The paper argues that this is partly due to ongoing challenges linked with integrating the needs of a tourism industry management perspective with those of wildlife resources planning, in particular when the diversity and distinctiveness of wildlife tourism destination types is acknowledged. The paper uses the findings emanating from the recent wildlife tourism literature (in particular on the nature of motivations of tourists participating in wildlife viewing experiences) to examine the basis for destination competitiveness in that area, and to investigate ensuing planning challenges. Subsequently, the paper examines a simple case study (wildlife-viewing in the Top End of the Northern Territory of Australia) where knowledge integration issues for wildlife tourism planning have been explicitly tackled with a Geographic Information System (GIS) approach.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132994748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, tourism forecasting and planning are vital in maintaining and managing this flow of visitors. Hence, it is imperative for policymakers in both the public and private tourism sectors in Egypt to examine tourist arrival patterns, and to generate forecasts for the industry. The objective of this paper is to forecast the performance of the tourism industry in Egypt until the year 2017. The main factors affecting such performance are the deficiency in exploiting human capital efficiently, ineffective marketing campaigns, and lack of strategies to enhance Egypt's image. This study examines the aggregate tourism demand function for Egypt using the time series data for the period 1982–2006. An Auto Regressive Moving Average (ARMA) model is applied as an efficient tool to forecast the future values of dependent variables (international tourism arrivals and revenues); and its relationship with the above-mentioned independent ones, until the year 2017.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127845427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analytical focus is boundary work, i.e. how boundaries separating nature/culture, rural/urban, local/global, history/present/future, humans/non-humans and indoor/outdoor are (dis)ordered to form a visitor attraction. Boundary work is examined in five instances of nature construction: interviews with strategic and operative staff connected to the nature centre, an application for state funding of the centre, the ceremonial opening of the centre, market communication material and the centre's permanent exhibition. The analysis shows how the nature centre manifests a nature cosmology upheld by alternate purifying and hybridizing practices, where the result is a visitor attraction offering ecology as experience.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122586224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines the evolution and current status of tourism planning in a developing region―Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China. Local tourism planning has focused on economic priorities with little concern about carrying capacities and negative impacts on local communities. Deficiencies in the planning approaches to tourism development include a shortage of human resources and funds for planning; lack of collaboration among government agencies, between the government and the private sector, between planning institutions and the tourism sector, and among tourism planners; political barriers; lack of community participation and limited input from various stakeholders; lack of effective monitoring, evaluation and supervision; and lack of understanding of the significance of tourism planning. These issues need to be addressed in order to achieve long-term successful tourism development. More efficient and effective planning should be undertaken to mitigate negative impacts and promote sustainable tourism development.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115580189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whilst numerous studies examined how tourism impacts on destinations and how local residents view tourism, there is a paucity of studies looking specifically at how religious tourism and tourists affect local residents living in “holy or sacred” destinations. This paper seeks to fill that gap in the literature by examining the perceptions of local residents of the socio-economic impacts of religious tourism on the island of Tinos, Greece. Data was collected through a questionnaire survey amongst local residents. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of residents welcome religious tourists to the island and perceive the socio-economic impacts as positive. Differences in perceptions were found on the basis of religiousness measured as frequency of church attendance and age of residents. Furthermore, the study found that whilst religious tourists are perceived as being different from “ordinary” tourists and are seen as similar to the residents themselves, they are not necessarily preferred to non-religious tourists. Overall, there is strong evidence that economic considerations override other concerns by local residents. The paper suggests management and development strategies for developing other forms of tourism on the island, whilst maintaining its role as religious site.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114277561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The variety of touristic resources per se is not a guarantee of a successful tourism industry. Over 60% of Russian territory is occupied by the north, an out-of-the-way land of natural and cultural extremes. Evidently, the notion of northern tourism requires a new approach to producing tourism products. The present-day shift “from consumption to experience” (Pine and Gilmore, 2005) entails a need to create a multi-focus “production team”. This paper presents the author's findings obtained within the framework of a major research project undertaken by a group of Master's degree students at the Ural State Academy of Architecture and Arts, Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2005–2007 with the aim of exploring the touristic potential of the Western-Siberian north. The study is about the potential input of design professionals into the tourism industry and is an attempt to take an external look at interdisciplinary cooperation. More specifically, the aim of this paper is to present a hypothetical model of touristic transport network developed by designers.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128842095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, despite this importance, relatively little is known about the extent, nature and determinants of training in hospitality firms in regional Australia. Restaurants in particular have proven hard to analyse because many are what the Australian Bureau of Statistics calls micro-businesses who employ less than five staff, or are small businesses with five to twenty employees, and have little in the way of training resources and expertise in the area. An examination of six restaurants in Northern New South Wales identified that medium sized boutique operations owned and managed by operators with a passion for fine food and service had training policies that were more extensive than larger organisations such as resorts even though the latter often had a higher star rating. It was apparent that organisational size and resources had more of an effect on the adoption of formal training strategies such as induction and the establishment and provision of a formal training manual.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"825 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133279840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper includes the growth and development of marine wildlife tourism with an emphasis on the region as well as further development of marine wildlife-based sustainable management practices. This also involves a detailed discussion of the practices aboard the enterprise Imagine Cruises, and the visitor experience in attempting to provide best environmental practices and in turn offer positive wildlife and environmental management tactics in contributing in the short term to the sustainability of the dolphin and whale watch industry which operates within the bay and the coastal and marine areas of Port Stephens. The historical development of marine-based and land-based sustainable management policies and practices in Port Stephens are examined in the paper, in a region which has rapidly become a major tourism destination based on abundance of cetacean wildlife, natural attributes and proximity to Sydney, Australia. Through the case review of the historical development of the Port Stephens environment, wildlife conservation and the focus on preservation of the rich natural resources of the region coupled with the advancement and implementation of sustainable policies and practices in nature-based wildlife tourism and especially the cetacean tourism industry, these can be conveyed as factors of importance in the further development of sustainable marine wildlife practices regionally, nationally and potentially influencing decision making on an international level.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"15 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129694644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
