His research interests lie in the areas of: Destination master planning with a focus on the interaction between local social structures (including pro-poor tourism measures); Tourism and small island destinations (special problems of impacts on social structures); Changing nature of tourism consumption (tourists’ responses to globalisation and consumerism); and tourism in the Arab world. He has published widely, and his latest book on tourism and anthropology has been a particular success. His consulting work has encompassed many regions of the world in some 30 countries working for a variety of institutions including the European Union and United Nations.
