutectic composition (80% Au and 20% Sn), also confirmed by the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. The shear strengths of several packages are measured to be above 20 MPa, indicating a mechanically-strong bonding. The robustness of the packages is also tested by subjecting them to high temperature storage at 200°C for 24 hours, and no degradation is observed in the hermeticity of the packages at the end of this period.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"20 1","pages":"2187-2190"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89489879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All the models are with different diameters. The results based on density functional theory (DFT) have revealed that with the decrease of the diameter, the length of unit cell decreases, and Young's modulus changes bigger sharply as the diameter is small enough. For the piezoresistive properties, Si74 nanowires are more sensitive than the others under different strain conditions, and the piezoresistance coefficients have reached as much as 41.3×10-11Pa-1. However, the piezoresistance coefficients of Si122 and Si182, especially Si182, have changed little under different strain conditions. All these stem from the different kinds of the surface reconstructions and size effects. What's more, the distribution of the partial charge density has been calculated for the further investigation about the electrical properties of unpassivated Si nanowires.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"13 1","pages":"566-569"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85776202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These devices measure the flammable gas concentration via the heat produced by the catalysis of the gas by a heated catalytic coating. We propose the design and implementation of a readout system based on feedback heat pulses. In the proposed system, the heat of catalysis is directly measured via its compensation by a controlled feedback heat power. Contrary to that proposed sensor operation, previous potentiometric schemes would measure a sensor temperature increase resulting from the heat of catalysis. This proposed readout scheme for so-called “pellistor” sensors is expected to improve the measurement performance while providing a simpler implementation than previous systems.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"1212-1215"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85859159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
