The problem has not received due attention yet and is insufficiently studied. Due to this fact, there is a wide range of different modal meanings. The article presents the results of analysis of various modal meanings found in Russian and foreign (especially western) linguistics. With description method, the main meanings of modality are shown. The purpose of the article is to determine the influence of the cognitive substrate of Russian speakers’ linguistic thinking on the structure and semantics of their English-language speech. Methodology. In the course of the study methods of observation, psycholinguistic experiment, comparison of authentic and inauthentic English texts, and quantitative methods were used. Results. Methodically such works combine hypothetico-deductive method and component analysis that was proposed by O. N. Selivyorstova. The goal of the investigations is to find out differential features and describe them in explanatory dictionaries. Translation dictionaries can benefit from found features as well. Moreover, visual representation of the researched semantic features can be beneficial in translation. An example of this type of entry including schemes, pictures, tables, etc. is shown in the article.
