The paper presents a brief overview of the Brazilian market design and discusses some emerging challenges of the industry. It is focused on aspects regarding the merger of sub-markets. Issues like locational price signals, market power, economic efficiency and management of transmission constraints are revisited to assess the effects of the merger for final consumers. Case studies have been performed and the results are discussed.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. As a result it is traditionally carried out without taking into account transmission constraints or considering them in a very simplified way. This approach is not adequate to address certain kind of problems such as cost-benefit studies of transmission interconnections in hydro systems or the study of spatial distributions of spot prices (\"zones\" identification) through the electric network, due to hydro and power flow constraints. In this paper we address the problem of stochastic optimization of large scale transmission constrained hydrothermal systems with applications to the Brazilian case.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. The most common PSS (CPSS) is based on the use of a linear transfer function designed by applying the linear control theory to the system model linearized at a pre-assigned operating point. Power systems are non-linear and operate over a wide range. Due to the non-linear characteristics, wide operating conditions and unpredictability of perturbations in a power system, the CPSS, a linear controller, generally cannot maintain the same quality of performance under all conditions of operation. To further improve the performance and stability of the power system, various other approaches using the linear quadratic optimal control, H-infinity, variable structure, rule base, and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been proposed in the literature to design a fixed parameter PSS. One common feature of all fixed parameter controllers is that the design is done off-line.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. This risk, which arises in low inflow seasons, can lead to high financial exposures of these agents in the spot market. The analysis will be carried out with the aid of optimization models. In particular the insertion of a thermal plant into the hydro portfolio will be analyzed. This asset can work as an insurance (or back-up) to the portfolio and provide significant risk reductions with the synergy among the energy sources in the new mix. Case studies will be presented with the Brazilian system, which is hydro based.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. First, models for dynamic studies are described, justifying simplifications that cannot be performed for other studies, such as power quality studies. Variable speed wind turbines (with doubly fed induction generator), very widely used nowadays, require also an adequate modelling of the control system, according to the time constants and integration step that are used in transient stability studies. Secondly, transient stability studies involving wind energy conversion systems are presented. These studies include fixed speed and variable speed devices, and several situations on the grid are considered. The results are compared and conclusions are drawn out from them. The problem of the required protections is addressed, in relation with the requirements of connection standards for wind energy conversion systems. These subjects are applied to the Spanish situation, where a great amount of wind penetration is foreseen for the next years.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. A general model of the integral controller has been developed for multiarea system having poolco, bilateral and mixed transactions employing fuzzy logic scheme for optimal tuning of integral gain. The area control error (ACE) signal and rate of change of the area control error (Che ACE) have been used as input to the fuzzy logic based controller. The functioning of the proposed fuzzy logic based controller has been demonstrated on a 75-bus Indian power system network and the results are compared with those obtained by using classical integral controller.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat. A tolling agreement is one such example in which the purchasing party (buyer) has the right to operate a power plant by paying a predetermined rent to the owner of the power plant. In addition, the buyer receives either the physical electricity by running self-supplied generating fuel through the plant or the financial settlement equalling the spread between the electricity price and the heat rate adjusted fuel price by simultaneously selling electricity and purchasing fuel in the market. An option pricing approach is proposed to value the tolling contracts incorporating major operating characteristics and contractual constraints. Dynamic programming (DP) and the Monte Carlo based least square approximation of the DP value function are employed in solving the problem. The effects of different power price models on the valuation of tolling contracts are examined as well.","PeriodicalId":131986,"journal":{"name":"2003 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting (IEEE Cat.
