The System Dynamics (SD) method and the Vensim simulation language are applied in order to solve specific managerial problems described by Forrester in the model of supply chain. The historical model of Customer-Producer-Employment System by Forrester (Forrester, 1961) has not been examined with the sensitivity analysis, from the “automatic” testing perspective. Optimization experiments have not been conducted, either. It is surprising, since the model is old and widely known. The opportunities offered by the Vensim language allow us to perform such analysis. The visualization called “confidence bounds“ is used, to show the behaviour of chosen variables over a period of time. The Monte-Carlo method is applied for sampling a set of numbers from within bounded domains (distribution for each searching parameters is specified). The authors of this paper conducted numerous experiments in this scope. This paper presents their results and offers some conclusions formulated at the end.

This discussion paper analyses the context in which cross-sector partners (pharmaceutical manufacturers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and local health institutions) can work together to give beneficiaries access to medicines donated by manufacturers in emergencies and non-emergencies. These cross-sector partners need to be aware of all stakeholders and ethical dilemmas that a medicine donation may pose. In an effort to address medicine donations under a holistic approach for the first time, we identify four factors that hinder supply chain performance: problematic assessment of demand, opaque supplies for donations, lack of funds for medicine distribution, and fuzzy communication among partners. We describe how partners in supply chains of medicine donations can tackle these issues by (a) setting up new or managing existing partnerships, (b) mapping current supply chains in emergencies and non-emergencies, and (c) managing a harmonized supply chain through transparent end-to-end flows. Once partners apply these design elements, they will make a step forward in ensuring that donations are needs-driven and based on an understanding of local cultures.

Therefore, this paper aims to study sustainable supply chain practices and its implementation in Indian manufacturing firms through a case-based research. \u0000Design/Methodology/Approach: The method that used in this article is ‘case-based research’. In other words, multiple cases are being selected to perform in-depth investigation and to draw conclusions for possible managerial implications. \u0000Findings: Using triple bottom line approach of sustainability, it is found that majority of firms considered in this study practice or addressed the following issues: Social responsibility, concept of R’s, minimization of ecological foot print, elimination of waste in packaging, green initiatives, reduction of GHG, reduction of emissions. \u0000Research Limitations: It is one of the limitations that this study does not use empirical research methods or sophisticated software-based tools to put forward some holistic views, which should improve current sustainable supply chain practices in emerging-markets. \u0000Practical Implications: This article would help new researchers who want to pursue case-based research in operations management and manufacturing systems. Thus, it would be a guide for scholars in Asia and other developing countries. \u0000Originality/Value: The originality is that it uses the findings of sustainability reports and other secondary data published by firms, which are a measure of significant contribution while implementing the concept of sustainability.

Focusing on the adjustment of working-capital financing, we find two pieces of supporting evidence from international firm-level panel data covering the period 2002 :I–2012 :IV. First, for industries where specific investment in the input supplier-customer relationship is large, firms are more exposed to credit-market shocks. We find that measures of global credit-market shocks are negatively associated with trade receivables, trade payables, and inventories, conditional on the level of contract intensity in the industries where firms operate. Second, firms in emerging markets are more vulnerable to credit-market shocks than are firms in developed countries. We are also able to verify the economic significance of sales growth, operating cash flows, cash stock, and firm size in the overall adjustment. Our findings highlight the importance of balance-sheet contagion along supply chains during the 2007–09 global financial crisis.

In addition, the adoption of the drug approval-patent linkage system, following the implementation of the Korea-US and Korea-EU FTAs, could lead to the deterioration of the profitability in Korean pharmaceutical companies.Of the many risks that Korea’s pharmaceutical industry is facing, this study began out of the concerns over the possibility of the entrance into the Korean market by the Indian pharmaceutical firms. With the Korea-India CEPA, which became effective as of 2010, the possibility of the influx of cheap Indian pharmaceutical products into Korea is a potential risk factor to Korea’s pharmaceutical industry with a high level of dependence on the domestic market and generic drugs. India’s pharmaceutical industry is a 16 billion-dollar industry (with 1.5% of the world's market share) and as of 2011, it is the world's 12th largest in terms of sales. In particular, it has been showing a remarkable double-digit growth rate since the start of the new millennium. Such growth rate far surpasses India’s overall economic growth rate and it has been demonstrating sustainable growth despite the recent economic downturn. When compared to Korea’s pharmaceutical industry (ranked 13th in 2011, with 1.4% of the world's market share), the Indian market was smaller than Korea in terms of size. However, as of 2009, India’s pharmaceutical industry has surpassed that of Korea, and the gap continues to grow. Notably, in terms of production quantity of generic drugs, India has about a 20% share of the world’s market. India has the most number of FDA-approved production facilities outside of the U.S., and its pharmaceutical industry has a substantially superior competitive edge as compared to its other industries. Four of the country’s pharmaceutical companies are ranked among the top 100 in the world. When this is considered in light of the fact that none of Korea’s pharmaceutical companies are among the world's top 100, one can gauge the level of competitiveness of India's pharmaceutical industry.

Although being environmentally rich, such class of rural or tribal eco-communities and their people are often devoid of supplies of adequate Physical, Social, Economic, and Technological resources and are forced to struggle on a daily basis to survive and are unable to cope with any additional stress factors like population growth and abject poverty. In this regard, sustainable humanitarian supply chain practice and community based resource management can collectively promote more resilient communities promoting social, economic and environmental equity and ethical imperatives for sustainable community development. Apart from providing immediate relief assistance at the occurrence of natural disasters, what is more critical is their long term capacity building with a holistic perspective. This is also vital to enhance the effectiveness and speed of community response to major humanitarian programs, such as health, food, shelter, water, sanitation and employment. In this study, an attempt has been made to develop a system dynamics model of humanitarian supply chain in order to capture causal dynamics and inter linkages within the system under investigation and suggest some critical intervention strategies for enhancing overall performance. In this study, an economic sub-sector base model for the Indian tribal communities has been calibrated and used for simulation analysis as a reference case-study. The key motivation to select tribal regions for our model was that the various humanitarian measures undertaken under India Eco-Development Project (IEP) by the Indian government are not able to meet the intended objectives.

Increasing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, lignite, oil, and natural gas for electricity generation is currently the most significant driver of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change. If produced under sustainable conditions, solid biomass can offer a potential path to addressing climate change by substituting fossil fuels and reducing GHG emissions. On the other hand, if produced and procured in an unsustainable manner, the use of biomass for electricity production can actually lead to an increase in CO2 emissions and thus have a negative overall climate effect. The production of solid biomass for electricity generation also carries with it several other social and environmental risks related to issues such as forest degradation, loss of biodiversity, land tenure/rights violations, and human rights abuses. Detailed knowledge about the origin of the supply of solid biomass used for electricity generation is thus essential for determining whether biomass-based electricity generation is genuinely contributing to sustainable development.Given the potential direct and indirect social and environmental impacts of solid biomass production, it is crucial that civil society, regulators, consumers and companies themselves have sufficient and specific information about from where the biomass entering the Netherlands one of the worlds largest consumers of biomass comes: where it is produced, what the feedstock is, and who is responsible for importing it. The question From whence (i.e. from where) the wood? has never been more relevant. This report aims to improve the social and environmental conditions under which solid biomass is produced. By examining the degree of biomass supply chain transparency provided by the six largest individual consumers of solid biomass for electricity generation in the Netherlands electric utilities E.ON, Eneco, EPZ (DELTA), GDF Suez, RWE/Essent, and Vattenfall/Nuon the report aims to increase the public and political pressure on electricity companies to take responsibility for ensuring that minimum social and environmental standards are respected throughout the biomass supply chain.

The preliminary announcement on 'Act on support for return of overseas Korean firms' was made in July 2012. This so-called 'U-turn Bill' created a legal platform for overseas Korean wishing to return to Korea. Meanwhile, Korean free trade agreements with the European Union and the United States have officially went into effect in June 2011 and March 2012. The two FTAs marked a turning point in the overall trade environment of Korea, which enabled Korean firms to benefit from tariff elimination, of up to 100%, on export goods to the EU and the U.S. markets. In light of the above circumstances, this research was designed to review the present U-turn policy and make suggestions on policy priorities. We contrast the contracting outcome of a Stackelberg game, in which the manufacturers offer take-it-or-leave-it contracts to the retailers, with that of a bargaining game, in which the firms bilaterally negotiate contract terms via a process of alternating offers. The manufacturers in the Stackelberg game possess a Stackelberg-leader advantage in that the retailers are not entitled to make counteroffers. Our analysis suggests that whether this advantage would benefit the manufacturers depends on the contractual form. With simple contracts such as wholesale-price contracts, which generally do not allow one party to fully extract the trade surplus, the Stackelberg game replicates the boundary case of the bargaining game with the manufacturers possessing all bargaining power. In contrast, with sophisticated contracts such as two-part tariffs, which enable full surplus extraction, the two games lead to distinct outcomes. We further show that the game structure being Stackelberg or bargaining critically affects firms’ preferences over contract types and thus their equilibrium contract choices. These observations suggest that the Stackelberg game may not be a sufficient device to predict contracting behaviors in reality where bargaining is commonly observed.

With competition becoming more and more fierce in the market place, organizations are transforming themselves to be more and more leaner and eventually taking the shapes of Virtual Organizations. Today the Corporates are fighting the battle in the market place more and more on the supremacy of their Supply Chains forcing more and more innovations in their supply chain functions. The expectations from the Next Generation Supply Chains, therefore, shall be very high as the excellence of an enterprise in the next generation shall largely depend on how innovatively the supply chains have been designed.
