However, many modern systems of systems are being developed to support interaction across multiple controlling authorities and existing techniques are proving to be inadequate for meeting the challenges of requirements engineering for systems of systems. This paper discusses some of these challenges, examines several existing techniques, and discusses how these techniques could be applied to engineer requirements for systems of systems.","PeriodicalId":131616,"journal":{"name":"2009 3rd Annual IEEE Systems Conference","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133461348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, decisions to adopt these technologies are difficult to justify, if not impossible. In turn, this devalues the return on investment of those who have funded the research and development of assurance-oriented technologies. In a recently launched project on software assurance, with specific focus on Systems of Systems (SoS) assurance, the SEI has begun characterizing and modeling interrelationships among organizations across the supply chain and the assurance technologies they fund, create and transition to multiple types of “consumers.” Taxonomies and an initial systems dynamics model describing organizations' roles in the “assurance supply chain” and technologies' assurance contribution have been developed. These can support investment and adoption decisions, even when the adopting organization and/or assurance technology is several degrees removed from the final system.","PeriodicalId":131616,"journal":{"name":"2009 3rd Annual IEEE Systems Conference","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131205705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multiscale methods combine the advantages of two levels of simulation, an atomistic and a coarse-grain one, with a small loss of performance. We designed a parallel implementation of this multiscale approach based on the improved parallel algorithms from the GROMACS MD simulator. The properties of the simulated systems were undisturbed and the errors were kept to a minimum. By having a parallel multiscale simulation, one can take advantage of a reduced simulation time by running it on multiple processors, and in the same time, access to both atomistic and macroscopic details is offered for a better understanding of the desired phenomenon.","PeriodicalId":131616,"journal":{"name":"2009 3rd Annual IEEE Systems Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131382558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modular systems made from a large number of modules can be formed various physical or logical topologies, consequently to achieve the capabilities to optimize their configurations to suit different applications. Although, modular concept will bring new scalable and extendable products for customers, it puts new requirements for the product development. Shift from tightly-coupled systems to service-oriented architecture will bring deep impact to the research and development of the modular embedded devices, applications and services, i.e. function elements can be easily added or removed without modifying the whole hardware and software of the systems. In this paper, we first discuss the opportunities, challenges and requirements for the modular mechatronic systems development, and then, present directions for loose-coupled modular devices based on service-oriented control architecture, in particular, this paper outlines the implementation of this architecture adopted by the Miniaturized Modular Devices project.","PeriodicalId":131616,"journal":{"name":"2009 3rd Annual IEEE Systems Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125118410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our research we start from a structured representation of requirements and components using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML), and based on specific set of rules written in Prolog, we partially automate the process of architecture design. This methodology is part of the Requirements-Driven Design Automation (RDDA) framework that we develop for component-based system development.","PeriodicalId":131616,"journal":{"name":"2009 3rd Annual IEEE Systems Conference","volume":"206 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126882682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a multi producer/consumer solution for predicting cargo demand of a specific airline in a given route and cargo load factor for its flight schedule. This solution considers each airline as a producer and the users of air cargo services as consumers, with each producer having no explicit communication with other producers /airlines. The solution can assist airlines to maximize the usage of available cargo capacity. A major airline often has 100 million pounds of weekly cargo lift capacity. With this volume of cargo, even the slightest improvement in the forecasting technique and cargo load factor is liable to have a major impact in overall savings, performance, and efficiency. Our model uses the weighted majority learning algorithm [1] with various predictors for predicting the future demand. Based on the predicted demand, available cargo capacity, and by applying various strategies, new cargo capacity plan is suggested, thereby improving the cargo load factor as well as the financial bottom line.","PeriodicalId":131616,"journal":{"name":"2009 3rd Annual IEEE Systems Conference","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126395029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In previous work [1] we introduced an integrated real options framework (IRF) that distinguishes among option mechanism and type. The mechanism is the enabler of the option, while the type refers to the flexibility provided by the option. The idea behind IRF is to use models of a system or enterprise as a coupled dependency structure matrix (C-DSM) in order to identify and value enablers and types of flexibility. In this paper, we first show how the distinction among mechanisms and types of options leads to the identification of some new “ilities”, such as optionability, that are relevant to the options identification problem. Second, we show that the semantics of a traditional dependency model does not allow for the representation and estimation of flexibility and optionability. Therefore, we extend the C-DSM model to a logical C-DSM that is capable of representing logical relations among dependencies. Finally, we present metrics for estimating flexibility and optionability from the logical C-DSM model. We discuss the results of applying these metrics to identify mechanisms and options in purchasing a swarm of uninhabited air vehicles.","PeriodicalId":131616,"journal":{"name":"2009 3rd Annual IEEE Systems Conference","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123570876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, there are few experimental tools that might contribute to the development of a theory of group decision-making by committees of technical experts. This research aims to fills this gap by providing tools based on computational linguistics algorithms that can analyze transcripts of multi-stakeholder decision-making entities. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration medical device approval committee panel meetings are used as a data source. Preliminary results show that unsupervised linguistic analyses can be used to produce a formal network representation of stakeholder interactions.","PeriodicalId":131616,"journal":{"name":"2009 3rd Annual IEEE Systems Conference","volume":"10 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132125488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
