Abstract

Peter M. Burns, PhD, MA, MEd, FRGS, is Professor and Director of the Centre for Tourism Policy Studies at the University of Brighton, UK. His research interests lie in the areas of: Destination master planning with a focus on the interaction between local social structures (including pro-poor tourism measures); Tourism and small island destinations (special problems of impacts on social structures); Changing nature of tourism consumption (tourists’ responses to globalisation and consumerism); and tourism in the Arab world. He has published widely, and his latest book on tourism and anthropology has been a particular success. His consulting work has encompassed many regions of the world in some 30 countries working for a variety of institutions including the European Union and United Nations. He is a member of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s Education Council.
