To achieve the public health goal of “collective action for sustained population-wide health improvement”, the ability to measure and monitor health indices of communities and populations is very important. The Sri Lankan public health system has been exemplary among developing countries and the system is well established. Yet the growing population, increased awareness and new health needs of the community have placed a great burden on the current public health system. Re-engineering of the current information system with incorporation of an Electronic Information System can be a solution for the difficulties faced by public the health staff. In this paper, I propose to present a conceptual framework and design for an Electronic Public Health Information System. The design was made by studying the current paper based system and other practical aspects of the system. Information was gathered from field staff, middle level managers and central administrative staff. The proposed system is designed to represent all aspects of the Sri Lankan Public Health System with the ability for integration with other systems. The aim of this study was to assess the computer literacy and attitudes towards e-learning among second year medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo (n=138) using a self administered, anonymous questionnaire. Results showed that 93.5% of students owned a computer and 95% of them had internet connection. Use of Microsoft Office ® applications was high (90%), along with online communication tools (73.5%). Using ICT for educational purposes was low (51.7%). Use of popular Web 2.0 tools such as Facebook (89.1%), Wikipedia (87.6%), and YouTube (74.4%) was high. There was a significant difference between gender in the use of blogs (P Commonly accessed online learning materials were text (82.3%) and images (81.7%). Advantages of online learning materials have been recorded as being more accessible (89.5%), descriptive (85.7%) and easily searchable (88.1%). Awareness of the faculty Moodle platform was low among students (65.7%), as well as usage (32.7%) and 94.7% of students preferred supplementary learning material to be incorporated in the Moodle platform. This study shows that medical students have access to computers and other facilities required for e-learning and a positive attitude towards e-learning. However, the use of computers for learning purposes was low. This highlights the need for guidance on the use of available resources for e-learning. Design, setting and sample: Third year physiotherapy students in the department of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya. Measurements: A 15 item, self-administered questionnaire with a five point Likert scale was used. Results: The response rate was 75% (24 out of 32). Seventy nine per cent of students agreed that it promotes critical thinking. A majority of students felt that, the PBL sessions were better at fulfilling learning objectives, gave better factual knowledge of musculoskeletal physiotherapy was enjoyable and ensured team work. Most of the students’ indicated that more such sessions should be organised in the future. The main disadvantage perceived was that it was time-consuming. Conclusion : The results of this study showed that, third year physiotherapy students’ perception of problem based learning sessions in musculoskeletal physiotherapy was positive. Thus it can be used as a teaching learning strategy. Derived from the term web log, blog is a method of posting entries to a specific URL. Initially used for text entry, blogs have now evolved into interactive and multimedia rich posts of information which can be maintained using various devices. While the existing methods of communication between the student and the supervisor such as official letters, telephone conversations, face to face meetings, and online meetings are being practiced there are problems of using these multiple methods over a longer period of time because of the difficulties in maintaining a chronological order, cataloguing minutes of meetings and excess paperwork. It may question the supervisory role of consultants and address the affective domain of learning. Blogs seem to give significant advantages in organising activities of a research project as well as aid in reflective learning. A survey of scientific literature shows active use of blogs in both medical teaching and training and as an aid to reflective learning. A blog was maintained for 40 weeks between September 2010 and July 2011 by a student of the MSc in Biomedical Informatics course which was overseen by two supervisors. In the course of maintaining a blog, its use as a tracking tool and reflective learning medium was evident. It can then be concluded that a blog can be seen as a useful aide in tracking student progress in a Biomedical Informatics course and has potential to be used in other medical disciplines as an adjunct to portfolio. Taking cognizance of the potential of ‘Online Learning’, the OUSL offered an online CME course on cardiovascular health for physicians. The course purchased from Monash University, Australia was updated and adapted to suit the Sri Lankan context. The course which was available in print format was converted into an online format on the learning management system ‘Moodle’. While designing the online format, the course was enriched by using audio visual material, discussion forums, self assessment activities and an online reflective journal. Online assessments included a variety of assessment methods. The course team functioned as tutor mentors to facilitate learning. All learners (n=21) participated in the evaluation of the course by completing an online questionnaire. The questionnaire had 16 closed questions and seven open ended questions. Responses to the closed questions were gathered on a four point Likert scale. Frequencies were computed for closed questions and content analysis was carried out for open-ended questions. Learners perceived interactive and collaborative learning as the most liked features. They agreed that the audiovisual material enriched the course and that sessions were well structured, easy to understand and interesting. Some disliked essays and reflective writing while others suggested more interaction and audio-visual material to improve the course. Problems faced by learners were mainly of a technical nature. Finally, learners expressed an overall satisfaction with the course and thought that online learning was a rewarding experience. Learner evaluation showed that pedagogy, social environment and technical underpinning should be properly utilised in optimising learning in an online learning environment. The course had provided an enjoyable, satisfying and useful experience for physicians who lack the opportunity of undergoing face to face CME. Various enactments were added to improve the system with the aim of making the registration complete. However, issues relating to the quality and timeliness of the information remain, which indeed minimise the usefulness of the cause of death information though demands exponentially increase, particularly for health sector planning. Digital scanning of basic documents relating to cause of death and transmitting it digitally to the central vital statistics unit for the processing was thought to be a low cost technology and was expected to reduce human errors. 33 document scanning centres were established island-wide. The scanned documents were transmitted digitally to the vital statistics unit at central level for coding, processing and reporting. Qualitative assessment showed that this system reduced the processing time and minimised erroneous reporting. This system facilitates digital storing and transferring; thus reducing the fear of loss or damage to the physical documents.
