The simulator consists of a custom 4DOF haptic device for tracking and force feedback. The built device can simulate the kinematic behaviour of the files during endodontic surgery. During the simulation, the movements the user does with the manual files are tracked and at the end are displayed by a custom-made visualization tool. This tool shows the forces applied during the procedures, the direction and the amplitude of the movements and the final result of the tooth preparation. Preliminary tests showed that the level of realism of the simulator is satisfactory and the visualization tool allows for obtaining relevant data for a qualitative analysis of the procedures performed on the tooth.","PeriodicalId":131267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122405417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we want to extend such studies in order to analyze both cybersickness and the sense of presence for some INAV techniques. A review of the state of the art shows that there is no agreement if enhancing movement (i.e. reducing the sensory conflicts between mechanical and visual information) or restricting movement (i.e. limiting the postural control) is better to reduce cybersickness. Furthermore, the kind of movement used in an experience has different implications in the sense of presence. Although we did not find statistically significant results from these new studies, we show how techniques that reduce vection promise to reduce cybersickness and their impact to the sense of presence for INAV.","PeriodicalId":131267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI)","volume":"254 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122462627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We introduce a novel 3D user interface to play songs on virtual bottles. For this purpose the user blows into a microphone and the stream of air is recreated in the virtual environment and redirected to virtual bottles she is pointing to with her fingers. This is easy to learn and subsequently opens up opportunities for quickly switching between bottles and playing groups of them together to form complex melodies. Furthermore, our interface enables the customization of the virtual environment, by means of moving bottles, changing their type or filling level.","PeriodicalId":131267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133695534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This enables a whole class of mixed reality applications and interaction paradigms, where the user is able to move freely around the scene and to perform tasks involving the interplay between physical and virtual objects. The accuracy and ergonomics of such tasks strongly depend on the ability of the subjective display system to offer not only a convincing 3D visual experience, but also, and mostly, an accurate rendering of the virtual scene in terms of spatial and metric relations between virtual and physical scene components. In this paper we study the role and impact of head tracking and stereo visualization in mixed reality contexts using a set of measuring tasks involving physical rulers and virtual objects, performed under different rendering conditions. Specifically, we analyze to what extent the two features contribute to give the user the correct alignment between the virtual and the real components of a 3D scene. Finally, we draw some conclusions about their impact within different scenarios.","PeriodicalId":131267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134577403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A prototype system of VisuaLift Studio consists of an elevator, an acceleration sensor, a microcontroller, a laptop PC, and a head-mounted display (HMD). The experiment demonstrates that it is possible to control the perceived direction of the elevator by providing optical flow through the HMD (visual stimulus), regardless of the real direction of the elevator (physical stimulus). On the other hand, comparing the intensity of subjective movement between the case of visual and physical stimuli and the case of only visual stimulus, the former exhibits significantly stronger sensation of movement, even in the case where the directions of both stimuli are inconsistent.","PeriodicalId":131267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124943797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To access, all the digital information is left behind a screen. The work of ours, in this paper, looks into the possibility of whether this digital information can be brought out of the screen and be interacted with, as if with a real object. In this paper we present a novel, 360-degree viewable 3D display which not only enables the user to visualize 3D content, but also facilitates 3D interactions and other interesting possibilities for more advanced applications. Two such applications, navigation through maps and application in the field of medicine are also presented in the paper. The display system is an `immaterial' fog display which exploits the property of directional scattering of light by fog. Using multiple projectors, different perspectives of a 3D scene/object can be projected and viewed on the screen, making it an auto stereoscopic 3D display. The depth sensor in combination with the display enables 2D and 3D interactions by the users, with the objects on the screen that appear floating in air.","PeriodicalId":131267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122778747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because active locomotion plays a role in spatial perception, cooperative viewpoint control may impact perceived distances. Additionally, the center of projection is generally optimized for a single tracked user, meaning that a single action will result in different visual feedback for each user. We describe a study investigating the effect of a co-located cooperative locomotion interface on virtual distance perception. Results indicate that a slight center-of-projection offset did affect distance estimates for the untracked user, but that the cooperation actions themselves did not play a role. This study brings new insights to designing interfaces which facilitate accurate spatial perception in cooperative applications.","PeriodicalId":131267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126690045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, a prototypical application was developed, which superimposes the current view of the user's hands on the virtual scene in real-time. This is achieved in form of a captured video stream. Advantages compared to virtual avatars arise from the detailed and individual representation of the user's body and the saving of complex tracking hardware. Due to the integration of a toolbox, the visual appearance of the video overlay is highly customizable.","PeriodicalId":131267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124273300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
