Although previous studies have explored the use of figurative language in various materials, its use in commencement speeches based on the speaker’s professional background has not been investigated. This study used 20 commencement speeches as material to examine the differences in the use of the figurative language of entertainers and business people invited to speak at commencement ceremonies. The results revealed that figurative language is pervasive in commencement speeches; the more frequently used figure of speech types were metaphor, repetition, personification, and parallelism. Moreover, speakers from the entertainment industry significantly used more rhetorical questions, exclamations, and similes than those from the business industry. Entertainers tended to ask questions to get their audiences involved, express emotions to reveal their inner feelings, and adopt similes to produce vivid narrations. On the other hand, business people employed significantly fewer strategies to emphasize their authority and highlight their objectivity. The findings imply that there exist certain variations in how people from different professional backgrounds use language, and further studies are necessary to reveal more of these differences. In sum, the data show that figurative language may be used to achieve several goals; relevant findings might prove useful to English for Special Purposes practitioners and to language learners as well.","PeriodicalId":131541,"journal":{"name":"Journal of English and Applied Linguistics","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133845538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although most of the websites are fun and get students “hooked into the learning process,” the question that needs addressing is whether or not the use of websites actually results in increased and long-term vocabulary improvement for learners. This paper reports on our findings from four phases of an investigation that attempted to determine whether two vocabulary websites worked to increase our students’ academic vocabulary. The procedure and findings will be presented alongside each of the four phases this research evolved into. The presentation will discuss the results of a four-phase investigation on the efficacy of vocabulary websites in improving post-practice vocabulary test scores of students in a foreign studies university in Japan. The investigation mainly adopted statistical tools to determine whether the performance of students in consecutive post-practice tests actually improved. The findings revealed moderate gains in scores only in the initial phases for the groups. This research is relevant in that it adds to the body of literature investigating the efficacy of language learning websites in the acquisition and provides empirical data that support the use of websites in class. However, the results also challenge those of previous studies because the gains found were not fully sustained in most of the cases examined.","PeriodicalId":131541,"journal":{"name":"Journal of English and Applied Linguistics","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123431364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Utilizing the S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G Framework, similarities and differences were articulated through qualitative methods, and the analysis yielded four themes, including (a) degree of formality affecting the length of meetings, (b) adherence to roles and purpose of the meetings, (c) agenda, minutes versus “notes,” and (d) modes of interaction and communication. The study demonstrates the applicability of the Dell Hymes framework in the analysis of more current and industry-specific speech communities. Albeit limited in its scope as only meetings were analyzed, it opens more opportunities for further research, such as investigating other facets of the same speech communities or other areas of the medical and not-for-profit sectors. The study may have implications for using English for specific purposes, business communication, in the understanding of competencies of workers expected to join these types of communities, language learning, and applied linguistics in general.","PeriodicalId":131541,"journal":{"name":"Journal of English and Applied Linguistics","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123880669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Higher education institutions are aware that a means by which they can offer good quality education is by engaging in partnerships with international institutions. International linkages established by academic institutions have a wider reach such that teaching and learning, research, community, and extension programs may have an international flavor. In forging partnerships, institutions would sign an agreement called the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), which stipulates provisions expected from the parties involved. Employing the framework of Johnson and Coulthard (2010) on the linguistic features of legal documents, the study examined 20 local and international MOAs on academic partnerships. Findings revealed that seven out of the 11 linguistic features abound in the local MOAs. These are binomial expressions; generic/cognitive structuring; legal archaisms; modality; negators; sentence length and complexity; and specialized, distinctive, and technical legal lexis. For international MOAs, only four out of the 11 linguistic features were found to be notable. These are generic/cognitive structuring, modality, negators, and sentence length and complexity. These features were found to occur at least 50 times or more in the contracts, which may cause ambiguity to the readers. Finally, with the dearth of studies using agreements as corpus, it is recommended that other types of agreement be examined, such as non-disclosure agreement, cooperative agreement, confidentiality agreement, intellectual property assignment agreement, among others. Other linguistic features may also be investigated, such as lexical repetition, formulaic expressions, French words and Latinisms, syntactic discontinuities, performative verbs, and euphemisms.","PeriodicalId":131541,"journal":{"name":"Journal of English and Applied Linguistics","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126100910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over a century since and through many socioeconomic developments and national language policies, English continues to thrive as the official second language. Given its privileged status as the medium of instruction alongside Filipino, it is often regarded as the language for upward social mobility and as a source of linguistic and social capital, which is instrumental in improving the socioeconomic plight of many Filipinos. Based on two data sets collected in 2017, this paper investigates Cebuand Manila-based Filipino university students’ (N=60) attitudes toward and conceptualization of English relative to other (local) languages in their repertoire. Revisiting and employing Kachru’s functional nativeness framework, this paper employs a critical thematic analysis of students’ responses to a sociodemographic survey to investigate the range of domains the students assign their languages to, the attitudes they hold that engender such linguistic choice, and explore the depth of penetration of English in those domains. In doing so, the study shows that participants’ linguistic choices are largely motivated by a strong sense of ownership and identity associated with all the languages in their repertoire. In addition, and significantly important, there is hardly a view of English in rigid, binary terms. This study contributes to the broader discussion and understanding of the sociolinguistics of English language ownership in multilingual societies like the Philippines.","PeriodicalId":131541,"journal":{"name":"Journal of English and Applied Linguistics","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121147095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Albeit the accumulating evidence shows how the condition affects people with TS, there appears to be a lack of studies that attempt to determine the advantages of children with TS, especially their phonological strengths. Informed by the innateness theory and biological determinism theory, this experimental research pursues to identify the phonological strengths of individuals with TS. Specifically, the analysis seeks to identify the phonemes uttered accurately and inaccurately by the three respondents. The study utilized Children’s Nonword Repetition (CNRep) as its instrument. The respondents repeated the nonwords from CNRep, and the accuracy of the utterances was analyzed. The results showed that the children with TS have phonological strengths and weaknesses, influenced by their motor and phonic tics. The respondents also displayed a fast response rate, which is believed to be the effect of the tics in the basal ganglia region. The findings reveal that they do not differ from typically-developing children as the study also proved that they also have innate mechanisms in phonological utterances.","PeriodicalId":131541,"journal":{"name":"Journal of English and Applied Linguistics","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116698368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pragmatically, this also gives an array of information about their cultural contexts to understand the marketing strategies of those who are in the inner and outer circles in Kachru’s model. This study used a self-collected corpus of 30 American and 30 Filipino online selling advertisements on Facebook Marketplace. These advertisements were analyzed using the speech act theory. A descriptive method of analysis was also conducted to determine emojis/emoticons, recurring punctuation marks, and symbols. The findings highlighted that the common speech act patterns between the two are assertive (A), directive-assertive (DA), directive (D), assertivedirective (AD), and assertive-expressive (AE). All these patterns are evident in the American advertisements, which convey that Filipino online sellers are also exposed and follow the Western format. Expressive patterns that promote rapport and relationships are also evident in Filipino online selling advertisements. The language of advertising continues to evolve, and the emotions and the culture are given significance.","PeriodicalId":131541,"journal":{"name":"Journal of English and Applied Linguistics","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127177682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 60 seventh-grade students, initially categorized under the frustration-reading level from a public junior high school in Cotabato City, were invited to participate in this experimental research. The students completed the effort-ability and mindset surveys to group them based on their belief in the effort-ability relationship and their mindset on reading abilities. Next, they answered three reading comprehension tests with varying levels of difficulty. After getting a passing score on the first reading test, the students in both groups (inverse rule group with fixed mindset = 27, positive rule group with growth mindset = 19) were praised for their effort by their teacher. The analysis from the independent samples t-test revealed that struggling readers with a growth mindset in the positive rule group significantly performed better in the reading tests than those with a fixed mindset in the inverse rule group after receiving effort praise from their teacher. In addition, results from the Pearson product-moment correlation showed a significant positive relationship between the mindset and the reading performance of the ESL struggling readers. It implies that when students have a growth mindset, they will most likely have an increased reading performance. Conversely, students with a fixed mindset will most likely have an impaired reading performance.","PeriodicalId":131541,"journal":{"name":"Journal of English and Applied Linguistics","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134584170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
