Blogs allow corporations to connect with their stakeholders in a more personal way and thus strengthen their image, brand, and customer loyalty. Comments posted on the corporate blog provide instant feedback, saving these organizations large sums of money otherwise spent on market research. In todaypsilas information economy, it is essential that corporations take advantage of all the new media vehicles, including blogs, to keep up with current market trends and to maintain a competitive advantage. However, for a corporation, blogging poses a number of perils and pitfalls, such as potential damage to the corporate reputation and customer loyalty, as well as legal liability. Conflicts still exist between the First Amendment rights of bloggers and corporationspsila interests. Blogs may be restricted by legal and ethical boundaries to which corporations must abide. This paper presents both the benefits and risks associated with corporate blogging, and provides some interesting examples of success stories, as well as lessons learned. It also offers a compilation of guidelines for effective blogging and suggests topics for future research.","PeriodicalId":131068,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"638 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133467529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In some developing countries like the Ivory Coast, it plays in addition to its general function, an original and major productive and social function. In fact, the advent of the mobile telephony has quickly constituted a new source of informal activities for the economies of these countries that traditionally function on the basis of dualism (formal and informal sectors). Although not complying with any formal administrative requirement, technically easy to implement and spatially very flexible to practice, the economic model issued from this activity has radically changed the mobile telecommunication sector in the Ivory Coast. This particularly dynamic sector generates numerous small jobs and substantial revenue for all persons exercising it. This article not only explains factors responsible for its emergence, but also describes the mechanism of its functioning as well as its economic, social and geographic implications.","PeriodicalId":131068,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130913619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, established project management procedures come from a functional setting, such as engineering, where links between time, design and production are clearly defined. Multimedia project management guidelines, in turn, usually encircle a somewhat more creative path through development and production, leaving room for more richly developed media that takes more time to create. Online multimedia production offers more time for creative idea development, increased prototyping and testing, and a longer time span for changes to be made. The online multimedia production process offers typical phases like planning, design, development, testing, and delivery, but usually manages production in a more open and creative manner - which in turn makes the creation and management of multimedia just a little more difficult from traditional projects. This paper will explore the project management of online multimedia products and how it differs from traditional project management.","PeriodicalId":131068,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116276727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, many industries require innovative strategic leaders with solid theoretical and research grounding. Such leaders draw on their education and experience to develop strategically aligned technical communication practices for specific domains and industries. What opportunities are available for industry professionals to pursue advanced degrees while continuing to work in the field? We examined 267 masterpsilas and PhD-level programs in technical communication and related disciplines worldwide to determine if these programs were accessible to professionals seeking to further their education and careers. This research indicates that some graduate programs reach a wider demographic through greater flexibility and technological investments. Nevertheless, our research revealed potential gaps in the availability of PhD educational opportunities for industry professionals who must work full time while attending school. We identified opportunities to close these gaps through expanded distance learning, changes in residency requirements, improved international articulation, and alternatives to dissertations. This paper describes the research methodology used, the current state of graduate and PhD educational opportunities available for industry professionals, the challenges we encountered during our research, and additional research opportunities.","PeriodicalId":131068,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127203385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Team leaders have many responsibilities and face many challenges. Leaders must provide structure for team members and find ways to personalize virtual work relationships. Often, leaders of virtual teams are also charged with the responsibility of media selection and of helping team members adapt to the technologies being used for virtual collaboration. Studies of leadership can be roughly divided into two categories: 1) studies that examine the behaviors of practitioners charged with leading virtual teams in the workplace; and 2) research conducted with students participating in virtual team projects. This study examines a client-based virtual team collaboration between students at the University of Limerick (UL) in Limerick, Ireland and students at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, Florida, USA. This paper focuses on our analysis of designated and emergent leaders during the project.","PeriodicalId":131068,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference","volume":"180 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116918040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
