Its benefits include an increase in reliability due to its reduced number of switches, at cost of an increased DC bus voltage. An important step of the SSC implementation is the design of the DC voltage distribution ratio across the three DC bus sections in this converter, although it is not clear in the literature the freedom for setting these values, denominated voltage coefficients, nor the way to improve the DC bus utilization with fixed offset values. This paper presents some guidelines to establish DC bus voltage coefficients and introduces a new method to improve the DC bus utilization. Among its usages, it has been used for power factor (PF) correction in view of its use for AC motor driving. However, the examples in the literature are restricted to motors in the absence of speed control. Therefore, this paper analyzes the operation of a squirrel-cage induction motor (SCIM) connected to the grid through an NSC so that the grid-side control allows changes in power factor while motor-side control is able to set the SCIM speed. Over time, new paradigms based on remote and virtual laboratories, allowing to share resources, have been adopted to address these problems. But these approaches lose their efficacy when equipment reached obsolescence. One way to address this problem would rely on an approach, which could enable reusing existing robotics equipment, aiding it with new functionalities. This could be done by developing a remote laboratory platform with the ability to regenerate the functionality of existing robots. Using this strategy, robotics resources can be combined with software components that allow their enhancement with more sophisticated functionality. With this platform, students can use the equipment with new features.
